DITW 11-22: Acheron

There wouldn’t be much time to play with Josh this morning. She’d woke up late, showered at Hyun’s, and Josh would have to get ready for work. Although, if she played this well, maybe she could even convince him to call in sick to work. What she’d like to do is lure from him his darkest fantasies—remind him that he builds the walls that cage him. And then coax him toward what she wanted to hear: the worst his imagination could conjure. Devlin wasn’t inside Hyun’s apartment, so why were you there? Without Devlin, what was Josh’s greatest fear? That fear would become his new desire. And she could craft and shape it to her whim.

They were perfect. They were meant for each other. How could two people work so well together to manifest the world around them, all while attaining the most frightening treasures they would ever dream of possessing?

When she was done with Josh this morning, she could cook breakfast and they could lie around, maybe go for a walk later. Maybe even go house hunting—though they weren’t quite there yet, the time would be soon. She wouldn’t be able to skip work today, too much to do, but she could go in after lunch if she wanted.

The apartment was still when she entered. Had she riled him up so much last night, handling his hard dick through the car window, that even though she was late, he still lay in bed waiting for her? Probably naked and erect and nerves cinched tight as a shipyard knot. She would reduce him to a jiggling puddle of orgasmic jelly. She toed off her sneakers in the hall, enjoying for a moment the idea of Josh’s existential orgasm. The sound of his sexual whimpers had begun to arouse her recently. She chuckled, and palmed her forehead, her stomach tight with anticipation, the gray morning light beginning to fill the apartment enough she could make out the Lungshan Temple in her father’s framed photograph hanging over the stand.

“Wow,” she whispered to the silent apartment, feeling the aching stretch of her nipples. The buds pressed out her cotton top enough to cast long shadows. She squeezed her own breasts, and when she did, could feel pressure and heat between her legs, her body already beginning its preparation.

The kitchen was quiet, and she padded past it in sock feet, for the first time disconcerted by the apartment’s pure stillness, heading down the narrow hall, wondering in what manner she would find Josh. It was almost five-thirty. Either he was in the shower, or he was in bed, tormented and touching himself. She would deliver him the greatest thrill.

At the door, she paused and listened, but heard nothing. Thought of perhaps stripping down and entering the bedroom naked. But that would be for her own enjoyment. The anticipation was driving her wild. But how would she lure from him his dark thoughts if she entered too far into the game? She needed room to maneuver, to bargain, and removing garments would be antes. She turned the door knob and eased the door open. Josh wasn’t in bed. He wasn’t in the room. In the bathroom, having a shower.

But he wasn’t there, either.

She turned and regarded the bed. It was loosely made, looking much the same as when she’d left for work yesterday morning. Was it possible he hadn’t slept in it? She pulled down the covers and put a palm on the bedsheet. No collected warmth from an overnight sleeper; it was cold.

Josh wasn’t home, and he hadn’t slept here?

The first thought that came to her was terrifying: he’d been injured. He’d been in a car crash. Someone had beaten him up at a bank machine; he was in trouble, he was hurt, he was alone.

Her mind raced and her heart galloped. She lay a hand on her chest, eyes wide and staring at the floor as she wrestled with anxious, fearful thoughts, and sought a plan of action. He’d left Hyun’s last night at about what, nine-thirty? Where would he go? Steve’s? Meyer’s? Someone else’s? Did he fall asleep playing video games? That had to be it.

She quick-stepped back to the hallway, seeking her phone left on the hall stand. Swiped it open and checked again for messages. Nothing from Josh. No word at all.

She typed a quick and simple message.

Kimmy: Where are you?

Then right away flicked open her Find My Phone, saw for a second Josh was in Ajax. Her heart soared, then crashed. It was from yesterday, and now her phone changed its mind on showing her where Josh was, giving her the message, The user hasn’t shared their location with you.

“What the fuck?”

Josh had removed permission for her to see where he was.

“Wow,” she sighed, eyelashes fluttering, her temples beginning to throb.

What did that mean? That was direct action.

She backed toward the bed and sat down on it, swirling disappointment clouding the sexual tension that had tautened her insides.

“So you’re not missing,” she said aloud. He wasn’t in the hospital, a John Doe with no ID on him. Josh had chosen to exclude her digitally.

Now the disappointment combined with concern and darkened her interior skies. She rested her phone on a thigh and put her hands on her cheeks.

This was not what she had expected to find when she came home.

Then the thunderheads of guilty foreboding galloped over her shoreline and drenched the landscape.

Josh knew what she’d done last night with Hyun.

But how? How the hell would he know?

She grabbed a handful of sweater fabric over her heart and closed her eyes, bracing against a blood pressure vertigo that seized her.

Horror, shame, guilt, and bottomless mortification seized her.

Josh screaming in her head: With Sophie’s fucking mom?

“It’s not like that, Josh,” she said, then whimpered. She hid her face in her hands. “And how do you know?”

Eyes darting all over the carpet, her mind riffled through potential weaknesses in her spy craft. How did Josh see them in bed together? She’d looked up at the window standing next to the car, making fun of him for being a voyeur. He’d taken her up on it like a challenge. Or what? A nanny cam. Meyer? Did Meyer have access to a nanny cam? But no, not in Hyun’s bedroom. He’d end up in jail for that.

“Hyun?”

Once she said it, she shook her head. No way. Hyun had no reason, and Hyun would never betray her.

But what did it matter how? What mattered was the devastation. How would she manage it?

She couldn’t.

Hands trembling to practical impotence, she struggled to lift the phone from her leg, then slid off the bed to sit on the floor, eased to her side and lay on the rug. It took great effort to move the phone where she could see it, her arms—her whole body—aching and seized like she’d been infected with rabies.

Rabies made her think.

If she could manufacture a tragedy, she could save herself. Bitten by a dog, an infection. No, worse.

As the tears rimmed her eyes, she let the phone fall from her grasp and lay a hand over her stomach. This was Josh’s baby. Josh’s baby grew inside her.

Could that save her?

What kind of man would abandon his wife and child?

Was her crime worthy of excommunication?

She nodded and cried, sniffling and sniveling.

This was how it ended. This was her demise.

She saw it coming a mile away but thought she had control, thought she had a good grip on the wheel.

All those wild and foreign things she did with lovely Hyun soured on her mind’s palate. She was a degenerate. Degeneracy had been the thrill; she was tall and sexy and smart and successful, yet inside she was dark and rotten. But she was commanding. The confidence and her beauty were the armor she wore every day that licensed it all. Her privilege.

The nameless weight that had crushed her when Josh had gone to Rome returned now, heavier still by her insoluble depravity. That’s what it was. Deep down, all she considered to be her command was only a lacquered veneer over the stone effigy erected in honor of her anomie; the gray state where the miscarriage’s tragedy had exiled her.

Resentment.

Blame.

These were her iniquities. Her true deepest, darkest vice.

Not domination, not humiliation. Those were her sin’s pressure valves.

“That’s not true,” she said, her jaw muscles constricted.

But it was true, wasn’t it?

She shook her head no, not wanting to dwell too long in a room with such a bad smell. She tilted the phone toward her face. No return text from Josh. No response.

If it was Josh’s fault, then it wasn’t hers. Was that it?

And, so, if it wasn’t her fault, then Josh deserved punishment.

None of it was true. Nothing about any of this was true. It was no one’s fault. But making Josh suffer made it truer. The more Josh suffered, the truer it became.

That wasn’t it. It couldn’t be it. No, she couldn’t think that.

She hand-heeled wet from her eyes, sniffling, blinking, her vision going tear-warbled.

Only one thing mattered more than anything else. All her transgressions shrank in proportion.

She wanted to know the only thing that mattered. She typed her message.

Kimmy: Are you okay?

Then she watched and waited, and the longer nothing happened, the more her features shrank, the more worry and hurt creased her brow and sank her heart. No response. She sobbed and drew in a long hoarse and shaky breath.

She typed again.

Kimmy: Please tell me you’re okay

pitchfork wielding fishnet tights clad demonette lately escaped from one of the Mystery Plays... you used your craft to convince this reader and the read(er) in the first bit, that she is not just a twisted bitch, a sadistic whore, nor does she deserve to be compared unfavourably to a bipolar bonobo! Past actions not withstanding! It were ace writing... the bees knees... the whole nine yards... A tribute to the efforts expended! Reductivism be damned! Subtlety rules!

Bill F Protagoras

By the by KT, though you have commented more than once on the difficulty of writing the Hyun, Kim chapter, let me say it was a piece of work that mocked the girl on girl trope for its cliché status in most media nowadays... just like a lot of the hardcore stuff in Cherry Blossoms, it (I believe) leads the read in unexpected directions, not to "knee" jerk sniggering but to complicated nuanced relations, and aspects of Kimmy that cannot be fobbed off as to her being a mere

Bill F Protagoras

Love the ambiguity of "playing with Josh" and the way it reveals the prejudices we might be feeling when we read it... of course the great thing is it doesn't have to be one or the other...

Bill F Protagoras

Again bollox! I am the only idiot that can tread in the same cowpat twice... or ad infinitum! As I was saying... that to a certain extent you build your characters in same way we recognise another person... it has a beautiful symmetry... and I'm sure a fearful one... It's kinda touching... Cheers, KT.

I love that you have opinions on your characters and not inside knowledge that trumps the readers' opinions... It confirms that you

Kat, I think those are fair questions. How is Josh guilty of infidelity, cruelty, or emotional abuse? Let me explain my perspective, and see what you (and others) think. I acknowledge, some of this is subjective, and may depend on how we define things. And you may disagree, on all counts. 1. Cruel. If we accept that cruel can be defined as “Willfully causing pain or suffering to others” then I think two actions of Josh’s may be seen as cruel. a) Leaving Kimmy and not answering her texts. If he’s done this to hurt her, then that’s clearly ‘willfully causing’ both ‘pain and suffering’ to Kimmy. The fear of abandonment is arguably one of the most common and damaging fears. It’s described as the “overwhelming fear that people you love will leave you physically and/or emotionally. We’re still not certain where Josh is, or why things “appear” to be as they are, so Josh may be innocent. But if he intentionally did this to punish, this is why I think it fits the bill as “cruel.” b) Josh’s pattern of asking Kimmy to play their “game,” and then getting angry at her when she ‘takes it too far.” To my recollection, sometimes he yells at her, shames her, and even slut shames her. C’mon Josh: You ask your wife to step outside her comfort zone and indulge one of YOUR kinks, and then because she can’t read your mind, you punish her when she accidentally takes it too far? And you punish her by slut shaming her? And you do this repeatedly? To me that seems emotionally abusive and cruel. Those scenes really frustrated me, in part because I think it can take a lot of courage for a woman/man to step outside their sexual comfort. They are making themselves vulnerable. So, Josh’s behavior, the way he entirely dishonors/disregards that risk and vulnerability...I find it infuriating. But he goes further. He punishes her. It’s despicable. To me, at least. (Clarification: I recall him shaming her multiple times, and slut shaming her at least once. The latter, slut shaming, may not have happened multiple times. I can’t recall.) 2. Emotionally Abusive – Both 1a and 1b, above. • I think b) is emotionally abusive. And I think, given b), even though a) happens just once, it’s more emotional abuse. Further, if it’s revealed that Josh KNOWS that Kimmy has abandonment issues, then abandoning her becomes even more abusive, and much more cruel. 3. Infidelity • If you believe that infidelity requires intercourse or overt sexual acts, then read no further. Josh is innocent. But some people think of secretly texting another as infidelity. And Josh does much more. • I’m thinking of infidelity as “the act or fact of having a romantic or sexual relationship with someone other than one's husband, wife, or partner” • Josh is clearly not sleeping with anyone other than Kimmy, nor does he have a romantic relationship with anyone • He has (possibly) touched Devlin’s hard cock (Book 1) • He has masturbated to thoughts of just Devlin and his big cock (Book 1) • He has traded sexual texts with Devlin, including nudes • He has had numerous secret texts with Devlin, that he hasn’t shared with Kimmy • He’s visited Devlin in secret • He’s sexually submitted to Devlin, wearing Kimmy’s panties for Devlin (Book 10), at Devlin’s command. This seems to have sexually aroused him. • After wearing the panties, he himself (sexually?) escalated their meeting, by showing that he was wearing the panties. Devlin didn’t ask for this. Josh initiated this reveal. • When Devlin then followed up and told Josh to pull his pants and panties down, Josh once again (sexually?) submitted to Devlin. He pulled down his pants, showing himself fully erect. And then he pulled down the panties, showing his full erection to Devlin. Now let’s pretend Josh was a woman. If a man’s wife is simply trading secret texts with someone, we might call that infidelity. If they were sex-related or included nudes, we definitely would. What if, in addition: She had met with him in secret? She may have actually, or just dreamt, that she touched his hard cock. She has masturbated to thoughts of him or his cock. She wore panties for him, and went to visit him and show him. Even when he didn’t ask to see them, she showed them to him anyway. When he told her to strip for him, she did. She submitted to him; a man not her husband. And she was visibly aroused as she did so. Wouldn’t we say that such a woman is guilty of infidelity? So, can’t a case be made that Josh is, as well? Doesn’t Josh have a sexual “relationship” (of sorts) with Devlin? He’s masturbated to thoughts of Devlin’s cock. He may have touched Devlin’s cock. Hasn’t he “sexually” submitted to Devlin? I mean, no traditional sex acts occurred, but those experiences certainly seem to have been sexual for Josh. And he’s kept them secret from Kimmy.

Pete

Hi @Pete, I appreciate your comments, and love discussing these characters. By no means do I think Josh is blameless in this story. He has definitely told his share of lies, and kept a lot of secrets from Kimmy. Her behaviour throughout the story has been rotten and evil, but that doesn’t necessarily make her rotten and evil, even though I’ve said that’s she’s both things many times. Lol If we go by her internal monologue, there is still some humanity there, a lot of guilt and some sort of warped love for Josh. In my opinion, a lot of her recklessness and bad behaviour stems from where she is in her life. When the book opens, she’s at home, depressed, still recovering from her miscarriage. Devlin offers excitement for her, as well as a glamorous lifestyle and powerful job. He makes all of her dreams come true, even the ones she didn’t realize she wanted. Just as Josh’s compulsions have caused him to behave in certain ways, Kimmy’s compulsions and selfishness have made her do things, that IMO are way worse than Josh disappearing and disabling the tracking on his phone. I know I’m comparing them, but I can’t help it. She’s been playing with his psyche and emotions. She pushed it too far the other night telling him that they were in trouble, and then going to stay the night with Hyun. She knew what it would all do to Josh, and it excited her. She enjoys tormenting him. She gets off on it, and believes that he gets off on it, too. So, yes, in your observations, Josh is definitely a liar, no question. But, I don’t see where he’s been particularly cruel or abusive to Kimmy. I also don’t see where he’s been unfaithful, either, if infidelity requires cheating with another person. On the other hand, Kimmy has done all four examples that you stated. I think what Josh has done only shows his deceit, therefore he is dishonest and especially cowardly. Turning off the tracking in his phone could be seen as cowardly, because he doesn’t want to face Kimmy after having been found spying on her in the parking lot. But, I don’t see where he has abused Kimmy, was cruel, or unfaithful.

Kat

Mike and Kat, I think we’re looking at slightly different things. In my first post here, you may notice that I never compare Kimmy and Josh. Yet I think you guys do, and I think that makes for a slightly different conversation. Switching over to your conversation, you guys have offered (I’m paraphrasing) “Josh isn’t cruel, because look at how bad Kimmy is. She’s worse.” I agree that if we’re tallying misdeeds or bad acts, Kimmy is far in the lead. But that doesn’t give Josh a moral blank check. And it doesn't put a purifying shine on dark actions done to her, unless we're willing to de-humanize Kimmy. Until then, or for those of us not willing to go that far: Josh's character is stained or polished by his own actions. • If he lies to Kimmy, he’s a man who tells lies. • If he abuses her, he’s a man who abuses women. • If he does cruel things to Kimmy, then he’s a man who does cruel things to others. • If he engages in infidelity, betraying even “terrible” Kimmy, then he’s an unfaithful man. Conversely • If he were truthful, he’d be an honest man. • If he were courageous, he’d be a brave man. • If he acted kindly, he’d be a kind man. • If he practiced fidelity, he’d be a true man. To me, none of this means that Josh is necessarily a “horrible” person. He's flawed, like so many of us. I actually, in fact, love him as a plot “chess piece”. He’s brilliant as such... because of his flaws.

Pete

Damn!... deal with the devlin to kick this all off... nonetheless maybe KT is just gonna rub our faces in one of those pellucid arbitrary painful homeric moments the rhapsodes used to handout... or we'll be left with Josh babbling about Christ's blood streaming in the firmament... I'm just hoping it won't end with a cathartic kick in the nuts... So "Wot the Hell! Wot the Hell! Toujours gai! We can always meet up later here in the rubble to commiserate. Un saludo, Bill!

Bill F Protagoras

Thanks! But really I was more concerned about the erroneous character who I know next to nothing about... I don't want to second guess the lady with the sheers... I saw your ingenious paralleling of the inferno... but I think we're more in "Wade in the Water" country now... What really was a stroke of genius was Josh's fevre dream

Bill F Protagoras

One also confesses one's sins to the demi-god Acheron and then one dies. So the chapter could be about Kimmy finding herself in a terrible part of Hell and needing to confess, knowing that if she does she will (figuratively) die. Josh will leave her, Hyun will never speak with her again; she will be left with Devlin (and Amy).

Donkatsu

blame... bugger! Now Devlin... I'd love to know, if someone pricked him would he not bleed... all over his plush expensive rugs.

Bill F Protagoras

I'm not sure I recognise this Manichean heresy of a woman... I know we are all reading different books but the words are the same I believe... I'm not interested in choosing between my very good friends Kimmy and Josh... their anguish won't be diminished one jot by assigning.

Bill F Protagoras

This chapter is titled Asheron in the Kindle version I downloaded... some old geezer from a game my PC informs... Acheron on the other hand was a river bordering Hades... filled to the brim with misery, which seems to suit the shocking state Kimmy suddenly finds herself in... or am I missing some abstruse aspect of this man

Bill F Protagoras

CSH, you make a lot of great points. I especially like your discussion and contrast about self-acceptance. Also, your pushback is fair on my calling Josh "spineless, manipulative, selfish, and emotionally abusive." KT clarified "selfish" in the comments here, reminding me that Josh calls himself selfish; and that self-perception of his may have strongly colored my impression of him. Further, on reflection I do think my accusing him of being "manipulative" is unfair. So far, he hasn't truly become consciously manipulative in order to get what he wants.

Pete

Yes, this is all true. But Josh isn't sure that's what's happened. Is it suitable revenge if he's not even certain? (BTW I love these speculations so(!) much and I wish I could jump in more, but I'm the freaking author(!) so it's not fair...

KT Morrison

Wow: To intentionally leave someone who loves you in a state in which they’re fearing if you’re alive or dead is one of the cruelest things one human being can do to another. Premeditated and calculating, its sole intent is to hurt the other. It’s a despicable act. (I witnessed this in real life at a young age.)

KT Morrison

@Pete: this is a fascinating deep-dive.

KT Morrison

I don't think Josh is selfish, and that's why he hates his situation—he sees the indulgence as selfish. He is bound by his own nomos, and to submit to his particular dark desire would mean he was a bad person. And therefore selfish. He thinks he compels Kimmy toward his sin.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomos_(sociology))

KT Morrison

I hated that Hyun business too. Hardest thing I've ever had to write. Maybe I couldn't write horror after all.

KT Morrison

The self-realization and transformation that Kimmy has now undergone mirrors in part the realization and transformation that Josh also underwent when he found the panties and then ran off to Rome. Josh didn’t just run away because Kimmy betrayed him, he ran because she betrayed him and he fucking got off on it so much he couldn’t stop beating off to the idea that she had really betrayed him. The fundamental difference is their willingness to embrace what this means for each of them - their roles, if you will. Kimmy has embraced hers now, her acceptance of the thrill of humiliating Josh. That is, of course, easier. But even though Josh is helplessly addicted to the idea of having Kimmy and Devlin cuckold him he cannot accept the consequences of it being real. He’s too much of a coward to accept that he wants it, hence his literally running away every time Kimmy or Devlin make it real for him. Though I don’t agree that he is “spineless, manipulative, selfish, and emotionally abusive”, I think he is desperately trying to “top from the bottom“ and in this situation that just isn’t going to happen. I expect (or maybe it’s hope?) that Josh will break and accept his fate. I see that as the natural progression of the books so far.

CSH

Absolutely 💯 agree...how anyone can blame Josh for this based on all the evidence we have been provided at present...No Way!!! Kimmy is vile and disgusting and she should get some payback of sorts! Again if you truly love and respect someone you don't do what Kimmy has done in all 11 books.

Mike Monroe

Maggie and Cole 🤮 just kidding. Lol Mostly just Cole. Haha

Kat

@Mike Monroe Yeah, I also don’t see how Josh is cruel either. Kimmy cheated on him with his tormentor, and she knows Josh knows. Even if it turned him on, it’s still unbelievably cruel all the stuff she’s done in this book. How about what she did outside of the Dragon, during the party she had for Josh. Then she went back and sat in his lap! What about the shit she did when they were in the Cayman? And after the Royal York, when she had to get up out of bed to call Devlin and tell him how Josh went down on her, unshowered, after she’d cheated with him. She also made fun of Josh during that phone call referring to his “little dick”, etc. That is an insanely cruel way to treat the person you love, your best friend, your spouse. Josh’s only fault in this book is that he loves his wife, and can’t help his compulsion to submit to her, which she has largely used to her own advantage. Yes, he gets off on it, but she only does it because it offers her a way to lie and cheat and then justify her actions to herself.

Kat

How is he cruel..because doesn't except her BS treatment of him??? I say about time!!! If he left and went off to Rome and never spoke to her again ...GOOD for him. If his action at the end of this book is the worst thing a person could do but not all her actions in all 11 bk .. how can that be??? Finally he should get that she is not the one for him. Kimmy is the ultimate VILLiAN in this story .. Kimmy means Josh no good at all...They are not in this together.. they is no twist in this. The fact that he should be in the Apartment to be humiliated again??? If this is way she loves him...then I really would hate to see what she do if she hates him .. the absolute fact that she would do this with a person she knows he hates is the Ultimate betrayal...Nothing she has done is correct in all 11 books she is the Devil in the water .period!!!

Mike Monroe

Your right L_S87! at this point I think it may be too late for their marriage. I think maybe earlier in her affair with Devlin before Caymans she could come clean to Josh and he might have forgiven her. But now after her pregnancy ( she still hasn't told Josh) and her seduction of Hyun. It's over! Josh would need to have a big heart for that type of forgiveness and most people don't have that big of heart! I also agree about Josh finding his inner backbone. I think he had one as he was getting ready to walk out on Kimmy in Rome! Compare him to Pete from "Learning Lessons" who was constantly walked over till the end! Josh is not doing bad for himself in that department. How many chapters do you think are left in this book? I cant wait for the next chapter!

Andrew Mellein

That's where I tend to differ from many here in how I view Josh. I've always felt he had some backbone, he just struggles with balancing his kink with his need for truth and trust. A man with no backbone wouldn't have gotten angry with Kimmy at the tailor, nor at the panties in the sofa, nor at her portrayal of what occurred when Devlin jerked off at the hotel. He has a backbone, but he also has many weaknesses, and his worst one is Kimmy. She knows all his buttons and she pushes them aggressively when he gets angry to distract him. Him showing up at Hyun's and possibly this latest development are simply more demonstrations of said backbone. Something Kimmy acknowledges in her guilt because she admits to losing control of him and the situation. She also knows it's mostly her fault for abusing his love and trust as she has. She's admitted that many times, but it never stops her from making more poor decisions. The question is, how many more times can she go to that well of sexual distraction before it no longer works, or has that already happened? I think Josh isn't quite there yet. Unfortunately, between Kimmy and Devlin, by the time he gets there, I don't know if there will be much left worth saving. He's already at his wits end and he doesn't even know the half of Kimmy's dastardly deeds, much less the pregnancy. Yes, Josh has a backbone, but he'd need to be the Man of Steel to withstand this sort of onslaught.

L_S87

I know it’s probably futile, but I hope this means that Josh has grown a backbone with Kimmy. I would really like him to dictate to her the terms of their relationship. We all know he likes what they’re doing. I know this isn’t where the story is going, but I can hope. Lol In reality, I think Kimmy’s going to be in charge of it all, regardless of where she is in this chapter.

Kat

Well, that's the interesting bit that puts so much emphasis on where Josh is and what he may be doing. I can see CSH's scenario playing out if Josh is at Devlin's. Kimmy would be pissed, and it's possible, maybe even probable, that she'd pull a "Fine! Since you're so enamored with this idea, I'll show you exactly what this is like so sit your ass down and watch" in a fit of petulance to punish him for making her worry. Not to mention refusing to let her "protect" him. I could also see a scenario where Devlin seduces a distraught Kimmy who is worried about or angry at Josh for what he just did and setting up that voyeur scenario you suggest, Andrew. I think that one is much more rife with consequence as it would be just like Devlin to "accidentally" bring up all sorts of past actions with Kimmy being unaware of her audience and responding like she has in the past in ways that would devastate Josh. (Imagine Devlin bringing up them having sex at Cayman and how they laughed at Josh behind his back for being unaware and Kimmy laughing as well, saying that was one of their better moments, all with Josh looking on) We'll see. Regardless of how that plays out, the fact that Josh would know she's coming home at 4:30 and purposefully not be there shows how precarious a position their marriage is in, future Devlin sex or not.

L_S87

I kind of don't want to see Devlin screwing Kimmy with Josh watching! Do I think it's going to happen! Possibly! KT does writes hot sex scenes that after reading them you don't want to read them again. I just hope if that situation ever arises that it spells the end of Kimmy and Josh's marriage. I would love to see Josh as a voyeur at first then realizing it's Devlin just walks out of Kimmy's life for good! I cant wait for the next chapters!

Andrew Mellein

One of my favorite exchanges in modern storytelling is the conversation in which Shrek futilely tries to explain to Donkey how ogres are like onions. And I think, like an ogre, both Kimmy and Josh have layers. Layers that are slowly being revealed to us throughout these first 11 books of DITW. Through that lens, new layers for both of our protagonists are revealed in this chapter. For Kimmy’s part, this chapter opens by showing us that now just the mere thought of humiliating Josh arouses her. As KT writes, “The sound of his sexual whimpers had begun to arouse her recently.” So, much so, that even without touch, her body demonstrates a physical response to her arousal as she enters the apartment. As Kimmy contemplates how she’ll humiliate Josh, Kimmy is “feeling the aching stretch of her nipples. The buds pressed out her cotton top enough to cast long shadows.” This is a progression. Perhaps a more conscious embracing, acceptance, and celebration of her dark side. Now she’s not only becoming more comfortable with hurting or humiliating Josh, but it’s a clear turn on. She’s so aroused by the mere thought of it, in fact, that her body responds; her nipples harden, her loins awaken. This changes how we see Kimmy in interesting ways, especially as a villain. But also as a cuckoldress and humiliatrix. Was this arousal a one-time occurrence? If repeated, do the arousal and inclinations grow? How does this impact her thoughts? Does she crave more, justify more, and feel less shame? Does embracing her lust and sadistic desires lead to her slowly embracing other primitive urges: Lust for money, power, authority, station, influence, or additional sexual partners? The best villains are powerful. So does her self-acceptance, embracing the darkness within her… Does that empower Kimmy? Make her more formidable? Enhance her ability to be an agent in the world, rather than a consequence? For Josh’s part, we learn more of him as well. He’s already shown how emotionally abusive he can be. But what he does to Kimmy in this chapter takes that to a much darker place. We see a new layer to him. A new capacity. To intentionally leave someone who loves you in a state in which they’re fearing if you’re alive or dead is one of the cruelest things one human being can do to another. Premeditated and calculating, its sole intent is to hurt the other. It’s a despicable act. This chapter changes how we see Josh. We knew he was spineless, manipulative, selfish, and emotionally abusive. But, it’s worse than that. He’s cruel. Will he see that? Will others see that in him? And if Kimmy finally sees this or other flaws in Josh, and her opinion of him changes, how will that impact her choices and actions?

Pete

Your assessment makes sense, I just didn't initially see it that way so it surprised me how many people did. Though it makes sense given so many people are angling hard for Josh to end up watching Kimmy with Devlin and this is a prime way for it to happen. For me it was "obvious" that Josh would either figure Devlin is telling the truth and get pissed, or if Devlin then says he's "joking" afterwards, get pissed because it's Devlin being his typical bully self. Either way, he'd want nothing to do with him. That said, Josh is rarely logical in the decisions he makes, and given past choices, as you pointed out, the likely answer of him not responding is that he's probably at Devlin's. With Devlin also providing more info on Kimmy's indiscretions. Both scenarios lead to Josh refusing to talk to Kimmy. There are others as well. We'll see which one winds up being right! (Given the nature of the series, your hypothesis is probably the accurate one, but KT is so unpredictable with this stuff, who knows?)

L_S87

Well the obvious reason to think Josh went to Devlin’s is because he was supposedly texting with Devlin and he has already gone and spent time with Devlin before. It would be easy for Devlin to have said he was just kidding about the Kimmy comment then invite Josh to come by.for an “honest” discussion.

CSH

I just hope with bk 12..there is no Maggie and Cole ending .. no everyone friends ending . No sharing Kimmy... Scorched earth..period... no weak and pathetic Josh accepting of everything..GOT...Red Wedding ..Dani on Drogon style ending!!!

Mike Monroe

Probably correct, but then we don’t have a story.

Donkatsu

Most Likely very true!!! I believe that plays a major part in it! She is very destructive due to that disappointment and pressure of competition between her sister and family expectations in not having a successful labor! Twisted very twisted.

Mike Monroe

Does anyone think that if Kimmy and Josh had their baby none of this stuff would’ve happened? I tend to think so because Kimmy would be more indebted to Josh and her child to even start an affair with Devlin. Also because of losing her child I feel something snapped in her and she got depressed with her monotonous day-in and day-out life. What do you loyal commentators think?

Andrew Mellein

I never really followed it to that conclusion, though it feels like a natural one. It does explain why she would say that being with Devlin wouldn't have been something she was likely to do without Josh. At the time I took it to be her darkness for doing awful things enjoyed the thought of how horrible it would be for Josh to know the things she's doing. But this adds to that. Yes, she does enjoy doing taboo and awful things, but part of her also sees this as a punishment for Josh? I just saw this as her rationalizing her behavior because deep down she blames herself (an unfortunate but common problem for miscarriages) and it's easier to make it Josh's fault in the moment to avoid those feelings. Combine that with her new found love of doing despicable things and getting off on it and it's a recipe for disaster. That said, it makes a lot of sense that from the beginning, deep inside, this while thing was a way to punish Josh for his "failures". Hell, it even points to why she's so frantic about this possibly not being Josh's baby. It *has* to be his, otherwise her horrible blame and resentment has lead to her getting pregnant with Devlin, someone she doesn't even like. That would be the most despicable thing of all, and she knows it. After reading this last book, I had become increasingly sure she wouldn't get with Devlin in a context where she knows Josh is watching, and given Josh's hatred, I had written it off as a possibility that Josh would allow it to happen where Kimmy is unknowingly tricked into it. Now, though... I can see Kimmy getting almost violently angry once this fear of what has happened to her beloved Josh wears off. This will largely be driven by the circumstances of what Josh has done, why he's ignoring her, and how Kimmy finds out. I could easily see her setting up a scenario where she's with Devlin again after having sworn off such things as a punishment for Josh for causing her such anguish. That won't end the way that she thinks it will, in my opinion, but I can easily see her doing it. Then having abject regret afterwards when Devlin bends the situation to his liking by destroying Josh's psyche through revealing some of the awful things Kimmy has done.

L_S87

I may be the only one of this opinion..But I don't feel sorry for Kimmy...She is the Devil in the water ..not Devlin!! Devlin is who he is and always has been. As with the Devil...the Devil was the most beautiful Angel God created and he fell...I believe God gives you gifts and you choose to use them for good or bad he doesn't take them away either way! The Devil despite what the world depicts of him is still beautiful. That is why beautiful will always have advantages. That is why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Kimmy has actively done what she wanted because she can. She hasn't been mislead as we see here in this chapter she willfully has done what she has done and has corrupted Josh and now Hyun to her purposes. Devlin is just a useful tool. Is he evil ....yes but again he is who he is! Kimmy started this snowball going downhill. So what happens next most likely tragic at some level. Deceit.. humiliation and Whoa straight ahead. So I don't feel sorry for Kimmy...much like Adam ...Josh' s Eve has led him to this fall!

Mike Monroe

Yeah, I think this chapter revealed a lot about her motivations and thinking.

CSH

I’m starting to feel sorry for Kimmy now that it’s revealed that her actions stem from blaming Josh for her miscarriage even though she knows this not to be true really. Maybe that was part of the attraction to Devlin, the more virile and potent lover that could give her a viable baby. She loves Josh but also needed to punish him. I don’t know where Josh is, but it’s likely to bode poorly for them and feed to Devlin’s desires. There is no way this finishes without Josh watching Devlin fuck Kimmy.

Tracey52

Yes, at this point I don’t think Kimmy is operating with a full deck! I think she’s totally going to lose it if she loses Josh and can’t control and humiliate him! I kinda feel bad for her even though she did lots of shitty things! I do think she deserves whatever comes her way!

Andrew Mellein

@Andrew, I too see the split personality in Kimmy’s POV. She’s really lost control of the situation and of her life, and it seems like it’s just hitting her now, when in reality she lost control when she started her lies.

Kat

Correct! Kimmy and her marriage to Josh is the exact opposite of Sukies more stable marriage where she communicates with her husband in everything they do!

Andrew Mellein

Yes, Kimmy is a far cry from Sukie. Not that Sukie didn't make mistakes or sometimes try to cover her behavior by putting it back in Tommy, but she never was this awful. And as noted, in the end she knew what the right choice was. Plus, most everything they did, with a few notable exceptions, was always treated as a partnership. That's how Kimmy should have treated this, but she didn't, and here we are. Pending catastrophe in the wings.

L_S87

Indeed “Happy Endings” this book isn’t 🤣🤣 But that’s due to Kimmy’s lies all the way at the start of Book 1! This book is darker and sadder due to the death of a marriage and the lack of honesty! Reading Kimmys POV it seems like she’s not all there and got a split personality! I actually feel bad for her and think she needs psychological mental help or counseling. There is a good Kimmy/ bad Kimmy in her thinking. But maybe I’m overthinking the story🤣🤣

Andrew Mellein

I think that’s what’s going to happen! I think “curiosity got the cat” in this case it’s Josh. I think Josh was tempted by Devlin to visit his apartment. For what reason, who knows? Maybe he wants to be humiliated by more of Devlins stories about Kimmy! But I think Devlin is going to get his hooks into Josh just like he did with Kimmy! Maybe by having one female friends or workers seduce Josh! Remember the title is called “Devil in the Waters”! I don’t know why Josh would trust Devlin (his bully) but he’s in a weird place right now. And Devlins end goal is to make Josh a voyeur while he he has his way with Kimmy!

Andrew Mellein

Scheming is in her blood, its impossible for her not to try to twist a situation to her own advantage, regardless of how despicable the tools she uses to do so may be. I hope no one read that first paragraph and felt like I was denigrating them for their own responses to this chapter. When I got to the part where Kimmy realized the house was empty, i practically cheered. I wanted to jump up and dance. Yet, by the end of it, that had mostly wilted away. Does she deserve this? Hell yes. But I can't help but feel empty knowing that if she feels this way, Josh is, or soon will be, feeling just as bad or worse. Any scenario where Kimmy is this distraught and Josh isn't supporting her means he's in just as dark a place. The HEA loving sap in me would have much preferred, no matter awful she's been to this point, for Kimmy to have an epiphany on the way home and NOT have those plans she did at the beginning of the chapter, but to instead vow to do right by Josh, listen to her guilty conscience more often and truly embark on fixing things. But this isn't destined for that because Kimmy has never been that person, and poor Josh gets to reap the "rewards" of choosing poorly in who he tied his soul to.

L_S87

I can see several scenarios where he's at Devlin's place. He could simply call Declin a liar and Devlin says come here and find out. Josh would know Kimmy isn't, but may be intrigued enough to show up and see what Devlin is up to. It would certainly explain the locator being off. The only issue with this scenario is it wouldn't explain him ignoring Kimmy's texts. Unless Devlin showed him something truly awful that caused Josh to completely shrivel up inside. Then again, him being pissed at Kimmy would just as easily explain it. If he was mad enough to not go home, he'd also be mad enough to not want her to find him like she did in Rome. Hell, even Kimmy could be right. He may have turned the locator off after she caught him outside and then got into a car accident. Unlikely given the trajectory of the story so far, but still possible. It's hard to say. Josh's mind is a very messy place. It's hard to figure out from one moment to the next what he's going to do.

L_S87

Omg, you are right. You always catch the stuff that I miss. Josh thinks Devlin is in Hyun’s apartment, so why would he be at Devlin’s apartment? Duh 🙄 And now he’s turned off his locator and has vanished, but vanished to where? Did he just go stay at a hotel? Is he planning to go back to Rome and not telling Kimmy anything? He hates Devlin. He seemed pretty pissed off in the earlier chapter when he was back in his car after Kimmy caught him and turned it all around on him. If he believes that she was with Devlin in Hyun’s apartment, why wouldn’t he just leave her? It could be enough to finally enrage him after she promised to be honest with him and protect him from Devlin. Maybe he’ll tell Meyer, and he’ll ask Hyun about it? I think Kimmy’s about to go through hell.

Kat

Yep, her first inclination isn’t to tell her husband the joyous news, but to find a way to use it as weapon to get Josh to do what she wants.

Kat

True, though in Kimmy's defense, she had setup a scenario where she thought Josh would be at home, obediently waiting for her to "take care of him". So her natural inclination would be sexual thoughts revolving around that. It does say something pretty awful that one of her first ideas is to use her pregnancy as a weapon to make Josh come back.

L_S87

I'm somewhat surprised at all the people saying he went to Devlin's. It would make sense that he'd turn off the locator for that, I just never put it together because if Devlin is with Kimmy and Kimmy is at Hyun's apartment... why would he think to go to Devlin's place? I had just assumed Josh got pissed and decided he was going to have some alone time, or he got an emergency call from work to go to Rome early and neglected to tell Kimmy, because again, he's hacked off with her. That said, I could see the thought process of if Josh called Declin a liar, Devlin might say come over and see. Josh turns the tracking off and does so... then spends the night there (or somewhere else) after being shown more incriminating evidence. I just struggle with that line of thought because Josh doesn't like Devlin. Hates him. He only asked the question because Kimmy was being so evasive.

L_S87

I am predicting Devlin's going to show Josh a good time in the gaudy Devlin fashion as a way to get his hooks into Kimmy and Josh even further! Maybe hook Josh up with a fling with one of his secretaries or lady friends. That would make it easier for Kimmy to guilt trip Josh for cheating and for Devlin and Kimmy to hook up and do the hanky panky with Josh watching. This was always Devlin's master plan! We will see if that pans out! But so far I think Josh is sick of Kimmy's act and wouldn't care who she (as shown in this chapter) screwed!

Andrew Mellein

This could have been different for Kimmy, you’re right. Doing what she did with Hyun was completely unnecessary, and just unleashed more lies to Josh, and more stories she has to craft to cover her tracks. She’s not going to be able to contain Hyun if she hurts her. She’s also really getting off on her cruelty to Josh. It’s too much. They need to do whatever ever it is they’re doing together, but they’re not. It’s all been Kimmy, and she is a crafty liar. I was actually surprised to see her feeling so badly and afraid that Josh was gone. She acts so mean and dominating towards him, and even worse in her mind. Which one is the real Kimmy? She goes from a “humiliatrix” to a sobbing mess with the snap of a finger. Even when her back is against the wall, yet again, her first impulse it to craft another lie, instead of being honest with Josh about what happened and what she wants. He’s liable to want it too. Everything she does eventually turns him on. I’m wondering if Josh has left her for good? Or did he just go over to Devlin’s? I have a feeling that KT is going to throw something good in here. It’s too predictable for Josh to go to Devlin’s and then back to Kimmy. He left her once before for Rome. Maybe he went back there? I wonder if Meyer will find out and the news gets back to Hyun. Obviously, this isn’t going to end well, but there are so many options.

Kat

Acheron could be the river of pain as well as the god. A pathway into hell. That’s where she has to go to recover her love, Josh, who has been lured away by the devil.

CSH

Notice out of Kimmy's priorities after coming home. None of it had to do with revealing she was pregnant to Josh (her husband). Makes you wonder!

Andrew Mellein

Looks like I was right and Josh split and went to Devlin's. I wonder what's going to happen there? I'd like to think (predict) Devlin will show Josh a good time and hook him up with one of Devlin's lady friends (part of Devlin's scheme to get in good with Kimmy and for Josh to be a voyeur!) but who knows. What I do know is I love this chapter KT! I love to see Kimmy sweat and worry for change just like in Rome. Does anyone think that Kimmy sounds unstable (from her POV) like she has a split personality? I think she needs psychological medical help! Also notice how after sex Kimmy wanted to make Josh breakfast and take him out house hunting but there was no mention of her revealing her pregnancy to him. Its only alluded to when she fears Josh is going to leave her and Kimmy tells herself it's Josh's (Right!) but we already know that Kimmy is a massive liar. So I cant wait for the Josh/Devlin chapter! That's going to be good!

Andrew Mellein

Liked this chapter much more than the whole episode with Hyun. We get more and more insight into her thinking here. Perhaps those rejoicing in her suffering are celebrating prematurely. I expect that when she finds out Josh is with Devlin she will transform from trying to save him from Devlin into accepting that she cannot. That’s when she will either finally break with Devlin or accept to break Josh with Devlin. It’s likely she would see Josh going to Devlin as Josh betraying her and colluding with their enemy against her. It’s also possible Devlin told him the truth and after that she will either have to give Josh up or subjugate him completely.

CSH

She definitely deserves it. I love this chapter... I just can't help but feel a bit awful inside about it. Mostly because if Kimmy had just made better decisions in the first couple of books, this could have turned out spectacular for her and Josh. Instead, Kimmy's on the floor crying, hurting horribly because she couldn't pull her head out of her backside long enough to realize just how detrimental her actions have been to Josh. And so here we are. I'm wondering if she's going to fuck up and let slip that she did something with Hyun, thinking Josh knows only to find out later he didn't, causing even further catastrophe for Hyun as well.

L_S87

I'm kind of wondering this myself. Or if it's an allusion to the death of their relationship. Kimmy walks in practically whistling she's so happy and... wham.

L_S87

KT, are we headed to another Cherry Blossoms finale? Acheron makes you confess your sins and then you die. He’s best buds with Thanatos after all.

Donkatsu

I believe she’s finally went over the deep end,but it will last only till she sucks Josh back in.I would assume Josh went to Devlin’s!

Tim ziegler

This sucks. No, not your chapter, KT. This was spectacularly well written. No... you know that awful feeling you get when you wish something bad on someone because you *know* they deserve it.... and then it miraculously happens and you realize their suffering in the aftermath was so much worse than you thought it would be. That disgusting, slimy feeling which follows that tells you that you're better than this, to wish something so awful on someone. Yeah.... Kimmy SO deserves this, but... it feels despicable to enjoy it, or to have even wanted it. Not the least of which is because you know that whatever Josh is going through to make him do this is just as bad. The saddest part here? Kimmy is SO right in her assessment of their relationship and how perfect she and Josh are for each other. They truly are complementary. Yin and Yang. His kinks mesh with hers as if they were carved from the same mold. But... Those kinks put her in the driver's seat of their relationship. They require her to be the leader, the voice of reason, to know when to push and when to practice moderation. And she's awful at these things. She finds it impossible to tell her pussy no. Every time she's in one of these situations, her desires override her good sense or her guilt and she does it anyway. And that's not what Josh and their relationship needs. She said she would protect Josh. That also means protecting him from herself and her most base of inclinations to revel in detestable and vile acts because the worse they are, the more it turns her on. You could almost see it happen here, where she wanted to blame Josh at the end, to make it his fault, to use his kink to "solve" this problem. But she pulled herself back from it. Made Josh and his well being the priority, *finally*. Unfortunately it may be too little too late. The craziest part is, this whole thing is coming to fruition based on a bullshit lie by Devlin that gullible Josh seems to have believed, all because Kimmy twisted him up so bad that now trusting Devlin somehow makes more sense than trusting Kimmy. Upside down world, Kimmy, and you created it.

L_S87

Wow, shit gettin’ real now, girl. Kimmy really could not see any of this coming? Well, that is pretty much what happens in those lower circles. Self reflection takes a back seat to maintaining the successful operation. As to Devlin’s role. Gotta figure the boys were drinking expensive whiskey and are sleeping it off now.

Donkatsu

Omg, I loved this chapter KT! Seeing Kimmy like this is making me cheer. Lol Even if the next chapter Josh comes back, at least Kimmy has been reduced to tears and shame again, like when he was in Rome. Yay! I love that Kimmy came home to an empty apartment. Haha Great title, too. I so hope this is the start of Kimmy’s trip down the river of woe.
