DITW 13-5: Reckoning

Devlin reared back and lounged in the chair once more, clapping a hand over his bare chest. “Agh . . . You got me,” he said, smirking the whole while.

Josh raised his hand to his mouth and blew imaginary smoke from the index barrel of his finger pistol, then holstered it back into his pocket. His eyes were long gone, beyond troubled, somewhere past forlorn. But he smirked, too, saying to Devlin, “Some day you will get yours.”

Devlin raised his eyebrows. “I think I ‘got mine’ today, Josh.” Totally naked, totally unabashed, lounging in the padded chair after she’d been dumb enough to fuck him in front of her husband. Penitence.

Josh’s expression right now stole away all the hope and promises he’d offered an hour ago, the two of the alone in the room. She understood, but hated him for it. Betrayal came in many forms. Josh’s sickly face tightened from loose and lost to firm resignation. He was done here—and she couldn’t blame him for that. He said, “You two think you’re so smart, so great. You think you’re better than everyone else.”

Devlin’s eyebrows twisted and he looked her way. She didn’t meet his gaze, didn’t want to be associated with him right now. “That’s not true,” she said, voice submissive, even nodding her chin down, eyes drifting to the floor.

“You cheated on me. You plotted behind my back.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

Even Devlin said, “It wasn’t like that.”

#

It was astounding that Devlin believed he could change gears, and trusting Josh would believe him, trust him all over again.

Agreeableness had led him down this dark path. Right from high school. If he’d retaliated against Devlin back then, where would he be now? Not in a hotel room with a finger pistol making empty threats to his wife’s lover. He didn’t know back then how much it could mean in his future. It had always felt like he was being the bigger man—turning the good-book’s “other cheek” and all—but now look where he was.

He regarded his wife, standing here in this sun bright hotel room, freshly fucked good and deep, barefoot in her expensive pants and her crisp white dress shirt with her nipples poking out double tents. Maybe for the first time ever he saw her for what she was. Evil. Manipulative.

He said, “Did you ever love me?”

Kimmy instantly went limp, as if he’d cut half the cable that ran up her spine. All red-eyed and teary, face harrowed, gravely wounded by such a terrible thing her husband could say to her face.

He followed it up right away with a clarifying angle. “I hope I’m not embarrassing you in front of your boyfriend.”

She cupped a long-fingered hand over her mouth, whispering loud enough to hear: “You’re just being cruel.”

He said, “Can you get him a fucking towel, please?”

She nodded and walked to the bathroom, pausing right in front of him, her eyes searching for his but he wouldn’t meet her gaze. She said, “I never stopped loving you once. Not even a little.”

He rolled his eyes. “How can I even...?”

Talking to her was ludicrous.

“Josh,” she said, firmly. He looked at her. “Don’t let this situation get away from us. Don’t let him direct the way you think.”

“You’re treacherous,” he said. “Get him a fucking towel, please. I’m sick of looking at him.”

Devlin stood up. “You’re taking this the wrong way, man. It’s not supposed to be like this.”

Was the guy fucking kidding? Standing there naked after he’d fucked Kimmy and Kimmy wanted to see their cocks together? To compare them? With his giant load on his stomach and runnind down his legs and his deflating donkey dick hanging between his thighs.

He didn’t answer, looked aside, out the window on the adjoining room where Kimmy had set up their pretend appointment for some guy named benny Chan. Kimmy returned, staying at his side like they were in this together throwing a towel to Devlin, landing it on the foot of the bed. “And here,” she said, tossing one of the hotel’s fluffy robes to join the towel. “Put it on.”

Devlin held out his hands at his thighs, like he couldn’t believe the direction the afternoon had taken. “There’s still fun to be had.”

Kimmy said, “Just, please, Devlin...”

Devlin swiped up the towel and ran it over his stomach and chest and down his legs, his dick wagging back and forth and making sticky sounds against his thigh flesh.

Josh couldn’t help making a disgusted sound, and he walked into the suite’s sitting room and turned his back on them, hands on the upright of one of the chair’s seat-backs. He hadn’t thrown up in the bathroom, but he’d come so close. He could taste the bile; could smell it in his nose. The non-stop eruption of his bully’s massive load all over his chest and stomach had turned him over. Kimmy had watched Devlin do that before. She’d done it in Cayman while her shit-head heel of a husband sat in a hot tub fantasizing she might be doing that very thing.

He’d pictured it before, or at least things like it, but could never imagine it would be so ugly, so disgusting, when bearing direct witness. How many times had he come inside Kimmy? How many times had he come in her mouth, on her tits? He shook his head in slow, deliberate wags, feeling an unstoppable rising flux of shame and hate and bottomless sorrow. He’d offered Kimmy Chang his heart and every ounce of trust he could scrounge. Kimmy started it. Kimmy never stopped it. She’d coaxed him, encouraged him, lured him to his darkest fantasies so she could entangle him, drown him in her own lust. Kimmy never stuck up for him, never put an end to this, just let it all happen. A boot forever stomping on his face, and she just watched.

Kimmy called his name, tender and hopeful.

“What?”

“Josh, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. You asked me to do this today, and I didn’t want to, and I definitely didn’t want to hurt you.”

“Oh my god,” he groaned on a long exhale. He had. He’d asked for it. He’d thought he could be bigger than the crime. Rise above it, walk through the throngs of writhing demons like some anointed noble, impervious to harm; cloaked in some kind of righteous armor. He was such a fucking idiot. He couldn’t trust Kimmy. He couldn’t even trust himself. What was left for him?“There were good parts to this,” Devlin said. “Those good parts were what I wanted. It’s what you want, too. Both of you. I don’t know why either of you made this so hard.”

Devlin was unbelievable, the only one in the room who couldn’t see the unsalvageable destruction in the moment. Josh said, “I never wanted this.”

“You dreamt about it.”

“Not once, Devlin. Not once.”

“Amy said you told her you did. When you were drunk.”

“You gotta be kidding me. You’re writing fiction now. I never said that to Amy.”

“She said you wanted to watch me mess around with Kimmy, give her what you couldn’t.”

Kimmy’s voice, quiet, but chilled with serious warning: “Devlin, don’t.”

“Josh, you wanted this. You asked for it.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“Sure you did. You put your hand on my cock, remember? Held it in the tent at Tiffany’s.”

Now he turned, saw Devlin’s face in a mask of pleading, but his eyes sparkled with clear malevolence. All he’d hoped he’d only imagined that night at Tiffany’s was real. It was real, and he’d been manipulated that very night, sold a bill of goods he’d never ordered in the first place.

Kimmy looked unsure, onboarding this wild reveal, trying to determine whether it was true her husband had held Devlin’s cock.

Devlin kept up the charade, eyes innocent, still pleading for Josh to understand the situation. “You wanted it for Kimmy. Amy said you told her your dick was a useless little Double-A.”

Kimmy said, “He doesn’t have a small dick, Devlin, Jesus Christ.”

Devlin snuffled an indignant laugh.

“You both need to stop talking about my dick,” Josh said. He turned away from them and put his hands on the seat-back’s crest again, staring at the table, wanting to leave, knowing he should, but waiting for something. Not knowing what it was, but still standing here and taking it all, just the same.

Devlin said, “You need to go deep for a pregnancy to take.”

Kimmy gasped.

Red heat raced up Josh’s neck and his hearing went to muted cotton. His temples throbbed and his eyes bugged. It was all so clear. It was laid out in front of him from day one, and his passive malaise allowed it all to roll downhill until it picked up too much speed to stop. Kimmy had shared with Devlin the pain of her miscarriage. Had laid in bed with this man with the enormous dick and lamented her closest, most personal loss. Maybe held in his muscular arms. Shared something that big with him. Bigger than the death of her mother. They’d barely talked about it themselves. Just got up one morning done with crying and went back to doing what they did.

His hands went like claws into the padding of the leather office chair and squeezed them in shaking lumps. The chair was one of those big ones; comfy, chrome flashing, four wheels set on four arms and braced with a chrome racer. It was way lighter than he thought, but then again adrenalin flooded him with hate and rage and revenge.

Rage felt amazing. It felt better than total helplessness, powerlessness—the warm comfort of his everyday environment. Destruction loomed, large and wonderful on the horizon, like a beautiful glowing sunset, like when the asphalt was steaming on a burning day and you could see the waves coming off, hot and sultry. The chair went out of his grip, hurled with surprising force, and he didn’t think he’d ever forget the wonderful snapshot image of Devlin Stone’s face when he saw it coming and realized he wouldn’t be able to get out of the way. It was handsome horror. And, if he saw it right, recognition, like maybe some part of Devlin’s stunted neanderthal brain calculated his own responsibility in summoning the chair down on him at such a vicious and surprising speed.

Kimmy shrieked. The strangest sound Josh had ever heard. Didn’t think he’d ever heard her make a sound like that before. Not once ever in their lives together.

The chair collided with Devlin’s upper body, a mangling crash of awkward angles and sharp edges. Devlin managed to put up an arm in time, but one of the wheels landed a wicked knock on Devlin’s forehead. Devlin crumpled and turned away, the breath knocked out of him. Down he went, face first, naked under the flapping robe, the belt coning undone. The chair toppled onto the other more comfortable chair where Josh had sat and watched Devlin do things to Kimmy he could never do, all in the name of absolution, bounced off the cushy upholstery and landed on Devlin’s back. One of the wheels had knocked off in the prang and it thunked the window hard enough to make it sound like the glass had cracked. It bounced on the carpet and rolled around Devlin’s bare feet in a contracted circle before falling to rest.

Not at all! I appreciate the help. Sometimes there are things I don't see. And I also don't like re-reading too much for some reason. I like to keep moving forward!

KT Morrison

Something else...With his giant load runnined down his stomach....should be running? Also, "for some guy named benny Chan", should be Benny Chan. I feel like such a dick for pointing that out, but I can help it, Lately, I hang on every word!

Wayne

"the owners are treating the place like their private brothel and hiring accordingly." I love that, so snidey !

Bill F Protagoras

Oops, no! Fixed now in MS, thank you!

KT Morrison

Hope your flu is okay!

KT Morrison

Nice, I totally agree!

Andrew Mellein

Yippie!

Andrew Mellein

I like to think Odie shared them... something neither could ignore. But for Kimmy and Josh the miscarried baby became a space between, though I dislike to think that.

Bill F Protagoras

Down he went, face first, naked under the flapping robe, the belt coning undone. Error did somebody tell you? Should be "the belt 'coming' undone.

Bill F Protagoras

New chapter tonight! Both Summer Swap and DITW

KT Morrison

I get the impression there's still a lot of forest and wilderness in Canada. We have to not help the homeless, cos they're so embarrassing, and the super rich need freshly printed high denomination bills to wipe their nether regions on. There aren't enough people dying in the over exploited resource rich countries, so they, the super rich, need to extend the human sacrifice quota to the countries they pretend not to own where they never pay taxes. Did I wish you happy new?

Bill F Protagoras

Me too.

Kat

So many homeless. It’s very sad. They’re local now in Whitby and Ajax. All over Durham Region, when it used to just be in Toronto. And people around here were actually protesting a shelter with only 30 beds to help people in the Winter. We just don’t do guns in the cities and suburbs here. As for bears, etc., that’s no joke. Friends of mine have a cottage in a remote area up north, and their car was actually attacked by a bear. It had a huge dent in it that had to be repaired. Lol

Kat

Glad to hear it's so difficult. It's the same where I live, not the guns, except no bears moose and elk. I doubt there are any wolves in the valley but on the other side of the mountain there may still be a few. Spain is also in a bad way. And years ago I spent time in some of most isolated parts of Spain and in all of them there were addicts. In one place on the border of Portugal (La Raya de Portugal) there were sizeable posts of Guardia Civil and Policia Nacional due to contraband, and yea verily, even there 'where Jesus (Christ) lost his cap' there where addicts! Here, one morning, I went out into garden and there was a lammergeier, a beaded vulture in the crown of one of our Willows. It was only addicted to dropping bones from a great height to eat the marrow as far as I know. It was impressive! It took off as soon as it noticed the bearded Bill. They have to leave out sheep skeletons. There are addicts, of course. Some of them functioning, or being covered up by their family...

Bill F Protagoras

But Geoff had Odile that kind of tied him to Nia. Josh didn’t have a young child tying him to Kimmy except for an unborn child whose parentage is in doubt! We will see in future chapters!

Andrew Mellein

I wonder when the next chapter comes out? It’s so good👏. I think about these characters for days and days!

Andrew Mellein

I went to get my license a few years ago with a friend. We had to do a 2-days long course, and that was just to get the license. Then you have to file paperwork with the Ontario Provincial Police to actually get the paperwork that will allow someone to sell you a gun. There was another day long course for hunting but I didn't do that. I also didn't apply to get a gun; I'm not interested. The only reason I went was because I live rurally, and fairly remotely, and I encounter bears and wolves and moose and elk. Canada is falling apart and now it's the addicts I worry about (yes, even remotely there are those addicted and homeless, looking for money). But you can't shoot people, for crying out loud. Not in Canada. You could shoot an ax murderer and they'd still put you away in the clink.

KT Morrison

What I admired was how you seamlessly fitted it in by referring to the other parts of Josh's hand as though they were part of a gun... I thought it might be awkward but it worked smoothly. I also thought where the fuck would Josh get a gun ( probably off 'Joss'), and how would he know how to use a hand gun... except for RPG. I only ever held a gun once, when a policeman I knew socially coerced me into 'just holding' it... and I insisted he showed me it was empty and refused to pull the trigger! I don't trust myself with weapons. I always remember a line from Homer, I think it's when Odysseus is home in Ithaca in disguise and he finally gets his hands on a sword (I think) and it describes his feeling... the blade itself calls out for blood. I always feel uneasy in the presence of weapons. Though outside the cities in Canada I suppose permits for rifles and shotguns exist. But I imagine even there the purchase of firearms is made difficult!

Bill F Protagoras

Yeah, Devlin getting some final digs in at Josh I think. Like the “Double A” stuff, trying to pass it off as Amy saying it when we already know Devlin came up with that taunt about Josh. Like Josh, we don’t know a lot of what really happened yet, and Kimmy did partake in some digs with Devlin about Josh’s size, but I don’t think it played out in the way Josh thinks with the pregnancy dig. The problem for Kimmy is the actual reality of her pregnancy may be far worse, at least for any hopes of salvaging the marriage.

JL23

I don’t think Kimmy confided anything to Devlin, except Josh’s obsession with Devlin’s size, and other humiliating things about him. Josh and Kimmy aren’t always the most reliable narrators. Devlin is digging at Josh here because he knows it’s over. Josh is leaving. Kimmy will probably leave, too. Devlin’s getting out his last digs at Josh, by saying the one thing that will destroy him the most, because taunting him about his “small dick” doesn’t seem to be working anymore. But, at this point, it doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. The damage is done, and nothing Kimmy can say will change that.

Kat

I loved that it went that route. Showed Josh is no longer afraid of Devlin, just done with him!

Chris K

They may not have given him a gun, but what will Chechov’s PI give to Josh? Inquiring minds want to know.

JL23

I was thinking the same thing about this being in downtown Toronto. It’s not so easy to get a gun here! I don’t know anyone who owns a gun, except maybe the exception of a friend who is a retired cop. Lol Amazing story, KT! I do love the mystery and suspense weaved in.

Kat

There are other occasions on which Kimmy couldn't have been certain she was protected. Believe me my wife who was a doctor discussed the matter with me on many occasions. The beliefs of Kimmy and Devlin are far from set in stone. Though statistics favour Devlin, but statistics once favoured me being dead or paralysed, but luck and the National Health Service ensured that I am still around to bother other people! And it didn't cost me a penny! Except my contributions to the Social Security naturally.

Bill F Protagoras

Yeah, so why was everyone so indignant about Kimmy's behaviour when the only thing to base it on was a deranged vision of Josh's? I explained what I thought above! When lots of people started taking what was the vision of a temporarily altered Josh as gospel I doubted my interpretation. So I checked. It may be that KT has proof that Josh's fears are justified but we don't. Or do we?

Bill F Protagoras

About the finger pistol: Yeah, maybe it was kinda cheap, but I liked the suspense, and it flashed a little bit about what was going to happen in the next scene. But this story is in Canada, in the city of Toronto, and Josh seems like a plain suburban guy. Not a hunter; not a Rocco. There are few guns seen here—especially not something you could put in your pocket. Josh would have to be a criminal to have a handgun (maybe he scored one from the P.I.!). If he lived rurally or was a hunter, maybe he would have gone to get his gun license. Guns are pretty serious business in Canada and you just don’t see them (very often). It would be a wild storyline with all kinds of devious aspects if Josh had produced a pistol. If it was contraband: how the heck did he get it? If it was legal: How? You need a special gun license, the restricted license, and even now those restricted gun laws have changed recently to be even more restrictive. If Josh obtained one legally, he would have had to have Kimmy sign off on it through paperwork sent to her by the provincial police before he was allowed to purchase one. These laws may sound harsh to my beloved American friends, but, hey, they might have kept good old Devlin alive (boo!), and they sure as shit kept Josh out of jail (yay!)!

KT Morrison

Another thing that annoys me is that when you look up "Father of Lies" the first thing that comes up is Herodotus... which means my inner pedant and maybe more so, lover of all things ancient Greek won't allow me to call the Devil the father of lies. Every time I'm tempted the cartoon devil on my left shoulder wags his figure from side to side. Which reminds me after the most recent behaviour of Devlin I began to wonder, if we should still equate him with the devil. My two main reasons for thinking yes... 1. The face of Pennywise when I thought of him as a clown, and 2, That he is still the prince of the banality of evil!

Bill F Protagoras

If it happened, we didn’t see it, and she doesn’t have the kind of relationship with Devlin where she’d talk in depth about her feelings (though Josh doesn’t know that). It’s something that probably just came up in the course of conversation at some point, and Devlin used it to wield maximum pain on Josh in that moment. In the first book, she tells Devlin they need a condom cause she’s ovulating when he comes to the apartment for the first time, but they don’t have sex then. That’s the only time I remember the idea of pregnancy being discussed, if she is pregnant by Devlin it would have happened when they were messing around at Tiffany’s at the beginning…though we don’t 100% know exactly what happened there either.

JL23

CSH, sounds like that Escher drawing where everyone is waking upstairs.

Donkatsu

To be honest my remark was sarcastically rhetorical... of course, they would support her, especially being pregnant, but they probably would all disapprove of her breaking up with Josh to a greater or lesser extent. I am glad you agree. And if the child isn't Josh's!

Bill F Protagoras

My point however was everybody focused on a product of Josh's incensed imagination, which as far as we know never happened... I have a vague memory of a treacherous thought along those lines. I can't find it, I skimmed... so unsurprising! Can you tell me anywhere were she sought consolation of any kind and Devlin gave it. I find it difficult on Kimmy's part she's wound up so tight. But I don't think he could even fake it. It's true if she had done it, it would be really bad, but even so context is all. I'm sure Devlin would boast he had a better chance of impregnating her, because he's always telling her how deep and how copiously he is gonna shoot his next load. I have speculated that dear old dad has been pressing for grand children... and Devlin won't or more importantly can't provide them!

Bill F Protagoras

Well if they find out what she was up to, daddy’s disapproval will be a thing to witness.

CSH

Well she did, in fact seek solace in those things, the flattery, the illusion of power, the false promise. She also took solace in making Josh suffer, though he took solace in his own suffering. Let’s see if the two of them sit down and talk to each other for once, without it quickly slipping into their sexual game. Then….maybe it can be salvaged.

CSH

I think the more likely consequence is Daddy deciding he’s had enough of junior fucking around with the family business.

CSH

Corollary to the above, and based on what we know of the personalities involved, I'd wager "don't fuck with Dad's money" is a lesson aggressively and without tenderness drilled into the Stone son.

Glaucon

Sure, maybe he doesn't formally get in trouble internally (although it can't be good for company morale either), but if this is publicly available information (which a trial would be), it would be a realistic consequence for the brokerage to lose business if it's common knowledge in the industry that the owners are treating the place like their private brothel and hiring accordingly. How much business do they lose? Up to the author, really. But it certainly doesn't make them look good.

Glaucon

Love ke the insights.. I do remember that Geoff was pretty done with Nia at one point at the end ..So possibly after time Josh and Kimmy could reconnect . Stranger things have happen...Devlin in way shape or form should be out of the running..The cost the deception tpp high!!

Mike Monroe

One possible ending.... Josh leaves Kimmy. Kimmy is broken: Left alone, and pregnant. A year later we catch up with Josh, in bed with a new woman, presumably his new GF...maybe his fiance. He rolls toward her in bed, and whispers "Ya know, I have this little fantasy..."

Pete

I didn’t want to try and predict anything, because so far I’ve been horribly wrong, lol, but I don’t see Josh and Kimmy leaving together. If they do manage to, they aren’t staying together. Josh will go off to Rome again. He will need to for work soon, anyway. Maybe he’ll meet someone new who will love him completely for who he is and not disrespect him behind his back with his HS bully. Kimmy has used up all of her chances with Josh. She did conspire with Devlin. She surely cheated on Josh, over and over. She made fun of him and mocked his body behind his back. And now, Josh believes that she confided in the worst person in the world about her miscarriage, something she didn’t even talk to her husband about. That’s going to be it for Kimmy. He’ll never trust her again, and he most certainly will require a paternity test if she claims that the baby she’s carrying is his. I’m still unconvinced that Amy had anything to do with this. Yes, Josh said she texted him, but do we have proof of this? Didn’t Josh receive the texts from an unknown number? I would not be surprised if this entire thing was orchestrated by Devlin alone. He’s evil enough, and appears to have some sort of obsession in ruining Josh. Not to mention, he has some sexual kink involving him. While he enjoys Kimmy’s body immensely, she was only a means for him to get to Josh. With Josh gone from the picture, Devlin’s probably not going to be too broken up if Kimmy quits her job and blocks all contact with him. It’s Josh that he wanted. In the end, it’s Josh who holds all the power. Kimmy is in for some very lonely times. I’m tired of making excuses for Kimmy. Yes, she lost her mom young, and yes she was very distressed over her miscarriage while working in a bland job, etc. None of that excuses what she did to Josh. I’m having a hard time believing that she really, truly loves Josh. She is a very weak person. If she really was the spine of their marriage, she’d have found a way to deal with her issues with Josh without all of this deceit and manipulation. She falls apart the moment Josh (the heart, who she said was weak) finds his strength. She gaslights Josh anytime the spotlight is on her, and hates him for making her do what they did today in the hotel room. No one forced her to have sex with Devlin the first place. This is all her fault. She said that she didn’t think Josh would be able to handle the full, unadulterated truth, and she was right. Josh learned far more from this event than she wanted. I hope she gets therapy. She desperately needs it.

Kat

True. Her timing is terrible. And yet, I can understand her wanting to interrupt his internal narrative; not wanting to let that thought take root in him - that he didn't contribute to/drive what happened today. If she says nothing, she risks that misperception becoming more than a passing thought; perhaps a belief or conviction of his.

Pete

Apropos of nothing, I hope Josh’s first words in the next chapter are: “Well, that finally shut him up!”

JL23

Much like Jerry Seinfeld said about Newman, there’s not more to Devlin….there’s less. Well, besides the donkey dick, there’s plenty of that. But probably not much besides.

JL23

Josh dumps Kimmy, Kimmy dumps Devlin, Devlin dumps Josh, Hyun dumps Kimmy. Wait! That’s not right.

CSH

For the moment. Kimmy may have an opinion on the matter she seems convinced she loves him.

Bill F Protagoras

Yeah I think that’s probably exactly what he was thinking…”you guys ruined my good time by being all serious but still …wrecking your marriage with my mighty appendage is fucking hot… ah yeargh!” Not Nobel material there Devlin. Ironically, Josh emerging from this stronger than the other two. He kicked Devlin’s ass and manned up enough to tell Kimmy what he really thought of her. Perhaps he didn’t actually understand what he thought of her until that instant. You all know I’m an Evil Kimmy lover but at this point Josh looks like he’s done with her cheating ass.

CSH

Sadly we often take things like that for granted in the chase of more “glamorous” and material things. Nia realized this at the end and was able to make it right, can Kimmy?

JL23

Yep. That’s sums it up pretty well.

CSH

The way he thinks, he might end up being impressed Josh took a stand. But he’s still a bull in a china shop not worried about breaking whatever he has to in order to get what he wants. And I think Kimmy is right, he doesn’t want her as much as he wants her in the context of her being Josh’s wife.

JL23

Did Devlin console her or did his dick? How consoling were his words, can you quote the flimflam man? Can anyone quote what the smooth tongued Lothario said that could justify Josh's plunge into a hellmouth of conclusions. You all (not you personally) you might as well say she sought solace in Stone senior's bank account, or the shower of flattery Devlin self-servingly regaled her with, or the false promise of a new life in a new river! I suspect that you personally would still love her if she were ten times the bitch Josh's dark muse portrays her to be... because Josh could be wrong? If so I'm happy to be, as Josh is, the odd man out!

Bill F Protagoras

No ones gonna get in trouble for the chair tossing. Maybe it cracked a window. Probably not, but if it did Big D will pay for it. I do like him having to pay, lol. But isn’t the symbolism of Josh smacking Devlin down with a chair a thing of wonder? Maybe it cracked his arrogant facade and that’s what we heard.

CSH

His father owns the company, and just a guess this is probably not the first time Devlin has “dipped his wick” with someone at work. Maybe there are other reasons he wouldn’t want to press charges, but I don’t get the sense Devlin would be worried about getting in trouble in work. He sees himself as invincible, and he may see this as a way to continue to torment Josh.

JL23

I was really thinking more about the chair shattering some shoddy glass and injuring or causing fatalities among the shoddy citizenry.

Bill F Protagoras

Feels like the moment for Josh when he truly realizes it’s over is when Kimmy tells him “I didn’t want this today, I did it cause you asked me to.” And there’s an element of truth to that, but when Josh says he can’t trust Kimmy or himself, I think that’s him admitting they are just be bad for each other. He can’t trust Kimmy or himself because neither of them can control their baser instincts and lusts.

JL23

Plus, is Devlin gonna want to go through the hassle and risk of getting police involved? Forcing the details of everything out in the open, including fucking a direct report at work? He probably has more to lose than gain.

Glaucon

Shooting someone - jail. Throwing a chair - eh. Pay for the chair maybe. Course I bet Devlin paid for the room so he’ll get the bill. Which is sweet now that I think of it.

CSH

Those scenes were in The Choirboys. I found them back then…

CSH

I see this as the unforgivable sin. The death of their child and she sought solace with Josh’s worst enemy.

CSH

I’d say pretty much impossible for a marriage to recover from those sentiments.

CSH

One can only hope that her wings regenerate. Perhaps a sacrifice of some sort would appease the gods?

CSH

I see Devlin as someone who figured it out, slower than Kimmy, but he started saying those irreparable things at the end because he saw the writing on the wall. Neither Kimmy nor Devlin were talking their way out of this. Josh was done. Since he may never see Josh again in this open setting, he just started laying all the hits out that he'd been saving to destroy Josh, break him, injure his psyche, tear him apart. And it worked, just not in the way Devlin expected because instead of running away like old Josh, he snapped and fought back. Why? Because as much as he may think he's done with that evil manipulator, there's still a part of him that loves her. And that's why the pregnancy comment hurt so much. I love the astute comment from CSH on pointing out the "you two" line. That broke Kimmy. She had spent the entire last two books saying this is "us", were together, we stand firm as a unit, we do everything as a team. And Josh is calling that bullshit and lumping Kimmy in with Devlin as a team. She hates that asshole, even though she loves being fucked by him. So to have Josh lower his estimation of her value to Josh as the same level as Devlin? Ouch!

L_S87

the cops had a "hierarchy of hardons" with diamond cutter at the top, the only other that I remember is "throbbing blue veiner".

Steve McCarty

Only my opinion I imagine... you know the word that really gets up my nose... Loser! Life is a game... but not one you can win or lose. Loser belongs for those rodents in the rat race. Sorry about the Ms Marple!

Bill F Protagoras

What more could she do to the guy? But I agree, if Josh moves for a divorce at some point, I don’t think she’d give in without a fight. The paternity of the child would be something she could use to keep Josh in her life. But he doesn’t even know all of her betrayals yet, like the stuff with Hyun, I just can’t see this Josh getting over it to the point where they can stay married. As others have said, he just seems disgusted more than turned on by the reality.

JL23

Idolikethathaha

KT Morrison

Yow, this is great. Josh was the easiest to keep and the most valuable.

KT Morrison

Really? I remember reading a few pages of The Onion Field, swiped from my mom's bedside table, hoping it might have the kind of scenes I was looking for back then.

KT Morrison

ever ready diamond cutter!

KT Morrison

I agree!

KT Morrison

Fixed now in the MS!

KT Morrison

Anybody else think that? Or is it all about Josh's nightmare and the chances of him going to gaol because he threw hotel property and cracked a window endangering passers by, or collateral damage as they are known as... sometimes. Go to gaol! Do not pass go!

Bill F Protagoras

I think it would be funny if Kimmys baby turned out to be Josh’s and Devlin turned out to be impotent! KT does loves to do the exact opposite of what one thinks is going to happen. Of course I still see Josh not getting back with Kimmy after this chapter! He disgusted that he doesn’t even want to touch Kimmy.

Andrew Mellein

She knows she's pregnant and sees furniture headed in her direction, and in shock it flashes through her mind that her beloved husband is putting, what she is desperately willing to be, 'his' child in jeopardy. She could even be hoping whatever it is hits Devlin! She shrieks! Women are able to multitask it seems!

Bill F Protagoras

So he Hulks out and throws furniture and when she shrieks Mr Sensitive thinks... she never did that for ME!

Bill F Protagoras

My second was... Mr Paranoid doesn't know she's pregnant so his mind goes to his worst scenario, her big dicked boss did what he failed to, and consoled his beloved wife when he was unable to do so.

Bill F Protagoras

"Kimmy gasped." My first thought is she's thinking how does he know she is pregnant.

Bill F Protagoras

I could easily see Kimmy turning into a raging bitch on Josh. Right now she's acting contrite and submissive because she still has hope to change Josh's mind. She even said she hates Josh for trapping and tricking her like this. She loves him even more, but if he walks, I could see that souring and her going after him with a vengeance.

L_S87

Still, Kimmy still has her family, the Changs, right? They won't take Josh's side...

Bill F Protagoras

Hyun may not give Kimmy the elbow, or the boot, but Kimmy's behaviour is going to be very troublesome for her. Nevertheless a distraught friendless Kimmy? And Karina?

Bill F Protagoras

Poor Kimmy, look at all the things you needed to make you happy... and you couldn't keep the least expensive and most modest of them. This was the abyss you glimpsed when he cut ties and went to Rome. Everybody seems to think whose baby it is is important. Of course, it always has been... for you. Those are two important concerns I had.

Bill F Protagoras

"He’d offered Kimmy Chang his heart and every ounce of trust he could scrounge." Trust he could scrounge... how unexpectedly touching. Because Josh didn't give his trust lightly, how about you Kimmy? From now on you will be two Kimmy Changs in his mind, but what trace of Waters will remain? And it still doesn't add up for me! What did he, and many others, see in you? You trust no-one, right? Just sci fi paranoid.

Bill F Protagoras

Steve McCarty

A happy event... is that the title of the next instalment?

Bill F Protagoras

I am a hopeless romantic and not willing to give up on a modified HEA despite the mortal sin of Kimmy engaging in pillow talk about the miscarriage with her "boyfriend". I understand Josh's rage, this was their business that should have been shared with very few and only with the consent of husband and wife. Sharing this information with Stone, who lacks both empathy and any common sense at all, seems unforgivable. My guess is that Kimmy will use Stone's towel for a DNA test and she will face the same dilemma Nia faced. Nia eventually taped the test results back together that proved Odele was Geoff's child and not Dino's. Kimmy has been affirming Josh as the father much like Nia did with Geoff. I am hoping and praying for Josh to win the paternity showdown, for the sake of the child most importantly, but also the delicious schadenfreude of "little doofus" not measuring up against Josh and his much maligned but ever ready, double A "diamond cutter".

Steve McCarty

I only realized myself as I began to write.

Bill F Protagoras

There are plenty more chairs in that room.

KT Morrison

Mayhaps they'll sprout anew.

KT Morrison

What I did have in mind: the devil is what you make him.

KT Morrison

Oh wow, I didn't even realize that. I love it! Clown gun for a clown.

KT Morrison

Thank you!

KT Morrison

Excellent summary.

Bill F Protagoras

We heard his thoughts as he realized he was coming... they were probably fairly representative!

Bill F Protagoras

Though I'm glad to see that the wicked comfy chair abetted in ruining Josh's marriage... where's my suspense, wait a minute though, before Josh started the spectacularly satisfying violence did some one announce a pregnancy?

Bill F Protagoras

"It was handsome horror. And, if he saw it right, recognition, like maybe some part of Devlin’s stunted neanderthal brain calculated his own responsibility in summoning the chair down on him at such a vicious and surprising speed." Nice adrenal slo-mo sensation!

Bill F Protagoras

"Red heat raced up Josh’s neck and his hearing went to muted cotton. Just got up one morning done with crying and went back to doing what they did." Where's your skepticism when you need it, Josh? Has some one been mucking about in your mind?

Bill F Protagoras

"Devlin said, “You need to go deep for a pregnancy to take.” Whatever is he implying, or do I mean asserting?

Bill F Protagoras

"Kimmy said, “He doesn’t have a small dick, Devlin, Jesus Christ.” Straight from the whore's mouth, you see the truth in her beautiful teeth. Do horses have dental treatment?

Bill F Protagoras

“You wanted it for Kimmy. Amy said you told her your dick was a useless little Double-A.” So maybe Amy is a bomb thrower in the guise of a mistressmind, or Devlin learnt to lie at the feet of Herodotus, I'm just spit-balling!

Bill F Protagoras

"Now he turned, saw Devlin’s face in a mask of pleading, but his eyes sparkled with clear malevolence. All he’d hoped he’d only imagined that night at Tiffany’s was real. It was real, and he’d been manipulated that very night, sold a bill of goods he’d never ordered in the first place." I'm conflicted... tying up all the loose ends isn't usually your style... it is of course the coup de grace... but I almost gracelessly wrote... Thank you Ms. Marple! Thank goodness I stopped myself.

Bill F Protagoras

"Not once, Devlin. Not once.” Fevre dream, Josh!

Bill F Protagoras

“Oh my god,” he groaned on a long exhale. He had. He’d asked for it. He’d thought he could be bigger than the crime. Rise above it, walk through the throngs of writhing demons like some anointed noble, impervious to harm; cloaked in some kind of righteous armor. He was such a fucking idiot. " Role playing games are the porn of violence, Josh, but I mean that in a good way. You know your characters, KT! Although I'm sure they are unruly at times. I love how you have made the other two's words and actions seem trivial now that Josh has brought the walls tumbling down, bit of a pyrrhic victory, alas!

Bill F Protagoras

"gravely wounded by such a terrible thing her husband could say to her face." Yup, the stiletto in the back is so much more merciful until it starts to hurt! Can someone explain to the lady that a stiletto is a short slender steel blade, not fashion accessory?

Bill F Protagoras

“Josh, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. You asked me to do this today, and I didn’t want to, and I definitely didn’t want to hurt you.” She's pretty dumb for such a clever person, right! This might not be the right moment to tell him it's not your fault but his, Kimmy!

Bill F Protagoras

"How many times had he come inside Kimmy? How many times had he come in her mouth, on her tits? He shook his head in slow, deliberate wags, feeling an unstoppable rising flux of shame and hate and bottomless sorrow. He’d offered Kimmy Chang his heart and every ounce of trust he could scrounge. Kimmy started it. Kimmy never stopped it. She’d coaxed him, encouraged him, lured him to his darkest fantasies so she could entangle him, drown him in her own lust. Kimmy never stuck up for him, never put an end to this, just let it all happen. A boot forever stomping on his face, and she just watched." Shit KT! You are the best at the worst things, as well as just the best!

Bill F Protagoras

"He’d pictured it before, or at least things like it, but could never imagine it would be so ugly, so disgusting, when bearing direct witness." The difference, for the victim, between porn and real life. Explain it to Kimmy. Oh, wait a minute, she may already be awakening to the ugliness herself... maybe realizing humiliation & shame walk hand in hand. Like lovers. And shame is the greater of the two!

Bill F Protagoras

"He hadn’t thrown up in the bathroom, but he’d come so close. He could taste the bile; could smell it in his nose. The non-stop eruption of his bully’s massive load all over his chest and stomach had turned him over. Kimmy had watched Devlin do that before. She’d done it in Cayman while her shit-head heel of a husband sat in a hot tub fantasizing she might be doing that very thing." Meta alert... and you've got to admit Kimmy read him well last instalment! Too clever for her own good that one!

Bill F Protagoras

Oh and nice return with the double A line.

CSH

Ah KT, what have you done to my Evil Kimmy? She’s not lookin too powerful right now. Most unfair. Crushing Devlin is fine but cutting off my Kimmy’s demon wings was overly harsh of you. A cry of lament!

CSH

Deflated donkey dick, need I say more?

Bill F Protagoras

“You’re treacherous,” he said." The man is on a roll! He's acting all patriarchal... I bet I'm not the only one with a little tingle, ey, Kimmy.?And I haven't forgotten you, Devvikins!

Bill F Protagoras

"Talking to her was ludicrous." Too true, Josh! Way too true!

Bill F Protagoras

"He said, “Can you get him a fucking towel, please?” This is Josh speak for... attend to your master you hypocritical bitch!

Bill F Protagoras

Painful to read. Excellent but painful. I think Josh finally lumping them together with the “you two” line then telling Kimmy outright that she cheated on him and plotted behind his back was crushing to Kimmy. It was seeing someone grow up in an instant with a simple moment of insight. He is done. Devlin comes off as clueless and stupid. All Kimmy’s artful manipulation is shredded to nothing. Josh finally seems to have reached the point where he is ready to leave her.

CSH

“I hope I’m not embarrassing you in front of your boyfriend.” Yay! At last! Litotes shoved up her ass and not in a 'loving' Devlin way... Excuse me, all this childishness must have caught me off guard!

Bill F Protagoras

"Maybe for the first time ever he saw her for what she was. Evil. Manipulative." 'Maybe,' Act in haste repent at leisure has always been your guide in the past... but you don't think that worked in the past anymore. And now for the question born of grief that is pointless to ask... He said, “Did you ever love me?”

Bill F Protagoras

"It had always felt like he was being the bigger man—turning the good-book’s “other cheek” and all—but now look where he was." No muggins Josh when you bestride the two testaments the two stools wobble.

Bill F Protagoras

The Golden Rule... the woman taken in adultery... we all live in glass houses with frosted walls.

Bill F Protagoras

“You cheated on me. You plotted behind my back.” The truth, like murder, will out! And they thought Josh was a mug, and they reply like guilty children. The past is always with us and we sure as shit can walk in the same riverbed twice. And stub our toes once more on that damned stone!

Bill F Protagoras

“You two think you’re so smart, so great. You think you’re better than everyone else.” Josh echoes his wife's earlier criticism of her lover to mock the two of them.

Bill F Protagoras

As I suspected Josh used a clown gun to deal with a foolish Devlin... Josh has obviously read his Stephen King. Of course, as anybody who has read or seen "It" knows, as I said the 'mal bicho nunca muere' but the Clown is vulnerable to child's play. Though it seems time for my man Josh to put away childish things... if only it wasn't to struggle against his sinful wife. I've never liked choosing between me Mam and me Dad.

Bill F Protagoras

Wait till she hears that Josh didn't know she was fucking him in the first place!

Chris K

Yes, Hyun does not like Devlin. Wait till she hears about Kimmy fuckin Devlin again!

Andrew Mellein

That’s what’s probably going to happen! Josh ruins Devlin! Devlin sacked from his fathers business! Josh lives a better life without Kimmy!

Andrew Mellein

She doesn't deserve Hyun either. She manipulated and lied to her as well, hope Hyun kicks her to the curb after Josh does.

Chris K

I think she loves Josh. But she enjoyed the power dynamic she felt like she was building over these past few months, as well as the powerful job and powerful lover. She fell in love with this idea that she was the “spine” of the marriage, that she held the cards, and the power she felt that gave her after the lows of her mother’s death and miscarriage. Lots of decisions she’ll regret, but I also think Josh comes to the realization before the final Devlin taunt that in the end, they were both participants in what will probably end up being the destruction of their marriage.

JL23

Josh's ball just dropped! Good let the rage come forth! So I see Kimmy and Hyun sharing an apartment and raising the kids together I hope it's Devlin's! Kimmy dumps Devlin and Josh dumps Kimmy!

RCH

Yeah, the Kimmy/Josh stuff is painful to read (good writing but painful to read). Both realizing their marriage is probably dead, with one slowly resigning himself to it (before being blinded by red hot rage) and the other desperately trying to figure out a way to hang on. When she said she “hated” him for dangling absolution in front of her but yanking it back once everything played out, I think that is because she always had a fundamental understanding (as we did) that Josh could never handle the reality of this. However, it never stopped her from letting this train get down the tracks without a way to stop it, and for her letting her lust and enjoyment blind her to people like Devlin and Amy plotting against her. At this point, I’m honestly not sure how much of this really is some combination of Devlin/Amy plotting destruction, I guess we’ll find out in the coming chapters. Are they just getting off on using their sexual power to ruin lives “Cruel Intentions” style, are they just focused on their own kinks and don’t care who gets in the way…honestly don’t think we’ve seen enough of Amy to know, and we’ve never heard Devlin’s internal monologue to know his exact angle.

JL23

4th para, second line “the” should be “them”. Great read, KT. How is Kimmy going to talk her way out of this one?

Donkatsu

I think Nia did love Geoff! and she admitted she made mistakes. Especially after finding out what a POS and abuser Bruno was. I love Cherry Blossoms! But Kimmy I don't think truly loves Josh especially to tell intimate details of her miscarriage in bed with Devlin. Kimmy thinks she does but she would have kept fucking Devlin if Josh hadn't caught on. Josh would be right to split and throw all her shit out of their apartment window. I don't think they even had sex since before he split to Italy. There are definitely not going to have now!

Andrew Mellein

Josh has gone full Hulk, he might just try and choke the life outta Kimmy! (Hope not). I just wanna see her excommunicated by all friends and family, jobless, alone and pregnant wondering if any of it was worth it.

Chris K

He needs to get on him while he's laid out on the floor and go to town on his ass. Beat him so he will never be pretty again to hook with some other guys wives!

Andrew Mellein

I think he's done with her. Kimmy had an intimate affair with his bully there is no coming back from that! He wants total revenge against Devlin and possibly Amy. He's not walking out of there with her. He's probably throwing her shit out of the apartment window! When Josh said I’m sick of looking at him.” I expected him to also say " I'm also sick of looking at you!" Josh admits after watching Kimmy have sex with Devlin it made him sick. I would be surprised if Josh ever wanted to have sex with Kimmy again!

Andrew Mellein

This chapter was incredible, KT! I’m not going to make any predictions, and just wait and see what you have in store. As usual, I can hardly wait for the next chapter.

Kat

Wow. That dialogue was brutal. Amazing but awful. Such immense relief at the finger gun... only to be wound up at the end wondering if that wheel to the noggin caused damage that will ruin Josh. Hopefully not. Getting knocked out by a chair will be quite the bruise to Devlin's ego, assuming he wakes up. The interaction between Kimmy and Josh is so dreadful. You can see Kimmy figuring it out, squirming, pleading. Trying to claw her way into a place where he opens his heart a sliver so she can worm her way back again. Because regardless of how despicable and evil she might be, now that Josh sees it clearly, she DOES love him. She's twisted, yet truly devoted, at least emotionally if not physically, to him. I wonder if the shriek at the end is anger at what Devlin said, or fear at what Josh just did. Maybe a screech of support that Devlin clearly deserves this, because after that pregnancy statement, Josh will NEVER believe this baby is his, and Kimmy has to know that. What little opportunity she had to claw back into Josh's good graces just evaporated and she'll see it as all Devlin's fault because the asshole just can't keep his mouth shut, though her marriage badly needs it in that moment. Does Kimmy convince Josh to walk out of there with her or does he leave her to fix this mess of her own making?

L_S87

So good! I called it! Finger pistol! Devlin got knocked the fuck out!!!

Chris K

Good thing Josh didn't kill Devlin! But he might have at the end of this chapter! And if he hasn't I hope he beats the shit out of Devlin. Devlin had it coming. Just as everybody predicted, Josh is grossed out and disgusted with Kimmy. He's done with her. What a bitch to tell Devlin about her miscarriage an intimate private moment. This moment proved she doesn't love Josh no matter how much she says she does. KT. please let Kimmy suffer another miscarriage! Kimmy deserves it she is a loathsome person and I don't want her to get away unscathed. This was another great chapter! It's soon coming to an end!

Andrew Mellein

That was a powerful chapter, and besides the violence at the end, it felt like an official death of a marriage. A little bit like Geoff finding out Nia had an affair with Dino and that Odie probably wasn’t his. Assuming we still have a few chapters left to wrap this up, but can’t see how Josh ever trusts Kimmy again. And, he doesn’t even know the full, awful truth about Kimmy actually being pregnant. This rage was prompted by Devlin taunting him about the miscarriage and the insinuation Josh isn’t man enough to father a child (to my knowledge Devlin has no idea she’s actually pregnant and wasn’t playing that angle there - and I don’t think Josh interpreted Kimmy’s reaction for what it was). When she actually tells Josh she’s pregnant there’s zero chance he’s going to believe it’s his, and it’s just another nail in the coffin to their relationship. As if it needed more at this point. Guess you can’t rule anything out, maybe a Geoff/Nia like reconciliation down the line. But can’t see that right now.
