DITW 12-8: Orpheus
Added 2023-11-28 22:01:12 +0000 UTCKimmy said, “I can’t be absolved for sins I haven’t committed.”
And Josh made no expression of surprise or objection, staying stone-faced. He said, “Consider the sin your repentance.”
The meaning seemed obvious, and yet she wouldn’t allow her acknowledgment. Salvation had always been something she would have to concoct; a scheme she would lead Josh into for his own sake, a path lined with cushions and bumpers. “I’m not sure I understand, Josh, but... Things with Devlin have become too complicated. I can’t do what I think you’re suggesting. You see, this is why I asked you to trust me. That was only a few days ago. What happened to you?”
He shrugged his defeated shoulders. “I wiped the cobwebs away. I see things differently.”
“I’m a spider to you?”
“You spin webs, Kimmy. Without the cobwebs in the way, I can see who spun them.”
“You’re the one spinning webs right now, these aspersions coming off your tongue.” She narrowed her lips in an expression of grave personal injury. “You think I’m trying to get away with something, but all of this is for you.”
“All of it’s for me,” Josh said somberly, “piece by piece, minute by minute, all until it’s too late and I’m immersed, or trapped, or—”
“I’m not trapping you. I don’t want anything for you but good things. Things you want. . . . Devlin wants to hurt you, Josh. I want to save you. I want you at peace and cared for.”
Josh said, “I want the bad made good.”
“What bad, Josh? Holy fuck.”
Josh did that hurting chuckle again, closing his eyes, and she knew what he would say before he said it, unsure how she would respond if he did. He opened his eyes again. “Kimmy, I know you fucked him.”
She blinked and stared as a bottomless chasm cracked open under her footing. She stood stunned and unsure; steady but swayed and wary. The room swam around her stillness.
Was it a trick? If she didn’t fight back, if she didn’t object, would Josh confirm her sins without having to listen to her lies? Was this Josh’s way of ferreting out the truth? Could Josh be so diabolical?
An unexpected calm eased her while what she dreaded most faced her down. They stared at each other like Hong Kong gunfighters. The statement hung in the air, a challenge; a binary blade of time that stretched on and on, yes or no, yes or no, but no answer was good enough. Confirmation or denial were lies or confirmed treachery. And yet the casual ability to obfuscate or to misdirect was played out and worn thin. The available options had attenuated to a single-file path where only truth could remain.
She said, “Did Devlin tell you that?”
Josh acted like he hadn’t heard her. “If you don’t hide it, then it’s for me. If you keep it hidden, it was always for you.”
“This isn’t a game anymore.”
Josh shook his head, and she saw a glimmer of contempt she wished she hadn’t. “I’m not sure it ever really was.”
“Then what was it?”
“I don’t know,” he said, frustrated, gesturing with harsh hand movements. “A charade, a, a play, or...”
“It’s all a game, Josh. We’re playing it.”
Josh looked at her, studying her. She didn’t shrink. “You love it, don’t you? That’s got to be it.”
“I love what?”
“Cruelty, torment. Humiliation.”
“I wouldn’t love it, Josh, if you didn’t love it, too.”
“You said you love it. You like the humiliation.”
“You grant it to me. Right? I don’t do it without your permission.”
“And that’s why we’re here. Mid work week, in a ritzy hotel-suite Devlin booked for some big-shot businessman. A place where you told me the terrible things that happened like they were no big deal. I’m granting you more and more. I grant you everything.”
“And I manifest everything,” she said, more harshly than she’d intended. She softened, touched her neck and looked away from Josh.
He said, “If I told you I love it, then do it for me. We both love it.”
She muttered, “Then there would be no sin at all,” and stared at the floor, seeing all she’d ever hoped for appear before her like in a dream; an escape route. It was all too good to be true, and she couldn’t believe Josh had offered it. Such a devilish temptation. An apple in supernal Eden. A trap.
She looked up and steadied her eyes on his. “This sounds like Devlin, not you.”
“Kimmy,” Josh said, extending his hands to her, looking tired. Like all this talking had run him ragged. “He’s not here. It’s just you and me. You and me alone in this hotel room we’ll never see again.”
“A hotel room you’re not even supposed to know about, Josh. How can you come in here and present all this to me?...”
“Kimmy,” he said again, still standing with his arms held out, encouraging her to come to him. “I want you back. I want you returned. I don’t like where we are.”
There was nothing in his eyes but honest need. Something happened then, a rolling wave enfolding her, Josh’s invitation doing something tremendous to her emotions. The way he stood, the stigmatic pose, the agonal gaze. His eyes throbbed with hurt, and he pleaded for salvation.
Her own eyes swelled with emotion, probably going just as pink as Josh’s were. She strode to him and plunged into his embrace. Josh folded his arms around her.
His voice was low and strained by emotion. “I want everything to be like it was. I want you back.”
Her chin was on his shoulder, eyes staring into the bedroom, at a bed she might sleep with Devlin on. Even though it was the last thing on her mind today, Josh wanted it. Needed it.
And she needed it, too.
Not the indulgent sexual pleasure Devlin provided, but some sort of perverted rapprochement for the man she loved. And had betrayed.
She said, “It can’t be the way it was, Josh.”
“Why not?” His voice now had thinned to a reedy croak.
She stepped back, dabbing at her eyes with the pads of her ring finger. “It’s not there anymore, Josh. We can’t be there anymore.” But before he interpreted her words as a cancellation, she continued, “I want us together. I want us tighter than ever. We’ve been dancing around each other. I’ve been afraid to tell you things and you’ve been afraid to tell me, too. Afraid to admit what you crave. Fully crave. Tell me your secrets. I’ll grant them. I’ll grant them in trade for your love. I want nothing more than for us to buy a house, for us to have a family”—she lay her hand on her chest—“that’s the only thing I think about these days.”
He said, “I don’t care about a house. I don’t care about material things. . . . But I want you... And I want a family, too.”
She pressed her lips together to prevent a broader smile from spreading across her face, the broad smile likely leading to a bubbly divulgence of what lay within her belly. The life that grew inside her was Josh’s.
She said, “But, Josh, nothing has changed. Nothing will have changed. I told you you had to trust me. I told you you had to let me figure this out.”
“Figure what out, though, Kimmy?”
“I’m talking about me and you.”
“You can’t figure us out only by yourself. You’re not going to consider me? That’s not fair. You know I consider you. If you consider me, then you have to listen.”
She tried to reason with him. “But when I listen, you say things like sin is penitence. Zero times anything is zero.”
“That’s it exactly. Zeroed. I’m offering a zeroing to you. But while I’m offering it, you need to know that I need it. I can’t go on without it.”
They stared at each other a foot apart. She reached for his hands and took them.
He said, “If I said you knew I wanted it before I did, would you understand?”
Her lips pursed into a dimpled, disbelieving line. “And the sin is the penitence.”
Josh said, “Zero times anything is zero.”
She dropped his hands and staggered away, putting her wrist to her brow like a Victorian lady seeking a fainting couch before imminent collapse. She laughed at herself then and went to the same window from where Josh had peered down onto the street below. Idle shoppers with idle lives walked the streets in busy fashion, upscale Torontonians darting from storefront to storefront, shopping bags packed with luxury goods. She chewed her cheek, then turned to face him again.
He was ready for her, saying, “If Devlin walked through that door, would you do it?”
“Take absolution.”
“Get absolution.”
Josh had defused so many of her arguments. There was no more she could say. No more schemes or lies to be spun from her devilish mouth. It hung agape and her eyes darted like they looked for an exit. But the exit was right before her, rolled out red-carpet style by the very man she wanted preserved. She said, “You know I only ever want the best for you.”
“Even when you sinned.”
She didn’t know how to respond. Josh didn’t want the truth. She would deliver it to him now, as hard as it might be, but his ears didn’t want to reconcile such heresy.
She said, “Is Devlin coming through that door?”
“If he does, what will you do?”
“Did you go to him last night?”
“I wouldn’t go to Devlin for the antidote to any poison. I’d rather die.”
Her shoulders relaxed and her posture slumped. She sagged, her knees supporting her weight, one hip shooting out. “You’re crazy, Josh. You’re so crazy.”
“And you drove me to it.”
“Don’t try to wound me,” she whispered.
Josh put up his hands, waist high, showing his palms. “I’m not trying to. Listen, Kimmy, I can’t go on the way it’s been. I can’t go on knowing unconfirmed truths. I want them wiped away. I want them wiped from my mind. Erased from the books. I want them to exist like they were mine—like they were always mine. That the things you did, you did for me and not for yourself.”
“I said don’t wound me. I would never in my life want to hurt you.”
Josh put up his hands again, left them there, speaking softly. “Sometimes I feel like I can’t breathe. I can’t think. You have me twisted in knots. And I know I like it. Or at least I think I like it. Or at least you think I like it.” His hands dropped to his sides.
“You do like it, Josh,” she said. “I wouldn’t do it if you didn’t like it.”
He turned away, but then turned back and stepped toward her. “That’s it. That’s what I want to hear. That’s what I need to hear—”
“But, Josh—”
“Kimmy, please.” He held her upper arms, adamant eyes on hers, firm but not strong, wavering, on the edge of defeat. “You don’t know how it’s been. The pain I’ve hidden from you.” He bit his lips, and she got the sense he was ready to cross a line he’d feared to cross, knowing he couldn’t go back to the other side once over it. “I followed you downtown. I followed you downtown to The Royal York one night and lurked and suffered and wondered what could be happening up in those luxury suites behind my back. You alone with Devlin up there.”
Her heart began thudding, imagining the ensuing pages of Josh’s surprising new story, one revealing a tale where he’d known her sins this whole time. “You did?”
His eyes dipped. “I felt small and like I didn’t matter and...”
When she squeezed her eyes shut, they leaked. Tears went down her face in quick rivers. “You matter more than anything.”
Josh could barely speak, his throat pinching his voice tight. “I always knew what you were doing, but I told myself it wasn’t true.”
She bit her own lips, preventing them from blubbering as more tears streamed. She touched his cheek, stroked it. Then she offered him his own escape. “That was part of our game.”
Josh answered in a rush. “It was, right?” His voice had cracked, his eyes bleary and pink. He was crying but keeping it together, his cheeks blooming red swatches.
She nodded, then opened her mouth to speak, but only a quiet, pained cry escaped, one she cut off, embarrassed by what it revealed.
Josh’s kiss came with sudden surprise, more welcome than any gesture she could remember. They kissed, and the more they kissed, the more she needed. Their abrupt connection, one that arrived in a moment where she felt lost with him, close but drifting apart, raced her heart. It came on a tender reed, the delicate and caring touch of his lips like an innocent but urgent request.
The request grew more heated when Josh sensed her desperate kisses in return. Her hands went to his neck, and Josh’s went to her waist. They staggered until her back touched the partition wall next to the archway between lounge and bedroom. She rubbed his warm neck, stroked his chest, grabbed the lapels of the tailored suit jacket she’d bought him. Their kissing didn’t stop. It grew more heated, their breaths scoring through their nostrils. Josh pressed his body against hers, pinning her to the wall. It was masculine and resolute, but still unassertive. His hard bulge pressed into her stomach, and it surprised her. But how would it surprise her? Shouldn’t she expect it? This was who Josh was. And it was proof of Josh’s determination. This was no longer some timid ruse where he cajoled her into playing along with the things that lurked in his shadows. He was done playing around the edges of the fire, and now he was sure he could walk barefoot through it, his hardened soles ready to brave the coals.
New love blossomed in her heart, bright green buds flowering in pale pink. With it came a soaring desire to please him. To reward him. To grant to him the things he feared he wanted.
And to do it would make him whole.
She grabbed his erection through his pants, and he tightened and groaned. She kissed him harder and Josh’s lips grew mushy as she controlled him with the grip she held on his stony member.
“I hate him, you know that,” she whispered, stroking her hand up and down, turned at an awkward angle. “I always have.”
“I want you to release me. Can you do that?”
“I’d do anything you asked, Josh.” The flat of her forehead rested against his, the tips of their noses eclipsing. “Do you love me?”
“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t love you.”
Josh could be here if he hated her. He could be here to do her harm. Here for revenge. Here to humiliate her in return. But Josh didn’t have malevolence in him. Josh didn’t think the way she thought. And that was why they were both here. She’d brought him here, hungry and wheedling for the dark things he craved. And offering salvation in exchange. It was the very same thing she’d sought all these last days and worried how she’d get it.
She saw him in a whole new way. Still the same man, but one buoyant with a strange honor, a strange perseverance. A true dedication to her. And she felt the same way for him, despite the bad she’d done. She’d never wanted her man to hurt. The moment Devlin shone his devilry Josh’s way, the game had changed.
So much wickedness arrived through her own hand, but Josh had imbibed it with a dark thirst. Had her badness come first, and Josh’s acceptance spoiled to some sort of rotten enjoyment just for the sake of survival?
She was sure that wasn’t it. Josh hadn’t adapted to her. She’d adapted to him.
In his eyes right now, she saw hope. And in those churning, hopeful waters swam murky shapes of the hurt she’d caused him. Josh never deserved any of it. Her hands went to his cheeks, and she kissed him once more, this time slow and tender.
When he spoke again, his voice was quiet. “Do it now, and it won’t matter if you’ve done it before. And I won’t ask you. The sin is penitence.”
She closed her eyes and touched her forehead to his again.
The sound of the room’s electronic door lock clacking was like a gunshot, and at once her stomach flinched and her chest tightened with dread. These were the sane responses.
A raunchy greed slithered down low, lusty snakes in concertinaed twists and coils. Familiar yet so unexpected. Welcome, but repudiated.
If this was Josh’s thirst, she would slake it.
They both turned to the opening door.

Kimmy's motive is perhaps extremely banal... she has had a merry-go-round on a strangely huge dick and then taken an intravenously delivered concoction named as a protocol by some unscrupulous copywriter... Could it be she is shamelessly sucking up to her supplier of big dick whilst under the influence of a range of possibly classified substances ?... And in later moments is it not said..." A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines..." And Kimmies who have been recently broken in by an unconscionable cocksman. That is, she has acquired a taste for cruelly mocking the husband she professes to love.

This enabled them to rebel against the Church and State which has reputedly always had the full backing of the Almighty... who says that human sacrifice is extinct? Just look at World Health Organization statistics... Although point taken... there is just a hint of disapproval in the simile. There is some evidence that forms of addiction have a genetic predisposition... Which doesn't mean I don't savour the delicious irony of your acute observation.

2023-12-01 15:00:41 +0000 UTCThis is why KT is a brilliant author... I call it ad hoc realism... it's insight into the way we think... the way we behave... the unreliable narrator is only the beginning... Lots of people think "in other words" isn't quicksand... also the nature of the meaning of words is often twisting one idea into another... KT is a daring adventurer... and she respects us enough not to swing language like a hammer... unless we deserve or crave it. What's wrong with me, why can't I just say... a canny interpretation on your part... and amusing to boot! But I do like extras, they flesh out things , and remind you you're not waiting for Godot. Also they make the word normal appear useful... and draw our attention to the "eccentrics."

2023-12-01 14:38:30 +0000 UTCThis classic novel is best when it centers on the tortuous relationship between Josh and Kimmy, with Devlin as Kimmy’s weapon. When he says: “Do it now, and it won’t matter if you’ve done it before. And I won’t ask you. The sin is penitence.” He’s giving her permission. To both feed his masochism by confirming that Josh was right all along, BUT “I won’t ask again,” is like an alcoholic saying “I’m done drinking. I promise.” Josh needs the torment of doubt that Kimmy gives him.

2023-11-30 16:02:54 +0000 UTCKimmy is such a great portrait of someone who does get off on the humiliation, of wielding power over another person (that she purportedly loves), without thinking that she does. She does the cruel, humiliating thing, then she gets off on it, they're connected temporally in her actions but not as cause and effect in her mind, so she maintains her psychological plausible deniability to not really think of herself as a bad/selfish person.

2023-11-30 09:11:06 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure Kimmy said the thing about them having had a good thing to rub it in Devlin's face that she was pulling down the shutters... Everything is contextual with KT, as we can see throughout this magnificent tour de force she just presented us with... DITW is subtle... all of the Dragon Lady's work is good, most of it is masterful and a goodly part excels, but their is a part that ranks with the best works I've read... and I've read a book or two. The dragon lady thing is, in part, the Nietzsche thing about being careful when you struggle with monsters which is such a recurrent theme throughout her work... dragon is one of the main translations of the word N used.

2023-11-30 09:01:24 +0000 UTCIf it is Devlin walking through the door, I don’t think he’ll be the one to inflict the damage on Josh. He’ll just be Devlin and give Josh what he thinks Josh wants and indeed what Josh might think he wants. It’ll be the way Josh sees Kimmy with Devlin that will kill him and if Josh can’t handle the reality then this will be Kimmy’s Penance as she will see that she cannot have what she has with Devlin and keep Josh as well. She’s already told Josh that there’s no going back and the faint hope that they could go forward together, maybe dashed in the end it’s Kimmy who is the devil in the waters not Devlin. Having said that while we do blame Kimmy, you can understand her actions: unresolved sexual issue with Devlin from high school. He’s hot, is wealthy. He is connected other than love gives her everything that she was hoping she could be, the only thing missing is love, which she got from Josh. Weather Josh can handle the truth and forgive, and they proceeded together is unlikely, but time will tell. What I would really like to see is more of a burn the bitch scenario with the private eye coming in and proving to Kimmy how much Josh really knows and in fact, she has been doing this for herself all along and only tried to involve Josh when she realised the opportunity. However, I don’t see this to be a realistic probability.

2023-11-30 07:16:15 +0000 UTCYeah I think this pretty much sums up where I’m at in my assessment of Kimmy. Josh thinks, or at least is pretending to think, if they are openly in this together, they will be okay. I suspect that’s like two heroin addicts leaning on each other to control their addictions. Not gonna work. Yes. Kimmy after the incident, really hates Devlin, it’s not just pretend anymore, but she’s going to fuck him anyway. She might even enjoy it even more now. I suspect she has a better sense of what’s about to happen. They will now have a new marriage with a new Kimmy and new Josh and the same old Devlin smack in the middle of it. I think the smart play here now is for Devlin to be more subtle with Josh and have Kimmy ramp up the humiliation. That binds them together, gives them the impression it’s still a game, and allows the illusion of control. But I suspect that Devlin will not be content with Kimmy dominating Josh. He will want to do it himself. And though I believe Josh also has a deep seated desire for that, Kimmy apparently does not. That will be a point of conflict. Would be funny if it were the maid entering the room, after all this. Disappointing but funny.

2023-11-30 03:39:37 +0000 UTCOh, I think you are 100% right that her reluctance is due to what he started with Josh. She warned him multiple times what her red line was. Otherwise, shed still be having biweekly hook ups with him. Which I think is what most peoples point is. She still enjoys the thought of having sex with him. She still wants him. It's just heavily offset by how much she detests him for going against her wishes and hurting Josh. CSH has pointed out already that she she called what she and Devlin had a "good thing". She loved having sex with Devlin, for multiple reasons. None of them were enough to overshadow or draw her back, though, because ultimately, screwed up as she is, I do believe her when she says she loves Josh. And Devlin damaged their marriage horribly. (Techically Kimmy did, but Kimmy would still rather foist off most of that blame onto Devlin). Plus, his actions showed her just how untrustworthy he was. She never fully trusted him, but she had enough to overcome her hesitancy to have an affair. All that is gone, now. So I think her reluctance is two fold. 1. She hates that asshole for all the pain he's caused her and Josh for blowing their marriage up. 2. She's worried about Devlin using her to hurt Josh. The first one is still there, but Josh's absolution and salvation play has mitigated it enough to where she'll overlook it because the pain is worth the gain. The 2nd is still in play, but I'm hypothesizing that she thinks she can manage it well enough to give Josh what he wants without it being so overbearingly awful that he walks away from her in disgust. That last bit is where most of us think both Josh and Kimmy have screwed up. Devlin is going to eat them alive.
L_S87
2023-11-30 03:38:51 +0000 UTCIt's as though the last two books have been erased... does nobody consider it possible that Kimmy is reluctant to fuck Devlin because he crossed the line... and her hatred of him has overtaken her addicktion... she's not some bloodsucking fiend courtesy of Bram Stoker, she's a person... fickle and unsure behind the masks that made us "persons." And what are these designs she has on Hyun that are so effin' melodramatic? Hyun has tamed her own melodramas... isn't that why Kimmy is drawn to her... that and a potential bulwark against her big bad boss, the snake in the grass... Perhaps even big bad Kimmy is afraid to find herself exiled... alone, with nothing to wear but a scarlet letter... She'll need Hyun to go shopping with. So she treacherously denigrated Josh to ingratiate herself with Devlin... but probably he too was advised at an early age that sticks and stones will break your bones but names will never hurt you... which has surely been a consolation unto us all.
Bill F Protagoras
2023-11-30 01:24:55 +0000 UTCAnd we know Kimmy does not love Devlin. She just loves his dick! After a while she would probably get bored with it. Kimmy would crave Josh's emotional love. But she would have driven him away. Fitting Karma.
Andrew Mellein
2023-11-30 00:53:33 +0000 UTCThere is a lot of double standard for Kimmy... just as there is an insistence on comparing the degree of blame between her and Josh when the real fly in the ointment is Devlin... he's a wrong'un if ever there was one,
Bill F Protagoras
2023-11-30 00:19:52 +0000 UTCWhy didn't you just say this the first time! (KIDDING!) This is very perceptive and true in regards to Kimmy's self deception and Josh's conflicting emotions. The scenario he's cooked up is objectively ludicrous, but given his desires, all of them (both Devlin and marriage related) I can see how he would talk himself into this. I just don't see Josh as someone who wants permanent domination of his life and marriage by Devlin. He hates the man too much, and has pushed back too often on even the lightest of scenarios in regards to Devlin for me to see that as a viable outcome. I do think it's what Devlin wants, and I think there's a part of both Kimmy and Josh that would crave that, but only in certain moments. Kimmy has enough insight due to what she's hidden from Josh to know how this is likely going to go, at least in the hotel room, which is why she tried very hard to convince Josh to divert from this. But I think most of that is because she thinks it will end their marriage. Josh has done enough lobbying to convince her that this isn't the case, so now she's embracing it because her twisted desires love the thought of what is about to happen, as long as losing Josh is off the table. Ultimately, we'll have to wait to see what KT has in store for us. I do think you have one thing wrong. Not everyone in Summer Swap is well adjusted! There's a bit of DITW in there because Chey isn't Josh and Kimmy levels of dysfunctional, but she's trying damn hard at it!

2023-11-29 23:16:14 +0000 UTCWell, I’ve made it pretty clear I think Josh is worse than Kimmy in some ways. Even now he claims he doesn’t want the truth but he wants to punish her for not telling him the truth.
CSH
2023-11-29 23:12:42 +0000 UTCI think most of us would see that as Devlin "winning" and would dislike that asshole getting such a "reward". But. You're right. Kimmy having to live with Devlin for any extended period of time would be a significant punishment. Especially given what it would mean for her and Josh's relationship and Devlin's part in destroying it. I don't know if I would call that "enough" with everything she's done, but it would probably be hellish for her.
L_S87
2023-11-29 23:10:45 +0000 UTCI do not see things this way. I do not see she had done things "to" Josh and even less things that "deserve" punishment. She is just a human being dragged by the current and riped apart between lust and love, ambition and home loving. I see a certain misogynist nuance in the idea that Kimmy must be the one "doing the right things" against all odds and that not doing so is doing bad things "to Josh" as if Josh were her moral guardian.

And I'm sure she can do something similar here, but people seem to be pushing for what Wilde mocked in Miss Prism, knowing what people deserved and giving them it... and look where Victorian karma got Oscar Wilde for being so outrageous. They broke a butterfly on a wheel... but that's the fiction because he was a sleepy tiger... I originally didn't join Patreon because I don't want to tell KT how to write, but Amazon's arbitrary censorship left me with nowhere else I wanted to go...sorry a storm in a tea cup!

2023-11-29 22:35:50 +0000 UTC@CSH that’s one of the parts of this story that I think is going to come back to bite Kimmy (no pun intended 😂). I can totally see Devlin bringing that up in the hotel taunting Josh with it. Kimmy loved it, but she only loved it because Josh didn’t know. It was her secret with Devlin.
Kat
2023-11-29 22:32:40 +0000 UTCI have no real preference for the ending I just want it to be believable like Cherry Blossoms, some terrible things were done and experienced in the story, and hinted at in Nia's early life, but her and Geoff misunderstood each other so many times that things got unbearably sad yet KT managed to steer us into sight of a believable

2023-11-29 22:29:30 +0000 UTC@L_S87 “There is no preparation possible for how bad I think Devlin will try to make this. Worse how much Kimmy will thrive while it's happening.” This exactly. He may have a plan, and he may even be ready for Devlin’s cruel and immaculating words, but he’s going to be gutted when the real Kimmy shows up. Her reactions to Devlin alone will be devastating, but her wickedness will do him in.
Kat
2023-11-29 22:24:55 +0000 UTC@Tracey52 you are right! Remember when we thought it was Devlin coming into the apartment when Kimmy was in his bed with her dildo? I think it turned out to be a maid or something, but it wasn’t Devlin. I agree, though with @L_S87 that it’s most likely Devlin. It’s what makes sense. It seems that the whole story has been leading to this moment, too. Even if it is him, I’m sure that KT has something equal parts thrilling and gut wrenching for us to read.

2023-11-29 22:19:12 +0000 UTCSo you prefer they split up to her getting to regularly screw Devlin? For me the most likely ending is Kimmy with Devlin, completely cut off from all Josh’s crew and Hyun. Josh goes down the rabbit hole of watching, then realizes he is breaking himself and leaves. Not my preferred ending but for me the most logical outcome.

2023-11-29 21:57:57 +0000 UTCI think that in the text is clear that she is sexually stimulated by the transgression of humiliating Josh. She loves him so she does not do on his face. But lets see what happens if Devlin tempts her in the middle of a sexual situation. It is clear Josh is sexually excited by psychological pain so in the middle of the sexual frenzy perhaps he also pushes her to humiliate him. The problem would be afterwards, when everybody is sexually exhausted and look backwards. Then will be the turning point.
Rocambole50
2023-11-29 21:40:49 +0000 UTCOr maybe she just gets off on it? Remember when she “made him eat it” after that first time, then called Devlin to tell him? I think it was her being a willing acolyte for Devlin, learning to enjoy being a sadist to her masochistic husband. I suspect we will now see how much she gets off on it. I bet she is crueler to Josh than Devlin is.

2023-11-29 21:30:34 +0000 UTCIndeed! Kimmy deserves karma for what she did to Josh and what she’s going to do to Hyun! Anything else I will be disappointed. It depends on what happens but I think Hyun is going to be the one to do in her marriage with what she reveals to Josh!

Kat
2023-11-29 21:11:11 +0000 UTCI respect we have different desires for the outcomes here. I actually think we agree on Josh’s mixed motives. I would caution that one should never assume that what either Josh or Kimmy say is the truth either objectively or even subjectively. Part of what KT is throwing at us is that both characters are deeply unreliable narrators. Both lie to themselves and each other. Kimmy lies to herself about her perception of Devlin. Josh has spent the whole series lying to himself. Josh has “said” any number of things. So has Kimmy. They make affirmative statements and then act in ways totally inconsistent with those statements. On one level, Devlin is the most honest character in the books, because he’s a shitheel and he knows it. Another point she is making is that even when honest with themselves they are both acting in compulsive ways that are not in their objective best interests. Kimmy with Hyung is one example. Here we have another with Josh. If any rational human male wanted to rectify his marriage, it takes honest conversation and a marriage counselor, and maybe, maybe, that opens the door to better communication and healing. If Josh was a normal person, they would have this conversation in the hotel room, go home, get a counselor, kimmy would quit her job, and Josh would go into therapy. Well, thank god, this is an erotic story, and Josh, in it, is compelled to act in self-destructive ways. He is trying to get a handle on his obsession and save his marriage to the love of his life, yes - but my point is that he wants to also keep his thrilling game of cuckold humiliation. Kimmy is trying to warn him against it, but deep down, she wants it as much as he does. Josh wants to have his cake and eat it, too. Josh’s solution for saving his marriage is - I’ll watch my worst enemy screw my wife. That will fix things. - no Josh, usually, usually mind you, it won’t. However much Josh says he’s got a rational plan, judged objectively, he does not. What he has is an excuse to really get his rocks off watching his wife. ( Grant you there may be some hidden plan to spy on Devlin but even so - watching Kimmy and Devlin together is totally unnecessary for that.) I believe a big part of what KT always runs into in her books are that these couples are compelled to go down paths that lead them, quite logically, to some very dark and self destructive outcomes. This is not Summer Swap. They are not responsible adults playing sex games. They NEVER really talk and agree and play safe, or have safe words. They never really communicate. They get lost in the sex and the compulsion. They always cross boundaries and the results are always painful. In this way they are highly realistic warnings about inexperienced couples experimenting with their darkest desires and then getting burned. As for who comes in the door, of course I have my preferences and I’ll take what comes but for me, this late in the day, if it’s not Devlin, then, really, what has been the point of all this?
CSH
2023-11-29 21:03:35 +0000 UTCAstute point, Tracey. I've gone back and forth on that one. Part of me feels that this discussion Josh forced, and what he's demanded from Kimmy means it MUST be Devlin, how else, why else, would Josh be here? How would he know? (as Kimmy pointed out) Why would he make this ask here, where Kimmy has already done wrong and where Devlin is scheduled to be, if not for this to be the moment and for that to be who walks through the door? The hotel is the perfect place for this. It's neutral ground. A room he never has to see again once the deed is done. But. BUT. This is KT. Sometimes it's just that simple, and sometimes she likes to surprise the shit out of us. Hopefully we find out soon.

2023-11-29 20:20:24 +0000 UTCI get the reference Orpheus as he went into the underworld to try a retrieve her. Obvious enough. But Doesn’t Orpheus’s wife die and he is left morning for her. Is this where we’re going metaphorically? I could live with that ending but not with Kimmy becoming a hotwife.

2023-11-29 20:13:10 +0000 UTCI think there is a lot of accuracy in stating Josh is taking this path because he's succumbing to his inner demons and desires. He could have chosen a lot of different ways to make this happen, but he chose this, ultimately because he wants it. But just because that is A motive, doesn't mean it is the ONLY motive. Josh has put a lot of effort into this. A lot of his heart and soul into this conversation with Kimmy. If he'd just wanted to watch Devlin and Kimmy fuck, then that could have been arranged much easier than this. Without all the discussions, manipulation, talking down to Kimmy and twisting her up. I'm almost positive he has a plan for what comes after. I just think that plan is probably going to have to change. No plan survives first contact with the enemy in battle. This is definitely a war and Devlin is clearly the enemy. I even think Josh knows this. His darkness gets off on Kimmy enjoying the enemy, gets off on Kimmy enjoying humiliating him with said enemy. Josh knows this, thinks he's ready for it, but Josh doesn't know what he doesn't know. There is no preparation possible for how bad I think Devlin will try to make this. Worse how much Kimmy will thrive while it's happening. Josh probably thinks Kimmy will go easy on him because he'll be there. She keeps saying she loves him, he comes first, but I can't shake thinking that won't happen because Kimmy has proven time and again, when she's in these moments, HER desires and needs come first, always. Hence the lies, Hyun and 11 books of torment.

2023-11-29 19:52:04 +0000 UTCI think maybe Kimmy bad mouths her husband to please and tickle her lover's fancy and to vent her spite on Josh's cluelessness and weakness which permits her to do what she is ashamed of... thereby chastising and condemning Josh as her scapegoat and herself as a scapegrace... and in turn makes her lover make her come so hard it hurts. Or maybe she just thinks it's how you bond with a man who loathes and despises your spouse yet really puts you through your paces and, sadly, satisfies you like Josh never could... maybe...
Bill F Protagoras
2023-11-29 19:44:54 +0000 UTCI think it's important to note, that while accurate, your take missed a really big, and important, point. Josh isn't just here to "slake his thirst" as Kimmy put it. He's also here, misguided as it may be, to try to rectify things in his marriage and also has made it clear he has zero interest in Devlin owning either of them. Yes, that assumes Devlin will let that happen, we all know he won't, he's got something else in mind that will probably destroy Josh's ego, but it's not as if Josh walked into this with a myopic focus on getting off to Devlin fucking Kimmy's brains out. There's a lot more going on here than just that request, even if it overshadows everything else in the moment because Kimmy is already getting revved up at where she thinks this will go and how much she knows she's going to love experiencing Josh get his wish. At the end of it, we're all seeing this differently and interpreting what is said in hopes it will end up the way we want it, hence your view point being different from mine or anyone else posting here. It will be very interesting to see who walks through that door and what happens next.

2023-11-29 19:03:17 +0000 UTCI am all for Donkatsu's iceberg metaphor, I remember the drawn out ad hoc realism of "Cherry Blossoms, " and most of KT's other novels and shorter works do not come to a brusque end... and I think there are only two I haven't read... so things can take the time she needs, and if she thinks it were best that things are best done quickly I would not gainsay her... I like good endings but that doesn't require that things end well...

2023-11-29 19:00:50 +0000 UTCOvation. This is how things are in real live. Nobody knows if his/her own feelings are spontaneous or induced by his/her own need or induced by third parties manipulation. Just feelings are there. Kimmy wants sex with Devlin and Josh wants to see. How much these symmetrical wills are aimed to come clean of the quagmire, how much driven by pure lust, and how much are morbid self-destructive Thanatos kind-of-thing, is to the reader to decide. Perhaps Josh is strong enough to survive and perhaps Kimmy continues loving him after this. What is true is that contrary to real life, a written fiction needs to reach a climax and finish at some point. So everything pushes to a grand finale whatever it is. I must say that I like dark and bitter endings for the beta male, but KT Morrison characters are so warm-hearted and good-natured that we must not rule out a more benign fate for good old Josh.

2023-11-29 16:50:35 +0000 UTCTo be fair, Josh first used Devlin as a pick me up because he thought that Kimmy was hiding something dastardly that had happened at Tiffany's... as far as we know!

But even if she did do it for her... hasn't Josh also been doing it for her... but now he has given up being the great pretender by facing the beast from the tent... Would the Life with Devlin be any kind of life worth living? Does he feel anything worthy of respect for Kimmy?

2023-11-29 16:19:49 +0000 UTCYes, Josh is certainly not without responsibility (sin?) for the fix they're in... and the childish excuse she did it first would be pathetic... but to his credit Josh has never stooped to it... 2023-11-29 15:47:06 +0000 UTCI am not an apologist for Kimmy’s actions but our assessment of Kimmy and Josh needs to be balanced here. Kimmy did lots and lots of evil shit. But Josh liked a lot of it. He liked it so much, it floated his boat so high, he just couldn’t walk away from it. He’s insisting to get more of that sweet, sweet pain he loves so much. He’s no innocent here. He’s only now coming out as his own special brand of masochistic manipulator. And Kimmy warned him here, she told him, he doesn’t really know what he’s asking for. She does, and he doesn’t. Not really. So Kimmy will be Devlin’s and Josh will be Devlin’s too. And for those of you crying “ oh no, not Devlin! Anyone but Devlin!” Remember - it always had to be Devlin. This was a big part of Josh’s obsession. Not watching Kimmy with another guy ( he’s never even brought up the possibility) no - Josh wants to watch his worst tormentor humiliate him by breaking his woman in front of him. It always had to be Devlin. I do think Josh embracing this will make him stronger in a way. I suspect he may have a plan. But he will pay a price, boy will he pay.

2023-11-29 14:16:36 +0000 UTCThis is a great point and something I had been pondering. I think Josh's statement about her hiding it means it's for her is an admission, along with his bold statement that he knows she fucked Devlin, that he knows she's lying about everything and that she did it for herself, not him. He just doesn't know why. So maybe this request is multifaceted. It's to balance the scales where she finally does it for him, at his behest, not her own, while also providing an opportunity to see how she interacts with Devlin to peel back the veil on why she started this. What about Devlin attracted her so much that she would step out, then torment Josh with it afterwards and keep going back for more, escalating events every single time. I feel like his divulgence of the Royal York incident points to this because he's basically saying "I know that was the first time you cheated, and it almost killed me because it was before the game." He's basically putting out there that it could have only ever been for her. Yet he gives her an out with the 'you knew what I wanted before I did" statement. This whole scenario is basically setup, I think, to be an out for Kimmy. Because as dumb as Josh probably feels it may make him, he still wants her, and he wants the closeness they had before all this started. Kimmy is smart in saying they can't go back, but clarifying they can use this to grow closer, stronger. It gives her the ability to keep doing wrong, scratching that itch, because it's part of her now, while using it as leverage to keep their marriage intact because Josh is saying he knows how awful she is yet still wants her. Problem being, he DOESN'T know how awful she is, because she's still hiding her most egregious sins.
L_S87
2023-11-29 12:13:08 +0000 UTCMany of us have noted that there is still no accounting for Kimmy's repeated badmouthing and derisive comments about Josh to Devlin while they are having sex. Indeed, while Devlin's motives for demeaning Josh are obvious, Kimmy's are not so clear, even if they are worse than Devlin's in most respects and totally unnecessary to the sex aspect of her cheating (except, of course, that Kimmy gets off on insulting Josh, but does not have the courage to do it to his face). In KT's moral universe this is an unpardonable sin; just ask Nia or Jess. Clearly, any understanding that Kimmy has repeatedly demeaned him to Devlin while in the throes of sex will devastate Josh. Overcoming her participation in these conversations with Devlin, rather than the sex seems to me to be Kimmy's biggest obstacle to any meaningful reconciliation with Josh. It would certainly not be beneath Devlin to have recordings of some of those conversations. I still cannot really believe that Kimmy wants to put the cart before the horse as a rationale for her affair with Devlin. Justifying the lifestyle has to be a part of her mental process here. She really does not want to give up the "Life" with Devlin. There may still be a few icebergs ahead.

2023-11-29 11:26:26 +0000 UTCJosh clearly has a motive deeper than say ten hail Mary's and nibble a wafer and imbibe our saviour's blood... just because he plays his cards close to the chest doesn't make him weak... anymore than the fact that up to now "his compliment extern does not match the inward action of his heart" makes him Iago. Though having him inject Devlin with the green monster and then strangle Kimmy, and after having Devlin top himself from grief would be quite the finish! I loved how J did his big reveal that he "knew" the elephant was in the room all along... you've got to admire his panache! There is a theory that the human brain evolved so the males and females whose sexual attributes were not as glaring obvious as yer Kimmys and Devlins would get a 'go' too...

2023-11-29 10:35:59 +0000 UTCI agree... not Josh's kink... as even Kimmy herself suspects in a piece of rhetorical insight above..."Had her badness come first, and Josh’s acceptance spoiled to some sort of rotten enjoyment just for the sake of survival? She was sure that wasn’t it. Josh hadn’t adapted to her. She’d adapted to him." That's Kimmy's own survival method to escape the ignominious truth that she might be the cause of the plight they find themselves in...

It led me to write my first review of DITW and compare her (favourably) to a bipolar bonobo... but even then as now I had faith that in the end KT would know how best to roast my chestnuts. Kimmy has the right to fuck who she wants... but fucking people over is a different kettle of bananas. But change, as Heraclitus fragmented, is the waters that run through us... Kimmy has changed... though her feints at deception, and her obvious self-deception do stretch even the credulity of an avid fan... but love over gold and Josh over the Devlin.

2023-11-29 07:16:52 +0000 UTC@L_S87 KT has to be holding something back. There’s no way Josh is just going to do it this way without having something else in place. Why else would she bring up a PI more than once in the earlier chapters? Maybe I’m wrong, and he’s just succumbing to his weakness and dark fantasy. Kimmy’s been manipulating him for months, and he’s been losing his mind for so long. We know Kimmy has no self control when she’s doing something that makes her feel bad and sinful. She’s definitely going to lose control of her body and her words once Devlin gets her going. He’s barely even entered the room, and she’s already feeling the excitement. “A raunchy greed slithered down low, lusty snakes in concertinaed twists and coils. Familiar yet so unexpected. Welcome, but repudiated. If this was Josh’s thirst, she would slake it.” Josh has no idea what he’s in for. I don’t think he’s going to be able to look at her the same after this. She still wants Devlin. She tells Josh that she hates him, but I really don’t believe that she does. Hyun was just a substitute for Devlin. If given a choice she would pick Devlin every time. After this is over, is Kimmy going to keep working for Devlin? How does Josh think this is going to end. They are turning over their power to him, and he’s going to obliterate them. I’m sure his plan involves destroying what’s left of Josh’s psyche. He has this obsession with Josh, and it gets him off to torment him. He also wants Kimmy for himself. I don’t think he’ll succeed with that since Kimmy claims that she hates him so much, but he’ll destroy her in other ways. She’s going to lose Josh, and probably lose Hyun, too, after all of this gets out. No one is going to want to be there to help her raise Devlin’s baby. Omg, I’m dying for the next chapter.

2023-11-29 06:05:35 +0000 UTCYeah, I'm almost positive he has a plan. Josh, that is. But. I'm also positive Devlin has a plan, too. I think that Josh feels he can use Devlin to get what he wants from Kimmy and then make him go away. That's really the only way this works. Its a one shot deal to get it out of his system (as he stated) and then to move forward Devlin has to be removed from the equation. Otherwise he's always there to interfere, disrupt, destroy. No matter what Josh says here, there is no absolution if this moment of "clarity" he's setup leads into another round of lying and cheating due to Devlin's close proximity and Kimmy's obvious weakness. Removing Devlin removes the weakness. (Or so Josh would think, since he doesn't know about Kimmy replacing Devlin with Hyun to get her "fix") Which makes me feel like Josh thinks he has a way to make Devlin go away. How? Don't know. But his comment about Devlin being poison and never going to him makes me think he feels like he's in control. Thus, a plan. Ultimately, it probably won't matter, because I think once Devlin gets Kimmy going, she's going to do exactly what you alluded to, Kat. She's going to get lost in the moment, just like she always has before, and she's going to humiliate Josh in a way he's not expecting, and Devlin's going to feed off that and make it even worse. No matter what Josh has envisioned, I don't think it includes some of the awful things Kimmy has said, nor how she's reacted to Devlin. If that Kimmy resurfaces in this moment, I'm not sure Josh will be able to handle it. In the moment, sure, but after the fact when he's had time to ponder what he saw and how Kimmy loves being with Devlin more than she ever has with him? And then afterwards tell him she's pregnant? No amount of "absolution" is going to make that "okay".

2023-11-29 03:22:11 +0000 UTCFor me Josh seemed weak in this chapter! So Kimmy has sex with Devlin and all is forgiven! No thanks! All her past lies and sexual secrets will be put to rest and wiped clean. I didn't buy the reconciliation they had. I also don't understand why Josh would be willing to watch Kimmy screw his High School bully. A man he hates and cant stand. I don't understand why he didn't hire that private investigator to look into Kimmy! I still feel Hyun is going to be the one to tumble the dominoes of Josh and Kimmy's marriage! Gripes aside this was a well written chapter! Cant wait for the next one with Devlin!

2023-11-29 02:24:52 +0000 UTCEverything you said here is right. I was thinking the same thing when Josh brought up the Royal York. Kimmy has her chance to confess it all, but she’s still keeping things from him, gaslighting and lying to him. She can’t be honest because she never did any of it for Josh. She was able to craft it so that she could believe it was a game for him, but what she’s left out was that the game was all too real. She also had to involve Hyun, which may very well be the thing that breaks them up forever. She can never let Josh know about that. Towards the end of the chapter they seem to be more together than they have been in ages, but just when they get to that point they’re going to wreck it all by choosing to involve Devlin, a man who wants nothing more than to hurt and humiliate for his own enjoyment. I just can’t grasp Josh’s thought process here. He hates Devlin passionately and does not trust him at all. How does he think he can sit there and watch him have sex with his wife, and walk away unscathed? He’s allowing this. He says this to Kimmy, “I wouldn’t go to Devlin for the antidote to any poison. I’d rather die.” But, then he’s doing something even worse. He is using Devlin as the antidote to the poison inside of himself. I don’t get how he thinks this is the answer. I’m dying to find out, though.

2023-11-29 02:17:07 +0000 UTC100% Devlin is going to wreck them both. He’s not going to just come in and do the deed with Kimmy and leave. He’s going to unleash some terrible torture on Josh. He has to, he’s Devlin. I wonder if he’ll come clean with Josh and admit that it was him in the tent in the first chapter, and that he and Kimmy started their affair right there that night while he was passed out. That everything Josh has imagined this whole time was true, except so much worse. How is Kimmy going to be her very wicked self with Devlin in front of Josh? Will she mock him, too? Devlin likes Kimmy a certain way, or a certain faction of her that Josh has only seen a bit of. She’s been really awful to him behind his back, and said terrible things about him to Devlin when they’ve been together, because it turns her on. Josh likes being humiliated by her, but he’s not going to like hearing some of the stuff she’s said about him to Devlin, especially in front of Devlin. I hope Josh has a bigger plan here, because the way it’s going it’s going to get ugly fast for him.

2023-11-29 01:49:26 +0000 UTCWow. Spectacular. The dialogue here is awesome. As much as I find the whole "Telling me hurts to much but showing is fine" thread to be, well.... dumb, this is just amazingly written. “If you don’t hide it, then it’s for me. If you keep it hidden, it was always for you.” That was pure golden truth. And Kimmy knows it. Sadly, as poignant as their moment is when the reach some semblance of a reconciliation near the end of the chapter, that golden statement still looms large, because there is still so much Josh doesn't know. So much Kimmy is hiding. He tells her the truth of what he did at the Royal York, but she can't, won't, reciprocate. Because it would destroy the salvation that's finally within reach. She can say all she wants that this was all about Josh, but it wasn't, it never was. It was all about her, and no amount of revisionist history will change that. Why? Josh's golden statement. She hid it because it was for her. She can lie to herself and say Josh wanted it first and that's why she did it, but that's bull shit, because again, She hid it all. And so here we are, a pathway to absolution, paved with lies, reliant on a man who she hates, Josh hates, and who wants to wreck them both, physically and emotionally. And this is the solution to all that ails them? Right. And lest we forget, even if this somehow miraculously works, Kimmy's newest sins are still hidden. How do you wipe the slate clean when some of your most egregious sins aren't even listed? Hyun and the baby spell disaster, regardless of how this turns out.

2023-11-29 01:22:08 +0000 UTCSo, SO right, Kat. Through all the muck and mire, they've somehow found a happy place, an understanding. Granted, a lot of it is still based on lies and deception Kimmy continues to allow to exist, but it's a connection they've not had for many many books. Josh is finally telling her his truth, and Kimmy has found a way to get what she wants. A way back into Josh's good graces, which is what she's been angling for all along since Devlin (actually Kimmy) screwed things up while also getting the other thing she wants out of this. Permission. Approval. And yet, all of this relies on the most unreliable source, ever. Devlin. Trusting him to just fuck Kimmy and then walk away is ludicrous. I'm almost positive Josh has a plan. But it still relies on Devlin not taking this moment and blowing it up by revealing things that Kimmy still wants to keep secret, things that will break Josh. Because no matter how sweet those final moments were in this chapter, Josh is still missing a large chunk of the picture. A picture Devlin will happily paint for him.

2023-11-29 01:05:29 +0000 UTCMaybe, it's Josh's PI coming through the door. Nice thought but not likely.

2023-11-29 00:14:43 +0000 UTCShe said, “It can’t be the way it was, Josh.” “Why not?” His voice now had thinned to a reedy croak. She stepped back, dabbing at her eyes with the pads of her ring finger. “It’s not there anymore, Josh. We can’t be there anymore.” Will the next chapter be titled “Heraclitus”? (Cannot step in the same river twice) Seems to me Kimmy is still hoping she can gain absolution through gaslighting. In at least part of this chapter she holds on to the idea that she did it for Josh, his ideas were the genesis, and it is only his continued enjoyment that keeps her at it with Devlin. Nah, I don’t think she believes that, either.

2023-11-29 00:14:06 +0000 UTCSo the brain washing is complete. Josh let Delvin twist him up. .to me reminiscent of Anakin manipulation by the Emperor and then turning dark. We know how this turned out .. Disaster ahead for Kimmy and Josh...Nothing will be the same again...as the saying goes ..be careful what you ask for.. I don't believe this will go down the way Josh . Thinks it will!...I don't believe he asked for this at all...I don't Believe this is his kink ..I believe he has been expertly manipulated to this point . Possibly both have at some level. I believe the second Devlin behind the scenes has yet to be shown(Aimee possibly???) It a tangled web that was weaved . This has been crafted since HS as a unresolved itch that had to be scratched.. No escape for anyone!

2023-11-29 00:08:38 +0000 UTCAnd so it begins. I don’t think this is going to turn out well for either of them. Josh is going to be destroyed. He may think he needs to see this, but it’s not going to go the way he wants. Neither of them have considered Devlin’s motivations and actions. Josh and Kimmy act like he’s just some stunt dick. He’s going to make it so bad for Josh. How can he not know this? And for Kimmy, when Hyun finds out about this, things will get much worse for her. Hyun could even tell Josh that Kimmy isn’t sure whose baby she’s carrying. That was awesome, though, KT, where you had Josh tell Kimmy about following her to the Royal York. I freaked out when I read that!
