DITW 12-7: Canto XXVII

Josh didn’t answer, instead turning away and following his gaze, moving to the window to look down on the street.

Kimmy hung her head, realizing a scenario. “Devlin moved the meeting up. There is no meeting today. Is there?”

Josh didn’t answer, playing the forlorn fool, lost in spiritual reverie at the window.

She repeated herself. “Is there, Josh?”

“Damned if I know, Kimmy. I’m here.”

“You are,” she said. “Where you shouldn’t be.”

Now he turned, his face aggravated. “Why? Because this is your world? This is your world of high finance and foreign business dealings, and billion dollar clients, and fine wines and magnificent lunches?” He scowled, but before she could answer, he continued. “Your world of extravagant suites and Cayman vacations, and seven-thousand fucking dollar suits?” He grabbed his suit lapel and flashed the jacket at her. “I’m not allowed in this world. At least you don’t think so.”

“Bull shit,” she said. “You think I like this world?”

“I think you fucking love it, Kimmy. Are you crazy? Look at you. You’re in absolute glory.”

She put a fist to her cheek, staring aside toward the fine carpet. “You think I’m leaving you behind? Is that it?”

“Aren’t you? Aren’t you just stringing me along, placating me until something better comes along?”

She dropped her hand to her side, scoffing, showing him an expression of pure offense. “Josh. What is wrong with you? Why would you say something like that?”

“How is it not true, Kimmy?”

“Have I let you down? Haven’t I included you the whole way? I see you every night. I lay by your side in bed. I play games with you, the games you like. I brought you to Cayman, I... I’ve never stopped loving you.”

Josh’s head inclined, his eyes showing unsureness, his features betraying the wounds she’d caused but now defended.

She steadied herself, stood straighter. “If you spent the night with Devlin, how is that not betraying me?”

“How would it betray you?”

“Did you spend the night with him?”

“Why would you ask me that?”

“I don’t see you sleeping on Meyer’s couch with Sophie home. How would you explain that? And you weren’t in her bed. You didn’t come home. Where were you? Where did you sleep?”

“Were you at home?”

She said, “And the fact that you’re here. How did you know where to come? Who could have told you?”

“You wonder what else he told me.”

She chuckled in pure disbelief. “Why would you believe anything he told you?”

Josh shrugged, and she didn’t like his arrogant gesture or tone. “Why would I believe anything you tell me?”

Her brow lowered. “Because I know the truth, Josh. Devlin doesn’t. Devlin couldn’t.”

Josh raised his eyebrows and shook his head. “What is truth, anyway?”

“The truth is, you’ve ambushed me here where I’m supposed to be working, and your head’s been filled with who-knows-what by a guy who’s always treated you like shit.”

Josh’s mouth moved around, but he didn’t respond. She knew he was flirting with saying she treated him the same way. She stared at him, daring him to say such an untrue and hurtful thing.

After a long moment of saying nothing, she spoke. “You and your buddy Devlin brought me here to bully me, to push me around. You’re his lackey.”

Josh rubbed his chin, walked away and turned to the window again, rolling his head around on his neck. He said, “That’s not it at all.”

“He’s coming through that door, isn’t he? You’re his emcee, he’s the main act? And then what? What are you going to do to me then?”

Josh rubbed his face with both hands, then ran fingers through his hair. He turned to face her, his posture more open now, more submissive. “This isn’t some kind of intervention, if that’s what you’re thinking. That’s not what I’m here for.”

“If Devlin comes through that door, Josh, I swear to god...”

“Kimmy...” He paused before continuing, closing his eyes to gather his fleeting thoughts. “Whatever it is you’ve been doing, have you been doing it to hurt me?”

She steel-eyed him. “I don’t ever want to hurt you, Josh.”

“And that’s why you lie?”

She clucked her tongue, dismissed his argument with a wave, and turned to the table, beginning to pack up the things she’d laid out for the Benny Chan meeting. “This is so unfair, Josh. You sandbagging me like this. It’s not how you treat someone. This has Devlin written all over it.”

Behind her, quiet: “Stop, Kimmy. Stop.”

She ceased her chaotic packing and stood straight, crossing her arms, still showing Josh her back.

“Tell me you don’t want to hurt me.”

She faced him, uncrossing her arms. “I would never hurt you on purpose, Josh. I love you. I would do anything for you. I’m doing everything for you. I mean, I’m working toward something. Something for us. You said you trusted me.”

“You asked me to trust you.”

“And you don’t trust me?”

“You lie to me.”

“We’re back to where we started now, Josh.” She looked at the door again. “Is Devlin coming or not?”

Josh moved into the bedroom again and sat on the foot of the bed, twining his fingers together, hands clasped between his knees. He looked worn out and tired; the confident defiance he’d showed took a lot out of him. “Can you tell me why you did this to me?”

“What did I do to you?”

He chuckled and bit his lower lip—like he was biting his tongue, stopping himself from saying what he really wanted to say. “Pretend I know every lie you told me. Now, why did you do it?”

She crossed her arms. “You’re talking down to me.”

“I’m not,” he said, patting the bed next to him. “Sit with me and talk. You wanted to talk. Let’s talk.”

The seeking of companionship was a hopeful sign, and she responded. She joined him at the foot of the bed, both of them facing the table with Benny Chan’s contracts. They were quiet for a while.

Josh said, “I sandbagged you. I did. If I didn’t, you’d have a thousand lies ready for me.”

“What an awful characterization.”

“Isn’t it true?”

She sensed him looking at her and regarded him. “Are you trying to hurt me?”

His face softened. “No, Kimmy. I don’t want that. I want this to end.”

She was perplexed, reading too much into his words and worried he meant the marriage. “What is it you want ended?” She lost her nerve to keep their gazes connected, looking away in case she revealed the power he held.

“What you’re doing to me. Lying, deceiving, sneaking. Getting what you want and telling me it’s what I want.”

She regarded him again, studying him, assessing him, forcing her anger-pulled features to relax. “You think I’m selfish?”

“You’re not?”

“How about you, Josh? Would you like my psychoanalysis? Would you like me to break you down and ask you all the questions about how all the pieces fit together? I wouldn’t do that to you because I respect you. I respect your amazing gifts and I respect your flaws, too. I love all of you.”

“You think I’m wrong to question your flaws? To bring them out so we can look at them? I know you know they’re there. I can’t talk about them?” He gestured with both hands to the space in front of them. “They’re like the proverbial elephant in the room.”

She set her jaw. “Name my flaw.”

Josh didn’t hesitate. “You’re a manipulator.”

She palmed her forehead, not believing what she was hearing. “Wow, Josh. So, what? You hate me?”

“No. I let you do it. I let you manipulate me.”

“That’s your flaw? I’m a manipulator and you’re the victim? You’re presenting that as your flaw?”

“I have more than one flaw.”

She sighed and patted her slicked back hair and her bun. “You know, you came in here with your hands in your pockets and I was so happy to see you. I had no idea you were here to beat me up. It was strange at first, seeing you trying to be strong, putting your chin up like you weren’t afraid.”

“Because you don’t think I’m strong?”

“You’re not strong, Josh. You’re not. I’m strong. I’m the backbone of our marriage. You’re the heart.”

“You don’t think I’m strong? So I’m weak?”

“I think you’re perfect, Josh. You’re everything I want.” Her tone had become pleading.

“But I need to know my place?”

“That’s not what I’m saying, Josh,” she said, stood up and walked away, stopping to brace herself, hands on the back of one of the executive chairs. “I don’t want to fight with you. I love you.”

She listened to Josh stand and sigh. He came near her.

She said, “I don’t want to lie. I want to tell you the truth.”

“That’s not what I want.”

She turned to face him, leaning on the chair back. “It’s not?”

He looked away. “I couldn’t bear it. I’m afraid of what it might be.”

“Then how do you know they were lies at all?”

“You said I’m the heart. You’re the backbone and I’m the heart. That’s how I know.”

She chanced touching him again, and he didn’t stop her, but as she placed her hand on his cheek, his head turned, as though she’d delivered a slap in slow motion.

“If I love you, Josh, and you love me, and you don’t want to hear the truth, then where does that leave us?”

“Here in this hotel room,” he said, taking her hand from his cheek and holding it. “Trying to find out how we move forward.”

“I told you to trust me, but you don’t. And that’s okay. How do I prove it to you? How do I make you feel secure?”

He waited a few heartbeats, eyes flitting. Then: “Show me.”

“Show you I’m trustworthy?”

“Sure,” he said.

“I can do that. I want to do that.”

“And show me how you do it.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Everything you did you did for me, is that right?”

“That’s right.”

“Then why hide it?”

Her eyes darted as she sought meaning in his cryptic words. She found meaning, but didn’t want to believe it. “What are you saying?” She feared she knew.

He dropped her hand and looked like he would walk away again, but his feet stayed planted. “I— I think you broke me. You know that? You know what I mean by broken?”

“Tell me.”

“Nothing works. I don’t know one thing from another anymore. You lie and I believe it. You tell the truth and I believe it. I’m your biggest defender, even when I know better. I’m like an eager public defender assigned the most guilty client and all I do is flood my perspective with their virtue. How else can I get up every day and appear in court with them unless I put on the world’s darkest sunglasses to blot out what’s right in front of me?”

“I’m not a criminal.”

“Are you guilty?”

She raised her chin. “I’ve lied.”

“You lied for my benefit. Do you hear how that sounds?”

“Yeah, Josh. Do you?”

“If it was for my benefit, where’s the benefit? Where’s my gold, where’s my treasure?”

“What more do you want?”

“I want what you owe me. You took so much from me, mortgaged little pieces of my trust again and again, and now I’m here for what you owe me.”

She closed her eyes and shook her head.

“I want relief, Kimmy. I want reprieve. I want all the pain that hounds me when I close my eyes to leave me alone. I want all the bad things you’ve done made right. I want your lies to make the truth real. Make it mine. Make it for me.”

She bowed her head, struggling to see the paths that led away from this point, believing—knowing—another man set this point in motion. These couldn’t be Josh’s words. “He doesn’t care about you, Josh. Did he make you think he did?”

Josh stayed firm. “Make it real.”

Now she imitated Josh’s own wounded chuckling, turning away from Josh and taking a step, head still bowed, rubbing her brow. “Not with him, Josh. Not with him. Anyone but him.”

“It would be meaningless.”

She turned again. “Are you really asking me this? Why on earth do you think you can ask me that?”

Still, Josh stayed firm, his eyes showing strength again, narrowed like what he would say carried significant weight. “You knew I wanted it before I wanted it. . . . Don’t you see your absolution?”

Comments

I think there’s a possible bittersweet ending here where Josh gets what he wants and then walks away realizing he didn’t really want it after all.

CSH

I just realized (though I sorta said it elsewhere) Kimmy (who is kinda Josh's gold, & treasure) calls Josh the heart... and dear departed Emily D famously asserted that the heart wants what the heart wants... it could be argued that Emily's got what it wanted... so maybe there is hope outside Kimmy's box! It's often presumptuous to underestimate the patsy... even in matters of the heart.

Bill F Protagoras

But I have faith in Kimmy! We all make mistakes...

Bill F Protagoras

If Josh gets to see and hear her as she was in "Sinner" making snide sniggering pitiless jokes with her fancy man... she can kiss Josh's sweet ass goodbye... Devlin's Pet...

Bill F Protagoras

She is the one facing trial by fire... Vanity of vanities... Yea, even this is vanity. Josh has the strength of endurance too... but his patience is wearing thin and not because of mere lies, but because she is teetering on the brink of a barefaced act of betrayal. It's not just the absence of divine love that is hell... but Kimmy will get over it, and so will Josh, and he will be stronger for it. And Kimmy will have a mouthful of dust because, though no Herodotus, Devlin is a papí de mentiras.

Bill F Protagoras

If Kimmy is not careful she is going to lose everything she claims to love because day after day, she has looked out windows of Stone's Brokerage or some other Devlin real estate and been unaware that his insinuating voice has been susurrating in her ductile mind... "only bow down and worship me and all this shall be yours."

Bill F Protagoras

She is strong in the sense that she can survive, and in fact thrive, where her lust has dragged her. Josh is about to have his wings burned as a moth in a candle.

Rocambole50

and a "what he doesn't know can't hurt him" attitude which has her enthusiastically joining in with Devlin in ridiculing her husband behind his back... making her base betrayals a justification for the boss's despicable humiliation of Josh solely to ramp up the perverse pleasures she had become addicted to... She slowly abetted in the agnostic equivalent of selling her own soul for whatever the flesh of her husband's quondam high school bully's dick could possibly be valued at.... Now she finds herself struggling in the clutches of the self deception that Devlin's malicious machinations have brought her and Josh to... The only thing that can help them is to come to understand and know themselves and each other... before it's too late... if it isn't already... And one thing is certain, without a deus ex machina neither of the forlorn duo seems capable of resurrecting their union alone.

Bill F Protagoras

Kimmy thinks herself strong yet the first three episodes of DITW show us her lack of backbone how she slowly (and not so slowly at that) gives in to Devlin's importuning, seduction and bullying... what she does is succumb to the characteristics that she professes to dislike him for. She obsesses about the same shallow self serving things that enable Devlin to hide his intrinsic lack of worth as a human being...she cloaks the weakness she showed in betraying her own secure relationship with a cynical disregard for Josh's needs

Bill F Protagoras

all good names for the Stone spawn... Babylon is a girl's name... oft accompanied by the sobriquet Whore.

Bill F Protagoras

Certainly...

Bill F Protagoras

Appollyon?

CSH

Mephistopheles perhaps? Diabolus? Diablillo?

CSH

Although Maite is alright...

Bill F Protagoras

Any version were Devlin brings up (or neglects) anybody's child... obviously. Josh would love a child if he brought it up with Kimmy, and even without her, and HE wouldn't call it Damian or Babylon the Mighty.

Bill F Protagoras

Which is worse? Josh raises the child which turns out to be Devlin’s or Josh leaves Kimmy who winds up with Devlin and Devlin raises the child who turns out to be Josh’s?

CSH

"Nowhere near"... measure twice then cut!

Bill F Protagoras

And those Greek Tragedies are no near as funny as Shakeshaft's

Bill F Protagoras

More importantly who the baby's daddy or other mum will be... now that involved extended families and tribes are becoming rarer... who wants to be brought up by soccer fans... or be brought up by the Devlin... that could become a Greek tragedy!

Bill F Protagoras

Look at all the comments for this chapter🤣🤣🤣 I’m so down for getting the paperback book copies of all this series! So I can add it to my KT book collection🤣I think it’s one of KT’s top five best epic book series. I think I love the cheating angle because I like the drama and conflict that is resolved around it rather than being a typical “Hotwife” novel where the couple is in it together. I like characters doing shitty things🤣🤣 I’ll say that at this point Kimmy and Josh are lucky they don’t have kids like Pete and Jess from Learning Lessons because It makes them splitting much more easier although by making Kimmy pregnant it adds more drama of who the baby daddy is!

Andrew Mellein

To erase all evidence of the crime? Or to administer the wellness protocol... and earn the wages of sin?

Bill F Protagoras

I wonder when the next chapter is out? I can’t stop thinking about these characters and dreading what’s going to happen next🤣🤣

Andrew Mellein

Bingo!

Andrew Mellein

You do realize that the myth of Pandora does imply that after letting loose all the ills that plague us mortals, she shut away hope... which seems to me a fairly spiteful or plainly sadistic act. Maybe her husband advised her on the matter. Instead of getting what we hope for... we are left with what we expect!

Bill F Protagoras

The recording Kimmy made of her and Devlin’s act for Josh. Josh never heard the whole tape. What’s the bet Devlin had his phone recording as well?

Tracey52

It was the cleaner that entered the apartment.

Tracey52

Kimmy has got herself into a nasty situation. Is Devlin going to show up? Where the fuck is Josh's head at? To what degree has Devlin told Josh the truth? What proof of does Devlin provide to Josh. Unless Kimmy come forward with the full truth, she runs the risk of losing Josh. I don't think her Jedi mind tricks will work this time. She has to tell the truth it's the only way out. Josh loves her and will forgive if she comes clean. But will Kimmy's lawyer ego allow the truth? There are quite a few unanswered questions: Who came into Devlin's the afternoon Kimmy was playing with her new toy? Is Hyun just a Kimmy plaything or she going to play a more substantial roll in the story? Josh's cuckold fantasies, were they triggered by Devlin's comments in the tent that night at the reunion? What is Devlin's endgame? Was his purpose just to take something away from Josh. Does he really want Kimmy? Baby, who's your daddy? KT what a tale!

RCH

I wonder about that visit as well. Might the encounter at the hotel have been preplanned? Might she have actually known Josh would be there?

CSH

I think you hit on the important point here. Josh needs to know if he can handle seeing them together. He knows he wants it, isn’t sure what’s real and what isn’t and just needs to know. He can’t trust Kimmy or Devlin to tell him the truth.

CSH

A good opinion except for the "can't escape fate" part... if we can't escape fate there is no free will... I believe many worlds theory because apart from patching up holes in quantum physics, it also permits the freewill that classical physics sort of put the kibosh on... fate is looking back and saying this is how we got here... any one who thinks it can be done in reverse shouldn't take up gambling... probability knows no mercy.

Bill F Protagoras

But of course we can have two masters... we can even serve two masters... as many as fit inside our minds, and of all the many masters (or mistresses) in there we accept many of them pragmatically, and many of them gladly, and those we struggle against, resent, and try to reject don't go away just by wishing them to... Remember we "know" nothing... a precept that stops us from being too presumptuous... my opinion... but not "only" my opinion...

Bill F Protagoras

Kimmy loves Josh and Josh loves her. But they are trapped in the maelstrom and cannot escape fate. Josh should have trusted her. She would have protected him, dosing the pain and mixing with sugar. But he does not like to accept his weakness and has taken a terrible initiative that is going to expose him to a dose difficult to survive. Amidst her sorrow for him, she will be probably upset, afraid that her empathy for him transmits the harm to her. The way to self-protect herself from this pain can be to convert it in dark pleasure. So the outlook is not bright for good and loyal Josh.

Rocambole50

Good point of view. I believe you can't have 2 masters....The trust and loyalty is shattered in a million pieces. Either way too damage has been done and is continuing to be done. No one should be happy in the end of this one. There will be loss. KT as always has us guessing about carnage.

Mike Monroe

But this refrain keeps going through my head... something is happening here and you don't know what it is...

Bill F Protagoras

Love is a shared illusion/delusion and until one of the people in a relationship believes that the love is over they share love... as I mentioned elsewhere people confuse, or are not accepting of sharing some types of love. For instance if someone starts loving, lets say, a third person in an erotic fashion they will receive less love. This is so common that we have sibling rivalry and sexual jealousy, jealousy about our friends... Kimmy thinks she loves Josh so she does... even though she might want the physical attentions of someone else. Josh loves Kimmy too, but is quite understandably upset that she is using the erotic defence mechanism he uses to distract himself from a perceived reduction of her affection... because the human dildo and prime example of conspicuous consumption, and excessive wealth she had become obsessed with using to frig herself senseless and also improve their life is also a bully who despises Josh... So the problem is the good old fashioned RD Laing knots... Josh thinks, if K really loves me she wouldn't cheat on and lie to me even though I have been giving her mixed signals... And Kimmy thinks if Josh really loves me he would realize that Devlin has only been something I have used for multiple orgasms as well as to improve our lives and if you'll just have faith... I have a cunning plan. But he maybe thinks he has a cunning plan too...

Bill F Protagoras

There are spoilers about other books... Well, in Kit Marlowe's Faustus the bad boy ended badly, Goethe's... he was somehow redeemed, in The Master and Margarita the soviet system got the piss taken out of it and we got Sympathy for the Devil, with Paradise Lost we got a brilliant rebel angel who convinced William Blake that Milton was of the devil's party unbeknownst to himself, with the Inferno we got the rest of the Divine Comedy... so a draw... Maggie was, despite all the evidence to the contrary, a comedy, though technically it isn't over yet... Cherry Blossom was a brilliant bitter sweet piece of art which stops at the right point... certainly it transcended happily-ever-afterness and was extremely cathartic... also it brimmed over with what used to be called pornography, and what some of us now think of as good filthy fun... with Losing the Wife I felt great when the tiny but loveable worm turned and dealt with the truly loathsome turd who took his wife... though ethically speaking Jess turned into a bit of a cunt (and I don't mean that in a good way) the Lesson She Learned was a bit harsh... I felt kinda sorry for her after watching her slowly turn into a meanspirited cuckolding slag, however, by the end I thought the new life opening before her could be overkill... but she had Pete and the kids in her corner... Nia could certainly give Kimmy a run for her money and would win the race... but both Nia and Kimmy were, except for cheating on their husbands, venal sinners...Nia's real sin was if anything against Odie, Kimmy's greatest sin is hubris, snobbery of a kind, being willing to risk her marriage for a pleasantly big dicked (sociopath) bully, underestimating Josh because he's not a blustering macho... and, as you've obviously already noticed, none of that really matters, cos KT is not going to give us a simplistic Miss Prism ending... and I for one am reading this book because the feeling of uncertainty it gives me is good for what ails me... And last but not least the top quality smut... I mean eroticism!

Bill F Protagoras

All valid points but to me Kimmy is the Devil in the waters relationship.. period...She has been from Bk 1 to present...Did Josh for this ...I think not but he has been a Simp...I know he knows the truth..has to..it's been so evident in his face ..from the party at the restaurant..to Cayman lost time ...He is just allowing himself to be pulled by the women he mistakenly believe loves him and had his best interest at heart and his life long bully who he allows to hold him hostage. The Humiliation ..the manipulation all of this should make any normal person cut this out ..Or want to burn the earth around both of them. KT has been marvelous in this tale. Love these discussions and opinions...We will see how tragic this ending will be ...will it be a Maggie. ..A cherry blossom or a losing his wife lesson.

Mike Monroe

There is, however, one line of dialogue in there that really has my curiosity piqued... Also, kindly one, some superb ad hoc realism in the way the dialogue functions, and conclusions are jumped to, and eke times also over!

Bill F Protagoras

But, if she gives Josh what he says he "needs," then all the sins are washed away. That's how I see it.

L.

The music of Ballad of a Thin Man was playing in the background all through that heated exchange... our ignorance is probably as great as theirs...

Bill F Protagoras

We can only hope…

CSH

A lot of ugliness from Kimmy here, oof.

Glaucon

Agree that Kimmy is pissed off that she is not in control of the story Josh hears anymore. She does not know where things are going either, unless the secret visit to Devlin’ hatched yet another nefarious plot.

Donkatsu

This just made me think... Why did God wait six days to rest why didn't he have a break in the middle to have a shepherd's pie and a pint? Mmmh, I forgot ineffability!

Bill F Protagoras

Collingwood, historian and philosopher, not the Admiral, said that what marked the true ability (especially in sculpture) to create a work of art (or writing in general) is knowing WHEN to stop...

Bill F Protagoras

There seems to be a sentiment that there is about to be some sort of climax leading to a conclusion... I think... or hope ( before Kimmy seals it back up in her box ), that it's just that KT is gonna grant us our drooling deviant desires, then take that long spoon (she keeps in case she sups with the devil) and stir that shit up! She did imply that, if necessary, she was gonna take her own sweet time to wind us down and give us a fitting denouement... I have my fingers crossed.

Bill F Protagoras

Josh is going to be in for a rough time! I wish he didn’t ask for this but instead hired a P.I. to follow Kimmy as that would been a better option. Should have talked to Meyer instead of Devlin! At first I was for this exposing Kimmy but now after rereading the chapter I’m not so sure🤣🤣🤣 Kimmy is going to totally gaslight and blame him for this and you know she’s going to enjoy it as well as being with Devlin! Might help induce her to continue fucking Devlin because Josh asked for it. I do think it’s possible Josh won’t learn the truth from this encounter but it will cause further damage to him. I think Hyun has a bigger plan in this and might be the catalyst to take Kimmys house of cards down! Especially if she resumes seeing Devlin and Hyun finds out!

Andrew Mellein

Yep. I've brought up this exact point before in discussions during the last book. That conversation showed that Kimmy had no real interest in stopping their activities until Devlin did something that affected her directly. All the bullying or other activities against Josh (like at the party) didn't hold much weight. Yes, she made warnings, but that's all they we're, words. It wasn't until Devlin did something that caused Josh to turn on her that she got pissed off. Josh's reaction was extreme enough and hurt her enough that she threw it all on Devlin and decided to punish him. But to your point, none of that means she doesn't still want him, she's just massively hacked off that Devlin rocked the boat without her approval and it negatively affected her safety net with Josh. The worse things got with Josh, the angrier she's become with Devlin. I think most of her desire to have nothing to do with him stems from a lack of trust, rather than a lack of desire, because she thinks he'll do something even worse next time. And he will. Josh is about to find that out the hard way, I think.

L_S87

I’ve always been a supporter of the Kimmy character in her evil plans and much less sympathetic to Josh than many others here. I look at the two of them as drug addicts as their behavior fits two people in the grip of obsession. And yes Josh is even more obsessed than Kimmy. Right now it seems a race to the bottom as they compete to see who can do the dumbest most self destructive thing first. Josh presents this as him being the courageous martyr and plunging into the fire where he will emerge a fire hardened spear having cleansed all their sins. Devlin has somehow planted that idea in his head. It’s more likely he will be burned to ashes. Josh “doesn’t want the truth” because he doesn’t need it. He knows the truth and always has. He wants to see who he really is. But what if he really just turns out to be a pathetic humiliated cuckold who wallows in his masochism? After all, he doesn’t even have the courage to just speak honestly with his wife about her affair. This new path isn’t bravery, it is self-indulgence of the worst kind. It’s Josh willingly being the martyr and sacrificing himself for his love. I loved Kimmy’s heart and mind analogy. So true but unfortunately the type of contemplative hindsight one gains after a relationship ends. How much intelligence and strength did she show when she seduced Hyun? Wasn’t that actually a cry of desperation? Kimmy’s affair with Hyun will eventually destroy everything - how could it not? Kimmy has spent the entire series trying to manipulate Josh into acquiescing to watching her screwing Devlin and now when he says yes, she says - no way, that’s crazy. Partly I suspect she realizes it’s the worst thing he could ask for himself and that she will never be able to look at him in the same way again. Partly, she thinks Josh belongs to her and Devlin is trying to take him away from her. But there is another option that goes to the issue of what we see transpiring versus what is actually transpiring. Is Kimmy’s reluctance a way to sucker Josh in and blame him once the horrible nature of what he’s asking for is apparent? That would fit our pattern. It will once again be Josh’s fault. And Devlin said they would make Josh beg for it. Are Kimmy and Devlin still secretly conspiring to bring Josh around? Tricky. On one level I would love if this is all a sort of literary deception. Kimmy and Devlin seeming to fight over Josh now but it turns out to be a disagreement over tactics and who is in charge while they are still largely working together to trap him into a cuckold relationship. That’s pretty evil, but would add a whole other layer to these later books.

CSH

I think Kimmy is mostly mad at Devlin because he couldn’t leave things the way they were and had to rush it. Remember the conversation in the car with Devlin when he said, we have had a good thing going and she essentially agreed and accused him of “ruining it” by planting the underwear in the couch. He ruined her relationship with Josh so now she hates him. Naturally enough - but I doubt she has any will to resist Devlin sexually. She claimed she never liked him anyway, she was just sexually attracted to him.

I agree, Devlin needs to get what’s coming to him, especially for everything he’s done to Josh. I don’t think KT would mention a PI in two different chapters without it meaning something. Josh is the weak one in the relationship, but he can’t possibly be so weak as to team up with Devlin, and expect things to work out well for him. There are a lot of missing parts here. We don’t know when Josh met up with Devlin and what was said. We also don’t know what happened two nights earlier when Kimmy went to Devlin’s building all dressed up in her suit and heels. She was going up to his apartment, wasn’t she? There has to be more here. KT’s probably holding back details in order to shock and awe us later.

Kat

100% it’s KT’s writing that has me so invested in these characters and story. I’m nervous for what’s next!

Kat

I'm kind of hoping Devlin gets his later. While Kimmy is right in her assessment that Josh isn't the strong one of their relationship (at least now, wasn't always that way) I hope he has enough of a backbone to have cooked up something beyond this ill conceived notion that teaming up with Devlin will ever give him what he wants. That PI is waiting in the wings (hopefully) and will serve Devlin his comeuppance at Josh's behest. Would be sort of fitting for Devlin to pierce Josh's heart using Kimmy then for Josh to get ultimate revenge, even if it would feel damn hollow given how this is probably going to go with Kimmy Because if Josh, Kimmy and Hyun are all going to implode, then dammit, Devlin better also or I'm going to be miffed!

L_S87

@L_S87 Kimmy seems really against this idea. There’s almost a dread in her, when only a few books earlier it was an active fantasy for her. It’s almost like sex with Devlin was a drug, and she doesn’t want to succumb to him again. Up until a couple chapters ago, I didn’t see it heading this way either. KT’s writing in that one paragraph put it in perspective for me. I had to read that chapter several times. It makes sense to me now. It’s going to go badly for everyone but Devlin. I’m dying to read it, though.

Kat

This is a very valid point. NONE of us would feel as strongly as we do about these characters and the paths they choose if KTs writing wasn't so spectacular as to draw us in and convince us to become emotionally invested in the outcome. At some point, Josh is going to break, I don't know when or how, but I feel like Devlin is going to wait until the exact moment when Josh thinks he's going to get his gold and then turn it into lead with a comment or action clearly directed to destroy him. Because Devlin will love that just as much as he will love having Kimmy again.

L_S87

I know I’m going to feel like shit reading the next couple chapters but also mesmerized by KT’s writing. Sort of like Josh🤣🤣🤣

Andrew Mellein

I love a lot of this... except my reading of the state of play is that Kimmy did not do all this FOR herself, though she did to some extent collude in doing it TO herself... Speak O muse of how the overweening pride of Kimmy maker of kitty baskets came to bring low the House of the Waters... Hubris... Bloody hubris! I only find solace in the fact that the Iliad was not a tragedy... touch wood... and who doesn't love fleet footed Achilles juvenile crossdresser and accomplished slayer of men... Yes, I did make a comparison between Achilles and Kimmy. An epic tale is an epic tale. Sorry Kat, it was a good well reasoned post full of great ideas... sometimes I just get carried away...

Bill F Protagoras

I like this. You're right, Kat. My struggles here are that Josh has SO often said that he doesn't want the truth because it would hurt to much that it's become canon. It's not a passing statement that can just be waved away or easily redirected. Which is why I struggle with the dichotomy of the two seemingly conflicting points of view. Ultimately I think your assessment is the accurate one on what Josh is looking for and more importantly, why he is looking for it. Also spot on with the assertion that he is 99.9% likely not to get what he's hoping for out of this. Assuming he does still want to salvage something with Kimmy. All of this assumes Kimmy does give in, of course. She's pretty damn solid on the nope train right now. Wonder how she gets convinced otherwise.

L_S87

Yes, to be fair, Kimmy and Josh are far from what most would consider "well adjusted". For them, doing the "right thing" typically equals the opposite of what you would assume. I just struggle because this seems to be less about simple or right and more what mosies the story along in a convenient manner towards a goal that everyone has been waiting for. I think we all expected this to happen in some form or fashion, because it's a KT book, after all, and there's been way too much setup for it to just wander off in a different direction, that would be illogical too. I'm just stuck on the "telling me the truth is bad and hurtful, but watching the same exact thing is absolution and okay". I'm like a dog gnawing on that bone and I just can't let it go because I can't wrap my head around what is clearly an illogical statement. What Josh wants from this scenario makes sense, just not the setup to get there. Granted, everything else about this conversation is awesome, and it doesn't happen without Josh capitulating to Devlin (seemingly for the moment, long term planning who knows). It's just a fly in the ointment for me. It probably shouldn't ruin the whole batch, but you can't forget about it, even after you fish it out. Ultimately KT will give us the next couple of chapters and I'll be distracted by the new shiny objects she provides. It's kind of the one downfall of this format. Reading a finished book allows you to plow through parts you dislike and they are immediately washed away by the next chapter that you love.

L_S87

The number of lies Kimmy has told at this point should be too much for any relationship. Everything she’s done with Devlin, the baby and the uncertainty of who the father is, now everything with Hyun. I just don’t know how in her head she ever really thought she could come out on the other side still married to Josh. And for me, she’s still basically gaslighting him…she may not even fully realize it. I guess we’ll see how it plays out, but honestly have very little sympathy for Kimmy. Josh has certainly been a party to this, but his desires didn’t propel Kimmy into this amazing house of cards she’s constructed, which appears to be about ready to collapse on top of her.

JL23

The PI thing is the interesting twist, he told Meyer specifically it was not to investigate Kimmy. Not sure if she’s trying to dig up dirt on Devlin’s business dealings? This would be out of character for the Josh we know to be planning some kind of intricate trap for Devlin and/or Kimmy. But, maybe we are biased now by Kimmy’s impression of her husband. Maybe he has more backbone than anyone thinks.

JL23

Something which may help, is to recognize that in times of trouble and conflict people tend to seek simple remedies to complicated problems, to put it in language I'll pretend to understand because of its strength as a meme... they are not in the right head space to know what is best for them to reach a satisfactory solution... and the author is trying to help us get our pervy jollies off whilst maintaining some verisimilitude to reality... at least that's what I think at the moment... I sympathise with your plight as I frequently feel the same way... so I put my faith in the author (even if at times she seems to be an avatar of Kali) KT.

Bill F Protagoras

I never thought this story had to end with Josh asking Kimmy to sleep with Devlin in front of him. It didn’t fit, especially in the past two books, with both Josh and Kimmy’s loathing of Devlin reaching new highs, and Kimmy hooking up with Hyun. I didn’t know how it could fit, but KT set it up well in the last paragraph in Chapter 3. Add in the amazing dialogue between K&J in the past two chapters, it all makes sense to me. Josh can’t ask Kimmy to tell him what happened, not because he can’t bear to hear it, but because he needs to see it. He needs to believe her when she tells him that everything she’s done has been for him. He needs the visual evidence. He tells her to ”show me”, “make it real” and “make it mine”. He can’t believe her words. She lies to him and can easily manipulate him to do or think anything. He thinks he’ll be able to get his answers by watching her, seeing her face. He’s told her that she’s broken him, broken his brain. He thinks he’s been totally destroyed, and doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not. This is coupled with his own desires to see it and believe that it’s true. Kimmy has been telling him that everything she’s done she done for him, with his needs and desires being paramount. We know this isn’t true. Kimmy has done this for herself. It started at Tiffany’s party. She and Devlin were in the grass. They were caught, and instead of going back to Josh she made the choice to go inside the house with Devlin. From this point on, everything she did was for herself. Even taking the job was for herself. She claimed she was doing it to make money fast, so they could buy a house and have a family. We know this is only kind of true. What she loved the most, was the power and the luxury the job provided, the praise from her dad, the elevated status she gained, etc. While Josh will probably get what he’s asking for, I don’t think the answer he’s hoping for will be the one that he gets, and the one that will absolve Kimmy. Devlin is going to revel in this. He’s going to taunt and tempt Kimmy into expressing all of her intense desires for him. Josh will most definitely be destroyed by this. He’s going to witness his greatest fears come to life. Kimmy won’t be able to hold back. It may also destroy Kimmy, as well. I see nothing good for K&J’s relationship coming from this, except, of course, some great and painful reading for us. I can’t wait to see how this plays out. KT, thanks for this intense read! You’ve outdone yourself.

Quite the episode!

to stick things in with motiveless malignance to bring pain to the wretch that he, in his insecure black heart believes owns HIS advocate... because plutocrats need to own things... even if it buries those things... in the underworld! Nothing can make up for whatever petty rancour is gnawing away at the root of the tree he, thanks to his father, built his world around. The little we do know about Devlin speaks volumes... big fat volumes that, dear reader, we might BEG to put down... because sometimes hell really is other people and evil really is banal!

Bill F Protagoras

While I have issues with the reasoning and logic behind how this was handled, your comment is one of the areas where it does make sense. Kimmy, for once, does see adamant in her desire not to be with Devlin anymore. She's said it enough and actively avoided it enough that it feels believable, and not just a fabrication. So the only way she would give up her new found strength to resist Devlin is if Josh pushed for her to give it up. Her strength to resist is probably heavily bolstered by the fact she filled the void of no longer having access to Devlin with Hyun. So I think, if not consciously, there is a part of Kimmy that wants Hyun simply because it allows her to more easily resist the temptation of being with Devlin again.

L_S87

Yes, Hyun is innocent, but not that innocent. She has a long time crush on Kimmy which KT set up quite a while ago. Yes, Kimmy is smug and calculating... but she is also, though she won't admit it out of her depth in her dealings with Josh. "I am strong" is her shazam without the magic thunderbolt and the accompanying transformation into the adult alter ego... Fashionable clothes and brazen cheeks do not the woman make... Devlin is not her lover but her nemesis... Josh quite clearly is not merely a foolish puppet with a wooden heart (thank you, Elvis, thank you very much)... he may even no longer be her shelter from the storm... Hyun is her hand to hold...a woman who has been through some shit herself, stronger than she looks, and even though it didn't work with Josh, Kimmy buys her clothes. Kimmy is broken too, she is Devlin's pet lawyer, his fucktoy... his moppet

Bill F Protagoras

Bill F Protagoras

If this happens with Kimmy and Devlin I just can’t see repeat performances in the future with Josh watching unless he likes it! I agree that he should bring Devlin and Kimmy in a room and have them confront each other to see who is lying! But Kimmy is a skilled manipulator so at this point this might be the best option to actually see the act! Josh really at this point has nothing left to lose (not Kimmy) and the only thing he will gain will be truth. Devlin is going to sink his claws into Kimmy and he probably did to Josh. But at point it’s for Josh’s benefit to see Kimmys lies!

Andrew Mellein

Maybe thats the answer that I'm looking for to help with this scenario, @CSH. I know you and others find this to make sense, but for me it's completely illogical to not be okay with Kimmy telling him because it will hurt too much, but watching (which is objectively much worse), well that's just A-Okay. Makes no sense to me. If you're okay with one then you're okay with the other. Which lead me to the conclusion he's okay with neither, but he feels like Kimmy will never tell him the full truth, she's too much of a habitual liar, so he's trying to get it raw and unfiltered by watching them. But wouldn't that process work much better if you asked Kimmy for her version of the truth and then set them up together to show the lie? Kimmy telling him makes no real difference if he's just going to let Devlin "show" him what he's been "missing". So maybe this is all part of an elaborate trap for Devlin. Kimmy too, to catch her lies, but mostly Devlin. It's the only answer I can see now that it's been brought up that makes any sense to me why the two conflicting statements of telling bad, watching good would magically be logical to Josh. Because they both don't matter to the final goal.

L_S87

Was the Hyun affair Kimmy’s attempt to resolve her “Josh, we’re in trouble” realization so that she did not have to go where things are now headed?

Donkatsu

Watching them together probably won’t bring the moment of clarity Josh wants. He conceives of it as catharsis that will cleanse him of his obsession. It will only make that obsession worse. Josh definitely needs out from under the lies but that can only come from Kimmy’s confession or Josh walking away. Neither of those seem likely at the moment. I suspect he’s planning revenge on Devlin somehow, hence the need for the PI.

CSH

At this point I think it’s better for Josh this way. He’ll find through Kimmys actions with Devlin that she was unfaithful. Better to see it with own angst cuckolded eyes rather than more of Kimmys lies and gaslighting down the road. And who cares if this harms their marriage it’s already broken by Kimmys lies and cheating. I don’t care how many times Kimmy says she loves Josh. You don’t continuously cheat on a person and then lie about it and love that person! So if Kimmy falls in lust with Devlin’s sexual stamina during this hook up, I think it might help Josh get out of this toxic relationship. Let the two shitty people have each other. And maybe Josh will be on a road to recovery. But I’m just a commentator who loved this chapter🤣🤣🤣

O would that either one of them would show the wisdom of a Solomon.]

Or a stately pavane will ensue...

Bill F Protagoras

Fools rush in... Pride comes before a fall... neither Josh nor Kimmy has the patience or forbearance not to crash and smoulder in the bonfire of their personal vanities... and Devlin will writhe in ecstasy as in their wilful ignorance they rake each other over the coals to help warm the cockles of his cold cold heart and sate his bridling lust... and also provide the entertainment for the fiendish clients he surely brings in tow...

Bill F Protagoras

Josh has been told innumerable times by Devlin that Kimmy prefers Devlin's cock and skills. She also likes her lifestyle with him. Josh does not provide any of that and cannot expect to ever fill that role. Once Josh sees Kimmy's ecstasy in the sack with Devlin, it will confirm him in his broken state. Or Kimmy will be broken if she bothers to look at what her schtupping does to Josh. But there is really no down side for Devlin. For Josh, seeing is believing, since he does not believe anything that comes out of Kimmy's mouth. He also needs to figure out whether he can handle the truth IRL, unfiltered by Kimmy's prevarications. Great arc, KT!

Donkatsu

All of this is going to blow up in both of there faces. Devlin will get what he wants ..Kimmy may ultimately as well. The BIGGEST loser will be Josh...it was always seems to be destined to destroy Josh completely and he is rushing to his and Kimmy's doomed relationship!

Mike Monroe

Thats the crux of the issue, isn't it? I feel like Josh would have rather Kimmy just confessed long ago, told him the truth about her selfish cheating. That would have been more bearable, salvageable, rather then months of manipulation and lies. Now he doesn't want her to tell him anything because he's worried it might break him and if it doesn't, how can he trust that it wasn't just more lies and half truths from Kimmy to save herself. Saying what she thinks he wants to hear, or her opinion of what he should hear because she's strong, she runs the show. It's a shit hand. Seven deuce off suit. But his stack is so tiny he's all in, no matter how out of position he is. Because this is the corner Kimmy has painted him into.

L_S87

Well, we’ve been waiting on Josh and Kimmy to actually talk for a while. I think it’s completely in character for Josh to ask for this. We saw hints of it in his thinking at Meyer’s. It’s going to be a thousand times worse than what Josh thinks though and Kimmy knows that. She’ll love it when it’s happening though and then she will be both mean as a snake and sweet as an angel to him afterward just to make him happy in his suffering. This chapter is perfect and got all the characters exactly where they need to be. I’m shocked that it was done so easily. Bravo KT.

CSH

And so what happens when Josh realizes she did it for herself and only later realized she could involve Josh and got a kick out of that too?

Tracey52

At first I found this very confusing. It made me feel similar to how I think others felt about Hyun being integrated into this. Josh approaching it this way didn't make sense, to the story or to his personality. I know it's what others wanted, but it feels manufactured, artificial. But, in reading it again, while I still don't care for how this went, I think I see what Josh is angling for. Yes, Devlin is manipulating him, but I think Josh sees that. He's doing this because he wants Kimmy to prove she did this for him, not for herself. She said she lied for him, that she would do anything for him, so prove it. Prove that all those lies weren't to save herself, all the cheating was for his imagination, his game, not her selfish desires. Josh is worried the true lies she's told are not just what she's done, but why she's done it. In seeing them together, he gets his gold, but more importantly, he gets his questions answered. How Kimmy reacts to Devlin will tell Josh everything he needs to know about her motivations. Or so he thinks. The one thing I dont think he's accounted for is Devlin twisting this to cause Josh innumerable pain. Kimmy knows it, but Josh is myopically focused on this one thing, this one answer, and he's lost track of how vulnerable he is by approaching it this way. Then again, Kimmy won't tell him the truth, and Josh doesn't want it because he's worried it would kill him, and more importantly, he can't trust that Kimmy would ever actually tell him what really happen, or her motivations, anyway. Why ask a question when you know the answer will be unsatisfactory? So he's going to try to force Kimmy to answer it a different way. Which is kind of why this feels off to me. What's the difference between watching Kimmy rip his heart out or telling him and ripping his heart out? They both end the same way. So why the weird adamant stance on being told awful and destructive but being shown is okay? (Other than it making a better scene?) My issues aside, i can't wait to see how Kimmy approaches this once Devlin shows up, assuming he does.

L_S87

Wow. It’s happening. I think it had to. I also think Josh is fooling himself that this will absolve anything. Looking forward as always to read how this plays out. Kt, you give us these amazing chapters then leave us hanging on for the next bit.

Tracey52

Wow, another amazing chapter! Josh is asking for her to have sex with Devlin in front of him, and she’s trying not to. Why? Is she afraid that Josh will see how much she likes it, how much she likes it with Devlin? This is what Kimmy was dreaming of back in Book 8, Josh sitting in a chair watching her with Devlin. She might as well just do it already. It’s something the way she says that Devlin is putting all these thoughts in Josh’s head. Yes, he did in the beginning, but Kimmy has lied so much to him he can’t think straight. She’s also sleeping with Hyun on the side. Is it all for Josh? I don’t understand what she means when she says everything she’s done she’s done for Josh. Everything she’s done she’s done for herself.
