DITW 14-19: Odyssey 14

“So Glenn tied Amy to the bed,” Kimmy said, “and then came out and did that sales pitch, going through all that bullshit with me?”

“It’s not bullshit.”

“It’s psychopathic. . . . And, yeah, if it’s real, you treat it like bullshit.” Kimmy jabbed her hand at Devlin while she talked, astounded he wouldn’t see things the way they were. “You gave me a sales pitch to sign paperwork. A letter of intent that I would serve as your counsel. But you give the moment no reverence, nothing of value. You treat everything like a game. Like everything revolves around your dick.”

Devlin’s lips pursed and then a slow smile began to spread. He said, “I’ve never seen you disrupted like this. Never seen you so emotional. I don’t know what to make of it.”

“Don’t try to turn the tables on me, Devlin. I’m not stupid.”

“Kimmy,” Devlin said, strolling back to the bed, turning, then sitting down beside Amy’s naked body. “I hired you for fun. I hired you because I knew you could do the job I wanted you to do, but I also hired you—yes—to fuck around with Josh’s head.”

“It’s juvenile, Devlin,” she said, announcing each syllable to emphasize the importance of what she was saying, to slow it down so he could understand it.

“You did it, too. I wasn’t alone. I wasn’t by myself. Sometimes, when I’d lost interest, it was you who renewed it.”

Amy said, “Can someone untie me? You guys are so boring.”

“Shut up, Amy,” Devlin said over his shoulder and Amy chuckled.

Devlin continued, the daylight falling on his broad shoulders and lighting up his glossy black hair, Amy a moving flesh landscape behind him. “Don’t act like I’m fucking up. Don’t act like what I’ve done here is something crazy.” He looked over his shoulder at blindfolded Amy, then back at Kimmy. “You were the one who fucked me in Cayman while Josh sat at the house waiting for you to come back. Was that juvenile? You don’t get to pick and choose. You don’t get to align everything in your favor when you’ve been complicit from day one.”

Kimmy chewed her cheek, raising her chin in defiance. She cocked a hip and put her hands on her waist.

“You wanted me because you wanted a job. I know it. I said it to you a hundred times. You’re a lawyer, you work at an immigration place. You’re worth so much more. And after that party you were gonna go home and you were gonna make cat baskets for a bunch of lisping cat daddies with disposable income. What does that do for anybody? It doesn’t do anything for you. You fought with me at Tiffany’s—you were fighting to get out. You were fighting to get away, to get out from under the burden of a pointless existence. And I gave you everything. As much as I could. Not to toy with you but because you deserve it. You can do anything. Anything you want. You’ve got the drive, you’ve got the intelligence, and look at you”—he turned to speak over his shoulder—“you can’t see her, but holy shit, Amy. As tall as me in heels, thousand-dollar shoes, jet-black suit.” He faced Kimmy again. “Prada, right?”

She clenched her jaw, nostrils flaring, crossing her arms and staring back at him. “Yes.”

Devlin spoke over his shoulder again, but kept his eyes on Kimmy, sly smirk tugging up the corner of his mouth. “When she walks into a boardroom, you should see everybody’s face. She scares them shitless.”

Amy scoffed and said, “Whoop-dee-doo.”

Devlin said, “Seriously, Kimmy. Don’t go off the rails on me. I didn’t fuck Amy. I’m not going to fuck Amy. That’s Glenn’s job.”

Amy said “Where is Glenn?”

“So don’t listen to Amy,” Devlin said. “She’s here and she’s tied to the bed for only one reason.”

“And what’s that?”

Now Devlin smiled again. He patted his hands on his knees, then stood. He removed his suit jacket and tossed it to a nearby chair. Then, with his eyes on Kimmy’s, he unbuckled his belt and withdrew it in one quick snap from the belt loops. “I told you. I brought Amy here so you could punish her.”

Amy said, “Here’s where she runs out of the room.”

Kimmy ran the tip of her tongue across her upper lip, back and forth, back and forth, eyeing Devlin and then Amy’s naked body. She looked at Devlin’s eyes, looked at his hand holding the circled loop of his belt.

And Amy was right. The urge to flee was massive.

In her mind, her feet had already skittered out of the room, but only by sheer force did she keep them planted on Devlin’s bedroom carpet. The moment dragged on. Her staring, Amy wondering what was going on, and Devlin smiling, holding out his belt.

Kimmy said, “What am I punishing her for?”

“You know what she did.”

“Do I? Do I really know?”

“Come and ask her,” Devlin said, presenting the belt once more with an eager gesture.

Kimmy uncrossed her arms, stepped toward the bed, looking at her high-school friend laid out with hands above her head, naked from head to toe, except for a sleeping mask across her eyes. She said to Amy, “What am I punishing you for?”

“There’s nothing to punish me for. I didn’t do anything.”

Devlin flicked his belt and it snapped against the sole of Amy’s foot. Amy’s leg jumped and she tucked it underneath her, laughing and rolling on the bed.

Devlin looked at Kimmy and held the gaze, and Kimmy felt an uncomfortable connection to him in that moment. Devlin’s words echoed: Amy’s a psychopath. And Amy was. Kimmy had always denied it, because it was cool to be Amy’s friend. Now she licked her lower lip, then reluctantly held out her hand. Devlin put his belt into her grip, smiling wide, light gleaming in his dark eyes that shone blue in the the daylight spilling into his bedroom.

They’d spent a lot of time in here doing terrible things.

This was nothing new.

She walked around the bed to the far side, getting near to Amy’s face.

“You texted my husband behind my back.”

Amy said, “I would never do that.”

“I know that you did,” Kimmy told her.

“That’s such bullshit.”

Kimmy looked at Devlin. Devlin shrugged, putting up his hands in a gesture of What are you gonna do?

Kimmy said, “And what about a picture of me?”

“What about it? What did I do with a picture of you?”

Kimmy stood looking at Amy’s vulnerable body and for the first time felt a vengeful urge to strike the belt across her. She gripped the leather in her fist. A slap right across Amy’s bare stomach. A slap across her tits. She deserved it. She deserved the sting.

“You taunted Josh. You taunted my husband to my face.”

“I did do that,” Amy said. “But I was only joking.”

“And what did you think was so funny? Pointing at my husband’s penis and saying it was so small? And what was that for? Why would someone say such a thing? I mean, you know I married the man I love. And if I love him...”

“If you love him it wouldn’t matter.”

“But you thought it might. You thought if you created the smallest measure of doubt, that my marriage would crumble. Not because you care about my marriage, but because you love the crumble.”

Amy chuckled. “That’s ludicrous.”

“Is it?”

“What kind of woman would leave the man she married because his penis was smaller than a potential lover’s? That would be insane.”

“I didn’t leave him because of that.”

Amy cocked her head, lips pursing. “You left him?”

“No. No I didn’t,” Kimmy said through gritted teeth, wringing the leather in her fists.

Devlin said, “She didn’t leave him. He didn’t leave her. You won’t believe what’s happening.”

Kimmy said, “You didn’t tell her?”

Devlin shook his head no. “It’s our secret.”

An indignant shift adjusted her stomach, thinking how she shared such intimacy with the man her husband hated. The secret they held together was a lie. That was something she could hold onto for strength, remind herself she wasn’t as bad as Devlin and Amy believed.

Amy said, “I made fun of Josh’s penis to remind you what you missed out on—because you were a chicken.”

Kimmy’s eyes moved from Devlin to Amy’s masked face. That expectant smile. Amy knowing she was wicked; reveling in it. Kimmy had envied Amy’s teenage aloofness at one time; the ease with which Amy handled life’s common misfortunes. Amy always knew what to say. And it was because Amy didn’t care about consequences. Or outcomes. She was protected, privileged. Privileged with beauty and some other thing she wielded like a two-pronged weapon along with her confidence: a sultry something, an indescribable quality that made anyone think of sex every time Amy walked or talked. She’d learned to use it to get what she wanted.

Kimmy told Amy to roll over. Amy smiled, showing teeth. “Why, what are you going to do, Kimmy?”

Kimmy brought the belt down across Amy’s bare stomach with a quick snap. Amy yelped and jumped, bringing up her knees and twisting to move her stomach away from another sting. “Ow,” she exclaimed, laughing. “Not even a warning, Kimmy? You’re cruel.”

“You’re the cruel one,” Kimmy said. “Now roll over.”

Amy deserved punishment. But this punishment was contrived, theatrical; Amy deserved ruin. When Amy rolled to her stomach, her bare ass sticking up in the air, she bent her knees and brought her feet up like her feet would protect her ass from punishment. Kimmy told Devlin to hold Amy’s feet down.

Devlin took Amy’s ankles and guided her feet to the bed so her ass was exposed.

Amy said, “Now the party’s getting started.”

“This isn’t a party, Amy,” Kimmy said, looking at Amy’s narrow waist swaying out to her generous womanly hips. Teenage boys would swoon when they saw Amy walk the halls of Dalton High. She brought the belt down on Amy’s bare ass and Amy gasped a whisking sound that slowed to a breathy chuckle in the wake of the snap’s echo. A pink swath bloomed on Amy’s perfect ass. Amy writhed in sexual frustration.

Lust spread in the room. Bringing the belt down on Amy’s ass had ignited something. Devlin’s bedroom was a salon of sexual endeavor. A place where things such as this were meant to occur. Events such as this were the reason this bedroom existed. All three of them breathed deeper and slower. All of them had switches flipped in their head that went from on-off; lusty intent now burned in all of them. Kimmy could feel it strongest because it shouldn’t exist within her at all. Nothing but chaste regret should shine in her heart after the weekend past.

The burn of shame flared on her cheeks. The two people in this room ruined her life. It took them ten years to do it, but this event began the night they invited her to Devlin’s place so they could scare timid Kimmy Chang into running home to hide from the wicked world. The promised job had been a farce. The promised parlay of her position at Stone Senior to Stone Junior for more pay and power was likely a farce as well. Soon she would have no job, no marriage. She’d been tricked into humiliating and betraying her husband. She’d corrupted a good friend, disappointed her niece, embarrassed her father, lost to her sister, and there was a good chance she would go to prison for at least eighteen months. Who would look after her baby while she was away? Would Josh even talk to her ever again?

She bent at the waist so she could speak near Amy’s ear. “You’re going to wish I ran away today, Amy. You’re going to wish you could only bully me like you used to.”

Amy harrumphed, still smiling. “I never bullied you, Kimmy.”

Kimmy looked at Devlin, stooped at the foot of the bed, his large hands gathering Amy’s thin ankles together. “Spread her legs for me.”

What, or who, could've inspired it?

Bill F Protagoras

You are evil. You have been plotting all along! You should consider writing books for a living.

CSH

Yay... I had my suspicions... my jubilation is mainly for the length. Shush, Devlin not everything is about your deformation...

Bill F Protagoras

Thanks KT!

Andrew Mellein

Yes, or the place of all the demons... or placing the emphasis on the Great God Pan... the inchoate unfettered savagery and wildness of nature (He who lurks playing his pipes in the background at the Gates of Dawn in "Wind in the Willows"). The antithesis of Apollo's civilized order. I forgot to mention Pan's horns and cleft feet 'appropriated' by those shifty, light-fingered Christian missionaries. Nick anything that isn't nailed down them lot!

Bill F Protagoras

Wow, what a well-written passage. I love it!

KT Morrison

We're on the home stretch for the series. This is the last book (but it will be long).

KT Morrison

I thought it was a suitable Devlin line—thanks for noting it, ha ha!

KT Morrison

Pandemonium as the title: It's literal meaning, as I understand, is 'demons everywhere' or 'all are demons'. Something of that nature!

KT Morrison

Maybe she even told Devlin to get Rumble to punch Josh in the stomach and steal his jacket, back in high school. Oh wow, I wish I was that devious to see that coming four years ago when I started this. That would be ripe!

KT Morrison

That would be amazing! karina the whole damn time!

KT Morrison

They are, or were, the Waters and Josh's shame, one way or another, nearly drowned him in a lake... The greater irony being that now high school imps seek to drown reborn Kimmy Chang in frivolity and joyless bullying which for them has all the significance of a lark. Kimmy is a joke, a toy, an outcast homeless waif, an easy mark for their vile inventions. It is irrelevant if Amy and Devlin act with concerted cruel intention, or clownishly jostle her with roguish rivalry to commit herself to their fellowship of two-faced bonami. Beware Kimmy your character, YOUR daimon alone should control your fate...

Bill F Protagoras

🤣 I keep coming back here for the next chapter! I wonder how many chapters are left in this book?

Andrew Mellein

"Devlin put a hand over his heart, furrowing his brows with sympathy as though she were a feisty kitten before an ill-tempered pit bull. “Oh, Kimmy. No one laughs at me." "Devlin chuckled. “This pig, as you call me, granted all your life’s wishes. It didn’t come free, you had to pay a toll.” "You’re swearing to yourself how you hate me and I disgust you and you’ll never be with me again, but soon, soon you’ll get that ache deep inside you, and bit by bit you’ll talk yourself back into my bed because you’ve got a secret spot about ten-inches deep in that sweet pussy of yours that I love so much, and I’m the only man who can touch it, I’m the only man who can fill you all the way up and explore your tenderest territory, make you squeal and squirt and—" 'The only man,' your humility is an object lesson to us all, Devlin. Go ahead, Devlin, jerk yourself off with her wondrous cunny until the ponderous weight of ennui makes you shove her aside with disgust! No fun any more! Netoromanza. Then when Josh comes back from Rome to their alienated home Kimmy renews the fiction that she planted her panties as part of her game with him. Now in this future antechamber to hell Devlin tries to reintroduce Kimmy into the game she has actually never played with him and Amy before... she must be painfully aware that they are playing with her now. She must realize that if she plays along with their farce she will be on the team which conspired against her marriage and her very identity! She will be shamelessly or shamefully compromised... backsliding into the deepest infamy condemned to abandon all hope. To live all year long every lengthy year where shades of humanity chirp disconsolately like bats in cavernous obscurity. A slave... She 'will' indeed belong to Devlin. Lucky girl. She too will be careless of consequences or outcomes.

Bill F Protagoras

“O wad some pow’r the giftie gie us to see oursels as ithers see us!” Robert Burns "To A Louse, On Seeing One on a Lady's Bonnet at Church."

Bill F Protagoras

Kimmy just a tart, the boss's bit of fluff. Reductivism!

Bill F Protagoras

“I hired you for fun. I hired you because I knew you could do the job I wanted you to do, but I also hired you—yes—to fuck around with Josh’s head.” So Kimmy was hired for a hardly effusive degree of competence wedged between fun varieties of sexual deviance that Devlin picked for his own narcissistic pleasure. Her own ecstasy possibly merely being a valuable affirmation of his virility, vanity and superiority. Yet this was still framed by Devlin's weary excuse that they only got what they had wanted all along... as welcome to them as mother's milk! As my mother would have devastatingly concluded... He is neither use nor ornament. Condemnation clad in levity.

Bill F Protagoras

JL, I like many theories you offer... as for the losing interest ploy, having reread the early books many times, and recently, I see nothing compelling to support his claim... I think he is playing hard to get having enough gumption to try (belatedly, I reckon) to maintain his cover of detached notch counting Don Juan! I think he might have an inkling that the verbal buttering up and flattery he uses on Kimmy may have a perturbing basis in fact... she is intelligent and formidable. He seems to be vacillating an awful lot lately, as Kimmy has remarked. Cracks are beginning to show in his facade. The affectation of teamwork instead of delegation (ordering the staff to do the work!) robs him of protagonism. Self-deception is his defining characteristic as far as I can see. But it's difficult to corroborate what, if anything, goes on behind his phallocentricity, and hedonistic underestimation of his flesh dolls. And, clearly his (capitalist) leisure class and conspicuous wealth pretentions. In other words, I'm patiently awaiting further information from the horse's dentally hygienic mouth...

Bill F Protagoras

For Kimmy, I believe it was a woman using the paternity of her child as a vital piece in an erotic bawd game. In which it turns out the putative 'real' father of said child served in her tachycardia inducing first move as a pawn sacrifice! Or so unintended circumstances gave the impression! At the time she found it irresistibly arousing... Although it may not have been the sole reason for her crazed sweaty obsession with drubbin' the nubbin!

Bill F Protagoras

There has to be more to the money and what the father has planned. It’s not something he’s just going to forget about. I can definitely see a scenario where he uses it as leverage on Kimmy. Maybe he was willing to sweep it under the rug and quietly fire her, but given he’s about to find out his son is leaving to start his own company- which may or may not be competition for him - he might use the money to force Kimmy to be the “mole” in Devlin’s operation. That would force her to remain working with Devlin, which she’d have a hard time explaining to Josh in a way he’d understand and accept. Could Josh show up? Hey, it’s possible, but I’d find it unlikely given his mindset at the moment. He’s aware Kimmy is up to something still with Devlin, even if Devlin (or Amy) were taunting him still to get him to show up, it just feels like he’s done with it all, and it won’t work. Plus, I do think Devlin is listening to Kimmy vis a vis Josh, and he has no idea there is any trouble between her and Josh. Someone brought up the idea that Devlin loves Kimmy, which is an interesting idea. I don’t think it’s love, I don’t see him capable of that, but I do agree he has genuine feelings that he’s found the perfect woman and relationship for him. So, that’s another reason I doubt he’s actually scheming behind her back right now, with Amy, Glenn, Josh, his father or anyone else. I think he’s fully on board with the plan as she described, and brought Amy to her here as a “gift.” Another interesting comment Devlin made that i didn’t see anyone comment on was that at certain points through this he began to lose interest, and it was really Kimmy who pushed things forward. I don’t remember if those points were noticeable in prior books, it always felt like he was pushing Kimmy and Josh forward, so perhaps it’s just BS. But maybe in those early days, if Kimmy didn’t respond to his advances, he would have just moved on easily.

JL23

Yes! I think something happened that we were not privy to! I think it was mentioned as disgustingly depraved! What could that be?

Andrew Mellein

Remember Kimmy had the good sense not to carry out her plan to show Josh the video of herself coning Devlin into wearing her panties and a long insulting fantasy of a subjugated Josh playing househusband and nursemaid, while she fulfilled Devlin's every sordid quim! I beg your pardons... I meant whim! There may even have been vile mechanical sexuality involved! That was before Josh plummeted into the icy lake!

Bill F Protagoras

Bill is right, Andrew, great observation. I mean, one could say what happened to Josh is pandemonium, but I get the feeling you're right. It probably references what's coming up based on Kimmy's decision to stay so she can wail on Amy. Or perhaps it's what follows after this scene is done since Sr. hasn't dropped the axe on Kimmy. Yet. Who knows, maybe it devolves into a lust fueled sex fest since Kimmy noted the atmosphere in the room changed... And then Josh knocks on the door.

L_S87

"MY Kimmy. OUR secret..." What's next, OUR offspring!

Bill F Protagoras

"And after that party you were gonna go home and you were gonna make cat baskets for a bunch of lisping cat daddies with disposable income." A bit of disdainful homophobia which shouldn't pass unremarked... Or, to be fair he might have something against overly loquacious pet-owning villains with speech impediments (the villains not the pets).

Bill F Protagoras

My mind is blocked by that tenebrous hall in Milton's poem! Sorry! Too many sprawling demons !

Bill F Protagoras

Excellent observation, Andrew, in the last two sentences. The rest I try not to speculate...

Bill F Protagoras

I agree with much you say but not your minimizing Josh's mixed feelings, which seems an important mistake as his doubt and skepticism is what kept him from fully realizing he was being cuckolded for all those books... he wanted to believe his wife loved him. Then he was seduced into masochistic fantasy by his wife who is also ashamed of her own behaviour, but addicted to her OWN fulfilled fantasy. Both of them were rocked back on their heels that day even Kimmy who had surrendered herself to her own absurd fantasy of involving Josh while ridiculously kidding herself that she could obtain his absolution as a special offer or free gift. The fallout had Kimmy talking incoherently and unable to express affection by any other means than sex... the crisis continues in the wreckage...

Bill F Protagoras

Is this all predicated on Devlin sticking his dick in Kimmy's cunny? Because Kimmy wailing of Amy is alright with me. It helps relieve Kimmy's sadism (LOL) But I'm starting to think something major is going to happen. And it might break up Devlin's, Amy's, and Kimmy's get together! I just remember the title is called Pandemonium. I could be wrong. But you don't label your book that unless all hell break loose in the final chapters.

Andrew Mellein

Why do I think something big is going to come down? Sure Josh had his near death experience but the title of this book is: Pandemonium. Maybe Josh or the police (via. Devlin's daddy) bust into the place? And all hell breaks loose!

Andrew Mellein

I dont want you guys to be right, but all the evidence says you are. Sure, Kimmy has plenty of flashes of "doing the right thing" and the way she treated Josh after his near death shows how much compassion and love she's capable of expressing in a "normal" fashion, even if the reason for the circumstances were far from it. Her desire to stay here, even against her better judgment and all the logical reasons she lists for why she shouldn't, shows who, at least in part, she enjoys being. Refusing to let Amy taunt her and win may very well let her win anyway given where this seems to be heading, but Kimmy likes the power of control and the lust that comes with it. Her refusal to run away has the consequence of her running away from her own marriage and what she knows is good for it. I do wonder how this plays out and how she approaches Josh afterwards. A part of me wonders if she chooses to consign herself to this life and let's Josh go, knowing that's what's best for him. Or if Josh makes that choice himself. A lot of this is predicated on Josh's knowledge of the situation. Do we get another panty scenario? A video of Kimmy spanking Amy? That would be interesting. Here you go, Josh. Your wife. The Prada wearing villainess.

L_S87

Re evil Jason Robards. I've long since become a sucker for the 'tomorrow is another day' refrain... a home remedy to 'the pushing the same boulder up the same hill everyday' nightmare!

Bill F Protagoras

The compressed time perspective is always waiting to mess with our heads. And I like to think of it as giving our (anti)heroine room to play.

CSH

Antiheroes are a pretty varied bunch... there are picaresque extremes like Huck Finn, GM Fraser's Flashman, epic rogues like Thersites and his aristo nemesis our Odysseus himself, there is the ronin Yojimbo and his western avatar Eastwood's Man With No Name, there are the existentialists like in Camus' The Stranger, there is Neal Stephenson's magnificent picaresque Eliza, who starts out as an odalisque, from his mock epic real science historic fiction Baroque Cycle! There's Becky Sharpe from Vanity Fair another triumphant slut! Fanny Hill! The American TV series mentioned are frequently plagued by the ghostly paradigms of the very fossilized morality Antiheroics challenges. The USA's cunning much vaunted Constitution is a frail picket fence to hide the guilt of history behind. In the rest of the the world there's always turning the blind eye, Panglos's 'Everything is for the best in this the best of all possible worlds', Sisyphus in Tartaros, or Herakles' Augean Stables solution to the accumulated shit of history. But for me in the end there's always the Antihero or her sibling the trickster eg Bugs Bunny! So there's still a margin for Kimmy! PS I always liked Jason Robards, occasional sower of dragon's teeth in Panglos's garden! PPS Maybe Josh is Kimmy's Jiminy Cricket! PPPS Also, C, our dark lady only has, at the most, five months on her back (see Karma Sutra), lets give her some space to breathe! Trauma, Drama, Dream!

Bill F Protagoras

LS, I also don’t see Josh as asking to watch again. His shame outweighed his kink, seeing that he ended up almost dying in a freezing lake. Kimmy with Devlin is a non-starter for him now, especially after Devlin’s comment on his not being able to father a child, as well as Kimmy’s questionable pregnancy. If it had been someone else, maybe, but there’s no way he’ll go there again. He was completely repulsed, and even more ashamed about being turned on by it. Sadly, IMO, he needs to move on and start new with a new woman.

Kat

I offer my full support to evil Kimmy the antihero. But she needs to get over the guilt. You remember the scene in High Crimes and Misdemeanors where Woody Allen’s character keeps telling Jason Robards character that he needs to jazz up the murder scenario with the villain confessing and turning himself in? the Robards character responds - that’s the Hollywood ending, in my story, he is overcome with guilt but then he wakes up one morning and he gets over it. He rationalizes it so he can go on living. Kimmy needs to accept who she really is.,

CSH

Seaky KT, Sneaky.

CSH

Yes, Karina! The Secret Evil Vixen!

CSH

I think you are right that Kimmy is KT’s antiheroine but depending on how the series ends do you think it’s possible she turns into a villain?Especially if she gets away unscathed I.e. everything she bragged lustily she would do to Devlin about Josh happens. Also she serves no jail time. Moves up in the company etc. The reason being most of those tv male characters ended up paying an ultimate price in the end. I don’t know?

Andrew Mellein

Unless I am remembering it wrong, mixed feelings aside, he was initially quite turned on while watching them. Only towards the end did it turn sour. The biggest problem he had with it all was the betrayal that had led to it. I thought his whole 'accident' was him running away out of shame from the possibility of everyone knowing about what had happened. Not what his wife did, everyone seemed to already suspect that she had an affair, but rather his own involvement in it. I saw it as his shame at his own arousal from it. Also it's not like this kink doesn't come with negative feelings associated. Sometimes more intense the situation, more intense are all the related feelings, negative ones included. But he seems pretty checked out now, so who knows what's on his mind.

Jack Dawson

I just realized Kimmy is an antihero! An angry young woman to outrage societal norms and challenge worn out moral precepts! Outmatching the British Angry Young Men! Pushing through the historic literary ranks of antihero characters with dicks and the more recently predominant TV series dick antiheroes! Tony Soprano, Jack Bauer, Gregory House, Walter White, Don Draper, Marty Byrde, Nucky Thompson and Jax Teller... some of them are cunts but most of them are more ladies men than ladyboys... That's why I unashamedly support Kimmy even though the odds are stacked against her! As my Batman T Shirt proudly states 'I Like Girls Who Like It Rough!' Harley Quinn brazenly brandishing a hefty snub nosed revolver, while the tight-lipped Dark Knight subjects her to his steely gaze. Or might be doin' a spot of objectivisin'! Devlin with that outdated George Reeves pose he strikes is begging for strapping Kimmy to take him down a peg or two! Actually Mrs Byrde was a bit of a cheating ballbreaker when she wasn't milking them dry, a bit of an anti hero herself. The female population of Ozark in general was not to be sniffed at, if not downright scary.

Bill F Protagoras

HoHoHo!

Bill F Protagoras

Loads... just seeing the previous books through the lense of the future we now know, it's surprising how much KT paved the way. Mainly just powering through gives a new perspective to the page turning time scale that we lose when we are riding KT's creative crest of the wave. Also we may feel the slightest hint of KT retracing her steps as she once confessed to wanting to do. But that could be reader speculation... or just Bill the Headcase.

Bill F Protagoras

A wit as ready as a Chaucer or a Shakeshaft, Andrew!

Bill F Protagoras

Bill your rereading Devil in the Waters did you pick up any new insights you missed the first time reading it?

Andrew Mellein

Kimmy belongs to the streets!

Andrew Mellein

It was Karina! The author of all Josh's pain! (LOL!)

Andrew Mellein

A swingeing final point, Pete... my riposte to it is, as it was to CSH... WE ALL SAW HOW WELL JOSH WATCHING DEVLlN FUCK KIMMY WORKED OUT THAT TIME, even Kimmy seemed TRIGGERED by THAT experience. I don't know, but perhaps they realized that a fantasy is different from its enactment. Although I don't think that repeating something and expecting a different result is a sign of madness, I do think repeating an experience that ended in escalating disaster is unadvisable, wrong-headed, or as some uncouth folk might put it fucking stupid. I apologise for the capitals, it seems like shouting... I would prefer italics THEY only seem sarcastic. I mean the fallout is yet to reach its fictional half-life!

Bill F Protagoras

Good to see someone's paying attention! L_S.

Bill F Protagoras

Devlin didn't say anything despite his constant drooling admiration of her outfits so I presumed he had finagled her some kind of business expenses. However, it did give me pause when she condescendingly and possibly unintentionally cruelly turned Josh into Mini-He (Devlinkins). I suppose she wanted her 'boy' to look his best... At least she didn't put some some spit on a hanky to clean a smudge of dirt off his cheek!

Bill F Protagoras

Loved the inverted reference to Lot's wife!

Bill F Protagoras

I did wonder. I thought credit cards.

Tracey52

And making fun of Josh's dick was at the reunion, and kimmy was present for that. So, yeah who sent the texts? Interesting...

Chris K

My greatest fear was someone beating me to the punch and asking me how Kimmy could afford such extravagances when she's only been working for a few months! I thought for sure someone would ask me about that...

KT Morrison

Best thing Josh should do is cut his losses. Anything will Kimmy is a lost cause. She is not good for him. She is not good enough for him. If he was she would have never started this with Devlin. The most hated person in the entire world to him. She wouldn't have lied and manipulated and humiliated him behind his back. It is a sad thing especially when he tries to unalive himself because of this. With all of that she still with Devlin playing his games. Loving it ..Josh be damned. Josh just needs to send the divorce paper .. split the accounts and cancel the CC and anything that is attached to Kimmy. Don't look back as he will turn till a pillar of salt! It is a wrap for the Waters marriage and it should . She doesn't respect him or I really doubt she is in love with him. He just an idea but it has run it's course!

Mike Monroe

'Cos watching them worked out so well the last time, ey, C?

Bill F Protagoras

Or more lies on top of the others... how will we ever know! That was my point... If there's a digital recording could we send it to forensics? Also what's the point of denying ridiculing Josh's penis... Kimmy was there!

Bill F Protagoras

"An indignant shift adjusted her stomach, thinking how she shared such intimacy with the man her husband hated. The secret they held together was a lie. That was something she could hold onto for strength, remind herself she wasn’t as bad as Devlin and Amy believed." No as bad! What a comfort!

Bill F Protagoras

CSH, I think Kimmy is attached to Devlin, too. Not so much love, but an attachment. I don’t think either of these people understands what love is. She got very upset when she assumed that it was Devlin who had sex with Amy. It was more than just disgust, she was super jealous. She also felt badly (briefly) for him after Josh hit him with the chair, and he was on the floor bleeding. She can say she hates him all she wants, but it’s more than just his equipment. I think he’s her perfect man, in so many ways.

Kat

In the end will Kimmy's greatest achievement be trampling faithful Josh's love into dust... if she'd been really trying to do it... she couldn't've done better. Amor vincit omnia! Get thee to a nunnery!

Bill F Protagoras

I don't see Josh asking to watch again. He may ask if she's been with Devlin, as he's done that before, but he was disgusted by her response, not turned on by it. This is someone who has been violently, physically ill after watching them together, and not the first time he's had that reaction. Add in walking to his own death while running away from this exact scenario? I'm not saying it can't happen, anything can happen if it's written that way. I'm only saying we have a mountain of evidence that says this isn't what Josh wants. Fantasy, sure... reality? No.

L_S87

It only makes it better she is married... Also abuse of power etc.

Bill F Protagoras

How do you think she pays for all the clothes she lashes out on for herself et al? In Sinner Devlin guesses how much her new shoes cost.

Bill F Protagoras

It's hard for even me, as a reader, to be clear about Josh's wishes without resorting to inference. One of Josh's most consistent traits has been the stark absence of many clear and direct requests. Other than some requests for time alone, the only recent one I recall was him asking Kimmy to fuck Devlin.

Pete

I couldn't give a tinker's toss whose child it is. If Kimmy is going to continue manipulating Josh in the same vein it will remove all the tension for me and I will languish away in all the soap.

Bill F Protagoras

Besotted seems a good description. I can live with that.

CSH

Hey all, Amy denied sending some of the texts but admitted to making fun of Josh’s dick. A partial confession is both sneaky and intriguing. Did Amy really do the stuff Devlin accused her of? Maybe we are about to find out.

CSH

That’s the silliest idea ever, I think. That it takes a big one to get a woman pregnant, I mean. Typical for Devlin, who it turns out, is something of a dim bulb after all. And Kimmy tells herself she is smarter than Devlin and Amy. She is but crafty and smart aren’t the same thing. Devlin would probably never make the clumsy blunder of straight embezzlement. On the pregnancy I suspect, that, for the moment, she’s going to lie to both men, tell them what each wants to hear. she will then likely use the “it’s not your child” line on each of them when she is mad at them and wants to hurt them.

CSH

I always said Josh was better suited for Karina.

Andrew Mellein

I think besotted... unless she joins him in the delusion it is not love. If she does... it could be an ending, but one that KT will have to work wonders to convince me. The embezzlement is not totally out of left field... I have been reading the book again. I also have my own furthering a solution fantasy fantasy.

Bill F Protagoras

And if Josh still really cared about KImmy and his marriage. He would have never let her work for Devlin. And after the finding out about the affair gave her an ultimatum- the job or their marriage. Hell he should have a tracker on her 24/7 and if pops up at Devlin's apartment (like now) he should head out there or call her up. But I kinda think Kimmy getting pregnant again made him check out of this marriage.

Andrew Mellein

Maybe if they try to put in her jail. She can just tell Devlin Sr. she is pregnant with his grandkid. The fact that she is married woman at that point be damned.

Andrew Mellein

C, I presume the first paragraph was not directed at me as my opinion has always been what Josh doesn't know can't hurt him. As for your consistent faith in Josh's staunch resistance to being cuckolded by Devlin being overcome I beg to differ. I also don't believe she would now have that much disrespect for Josh's wishes.

Bill F Protagoras

Yeah, okay. I can see your point. Still, I find the whole embezzlement issue puzzling. It came from nowhere out of left field. And she did it to buy Josh a suit? Anyway, I just dont buy that we see her disbarred and a convict. Probably Dad gets her to betray Devlin. Dad doesnt want sonny in jail, I suspect. Just under his thumb. Personally, I think Devlin is in love with Kimmy. Strangely enough.

CSH

It won't be long, I think. That's Josh's favorite drug, after all. He can't get enough!

Pete

Because it means she has been soberly reflecting how deep a hole she's dug herself into... also she does have some leverage. I'm sure it's pretty obvious to you. Not to mention legal knowledge she might have up her sleeve client privilege be damned!

Bill F Protagoras

I honestly don’t even think it matters who sent Josh the texts and the pictures. It probably never really did, beyond being a mystery to solve. I really hate agreeing with Devlin and Amy, but on this they’re right. Kimmy (and Josh) had plenty of opportunities to go down a different road, no matter the manipulation from outside entities. They both chose not to, and in many ways are still choosing not to. That’s on them, not Devlin or Amy. Kimmy can blame everything on Devlin and Amy plotting to corrupt her for 10 years, but the bottom line is she wanted to be corrupted, for whatever reason. Same with Josh, he could have confronted Kimmy, or Devlin, or both, with his suspicions sooner. Could have let Kimmy know what she now knows, that he wants no part of what she and Devlin cooked up. But he didn’t, for many reasons. Including because a part of him liked it. So yes, Devlin and/or Amy may have manipulated them both through various means, but the ultimate architects of the apparent destruction of their marriage are really, Josh and Kimmy. We can argue percentage of blame, but it’s really them that allowed all this to happen.

JL23

A better question might be who wasn't lying and when?

Bill F Protagoras

I don't think Kimmy masturbated frenetically because she imagined it would be a humiliation for Josh to take care of Devlin's child and stay a cuckold... I do however believe that what would be her greatest betrayal of Josh and their love... would be to have fallen for Devlin's insinuation that the miscarriage was due to his inferior dick size... and to believe that Devlin's superior size would ensure conception. If under those circumstances the baby is Devlin's, let him look after it, though it goes against the grain for me to suggest it!

Bill F Protagoras

I’d make a few points. The obsession with honesty is the most peculiar double edged sword ever created. Given that Josh might have just tried to off himself, which is worse, screwing Amy and Devlin or going home and telling Josh all the details? Most cultures would be fine with people having their fun as long as they are then discreet about it. Why in God’s name would she even consider telling Josh? And how else would he know? Kimmy handles her liquor much better than Josh. It’s Devlin”s giant schlong she can’t stop injecting into herself. Oh and speaking of self-destructive addictions, how long till Josh starts asking Kimmy if she’s still going to have sex with Devlin and how long after that till he asks to watch again?

CSH

If Josh won't embrace her dark side, but Devlin will, arguably he's a better partner for her. In a sense , DITW has been a tale of Devlin not only fucking Kimmy better than Josh, but of embracing and appreciating all parts of her better. That's no shade on Josh, as he's been on the rough receiving end of her dark pleasures. But Devlin clearly loves Kimmy's intelligence, skill, fashion, strength, her libido, and apparently all aspects of her sadistic and dark side. Arguably, there's no character in the series that appreciates all aspects of Kimmy as consistently and passionately as Devlin.

Pete

Why?

CSH

But was Amy lying?

CSH

Kat, if KT had had Kimmy shrug off the accumulated burden of betrayal, addiction and sins against Josh in a matter of days just because 'fate' gave her a shocking wake up call I would be unconvinced. Readers by the nature of the beast / the novel share in the misfortune and mistakes of their favourite characters. Even if Josh divorced Kimmy that wouldn't mean their love was over. Devlin is the cause of the rift between them, probably an insuperable obstacle as far as Josh is concerned. He certainly seems so to me. An alcoholic is always addicted to possession by the demon. The solution is to not suffer under it's thumb, but by unceasing determination to put Satan behind you. That is Kimmy's problem... I notice with amusement that Josh's overindulgence in John Barleycorn is quite rightly considered inadvisable, yet as far as I know no-one has remarked on the cliché that Devlin started getting Kimmy hooked on strong top shelf liquor to get her in the sack!

Bill F Protagoras

I don’t know if Kimmy can find a therapist skilled enough to help her. She’s passed the point of no return now.

Kat

LS, I also wish she’d just beat the crap out of Amy, and then leave, but we know it’s not going to go that way. As soon as Devlin unzips his pants, and Kimmy sees how turned on he is, she won’t be able to resist putting on a show for Amy. She’s going to regret this, even though the regret will also be a turn on for her.

Kat

I think you’re right, JL. I just wish it would be Josh to let her go on his own.

Kat

And I thought the turning point of the book was the afternoon at The Hazelton! I think what happens here will be the defining moment in the story. Kimmy clearly can’t go back to the way things were with Josh. She’s probably going to lose Hyun, too. IMO, Hyun is going to be more upset about her being with Amy than with Devlin. She needs the wickedness in her life, it’s what she’s become. If two days after seeing her husband in the hospital, after a near death experience, (one that she believes she caused with her actions), isn’t enough to stop her from committing more sins, than nothing will. I wanted a HEA ending, or some modicum of one, but that can’t happen if Kimmy goes all the way here with Devlin. She needs to pack up her stuff and move out. At this point, she doesn’t have many options left, so she’s succumbing to her lust, per usual. There’s no way Josh doesn’t hear about this. And if he does, I hope he has the strength to say goodbye to her, and move on, as well.

Kat

😆

Kat

The fact that Kimmy has already figured out her approximate jail sentence has, paradoxically, cheered me up.

Bill F Protagoras

I hate it when you write so terribly well... but it is what I'm here for.

Bill F Protagoras

“Don’t try to turn the tables on me, Devlin. I’m not stupid.” Up for debate... a moot point!

Bill F Protagoras

"Kimmy could feel it strongest because it shouldn’t exist within her at all. Nothing but chaste regret should shine in her heart after the weekend past." Shoulda, coulda, woulda!

Bill F Protagoras

"Devlin’s bedroom was a salon of sexual endeavor. A place where things such as this were meant to occur. Events such as this were the reason this bedroom existed." The salon of the 21st Century?

Bill F Protagoras

"Amy deserved punishment. But this punishment was contrived, theatrical;"

Bill F Protagoras

"Devlin shook his head no. “It’s our secret.”

Bill F Protagoras

“What kind of woman would leave the man she married because his penis was smaller than a potential lover’s? That would be insane.” “I didn’t leave him because of that.”

Bill F Protagoras

“If you love him it wouldn’t matter.” Out of the mouths of babes... and children.

Bill F Protagoras

"They’d spent a lot of time in here doing terrible things. This was nothing new."

Bill F Protagoras

“There’s nothing to punish me for. I didn’t do anything.”

Bill F Protagoras

Devlin the philanthropist. Kimmy the clueless broad. "La donna è mobile Qual piuma al vento."

Bill F Protagoras

Wonderfully crafted chapter! Especially in how skillfully tension is built on two parallel tracks: whether Kimmy will punish Amy, and whether the scene will turn sexual. The former felt like a rubber band gradually being pulled further and further back as Amy lies to each successive query from Kimmy. And in contrast, the latter felt more like a fuse to a keg of dynamite suddenly ignited by Kimmy's first hard strike with the belt. I envision that each successive strike will exponentially increase the speed of that fuse-bound flame toward its target, all the while adding more and more powder to the keg!

Pete

“You were the one who fucked me in Cayman while Josh sat at the house waiting for you to come back. Was that juvenile? You don’t get to pick and choose. You don’t get to align everything in your favor when you’ve been complicit from day one.”

Bill F Protagoras

“I hired you for fun. I hired you because I knew you could do the job I wanted you to do, but I also hired you—yes—to fuck around with Josh’s head.”

Bill F Protagoras

Yeah, whatever happens from here in this bedroom, I just can’t see how Kimmy walks out still thinking she can save her marriage to Josh. Or even that she should want to. There is still a chance there aren’t any significant consequences to her stealing the money; maybe she’ll actually be able to walk away from Stone Brokerage with Devlin free and clear somehow and they can start their company. Maybe that emboldens her again that she’s invincible, and she continues to try and convince Josh to embrace the dark she wants with her. But, right now she fears the possibility that no matter what he says, that Josh jumped off the dock because of what she did to him. And because of what she wanted for their life moving forward. If she still wants that life, or can’t keep herself from wanting it, then you would think her only course of action would be to untether herself from Josh, to free him from Devlin, Amy and herself. She’s the only one who can actually do it, I don’t think Josh will himself. He’ll always hang onto hope. She could use that manipulate him into saying, but that would truly make her as bad as Devlin. I just feel like whatever happens with the money, we’re leading to a scenario where Kimmy realizes the only thing she can offer the man she loves is freedom…from her.

JL23

One swallow does not make a spring. Nor one dead leaf a Fall.

Bill F Protagoras

Dare I say that this chapter more than any other. Makes me think that this series is not going to have a HEA for Josh and Kimmy. The dark cuckold tag I think is accurate for this series. It's still possible for a HEA but I am starting to doubt it.

Andrew Mellein

As much as Kimmy denied it throughout the entire series. I think she has the hots for Devlin and maybe even "Loves" him a little.

Andrew Mellein

JL23- And also Kimmy admitted to Josh she enjoyed her affair with Devlin. Of course she's going to jump into bed again with him. She attracted to that piece of meat between his legs. But I want her to come to an empty house with all of Josh's things gone!

Andrew Mellein

JL and L- there’s much insight in your comments above. I hadn't made that connection with the reason for the masturbation while watching the video and now think you got it exactly right. She’s been lying to herself a lot. Maybe now she begins to accept that she wants Devlin and what he offers. Kimmy will likely try to keep Josh hooked, but given the extreme nature of his reactions, it is possible she may eventually decide she has to cut him loose if she wants him to live with a modicum of self respect or even remain alive at all. I’m not a fan of the stealing aspect of this, but maybe it’s just a way to signify her rapid corruption and embrace of Devlin’s values over those she seemed to share with Josh. She has betrayed Josh’s trust. She stole from her employing company. She promised Devlin’s dad she would betray Devlin. She lied to Hyun. She isn’t better than anybody here. And yet she is really turned on by it all. Nicely done, isn’t it?

CSH

I kinda want her to wail on Amy and then leave. I love her inner monologue where she knows she has no one to turn to after this. Devlin's motivational conversation to Kimmy reminded me of Kimmy's conversation to Josh after the hotel room. The "I will give you everything" speech. Devlin really rubbed off on her.

Andrew Mellein

If you think about it. KImmy has alienated everyone ( family, friends, loved ones) around her . Except Hyun (But that's coming). She does need some form of help. Josh totally doesn't need her. Every single girl in his office was checking him out. I predict the next book will be Josh and Kimmy separated possibly divorced. And maybe see them with new people in their lives.

Andrew Mellein

I kinda of think Josh should have thrown her out of the house the moment he saw her in the hotel with Devlin. I don't understand why he doesn't get a divorce lawyer. Once a cheater always a cheater. Karina has her number. And any road with Devlin leads nowhere. Unless she is carrying his kid that is. I always figured there was going to be a Kimmy-Amy- Devlin reunion. I kinda hope the police break down the door and arrest Kimmy for theft. Or Josh (finally mans up) goes to Devlins apartment knocks Devlin out in the middle of post coital sex and tells Kimmy it's over. But I dont think that's going to happen (LOL!)

Andrew Mellein

This wasn't what I really wanted to happen. I was hoping Josh's near death would be enough motivation to resist. But you're right, this is true to form for Kimmy. Josh doesn't want this, but she does, and so she let's her lust free. Sure, she gives all sorts of equivocations, but she's still doing it. She could still pull back after she's done with Amy, but I don't think she will. It will be interesting to see what she comes home to.

L_S87

She's clinging to the idea that Devlin is not really the father of the baby, that she wouldn't humiliate Josh in the way she portrayed to Devlin, so therefore she still has something over him. But you are right, I think she won't admit it, but deep down, she wants what she told Devlin to actually happen. Maybe not exactly in the way she painted it to him, where Josh was totally subjugated and humiliated in front of Devlin, but she absolutely is turned on by the thought she could convince Josh to raise Devlin's baby. She may be coming to terms with being bad, and accepting it, but she still wants to cling to shreds of evidence she's not.

JL23

I think Amy will leave a changed woman!

Chris K

Yeah, I saw the end as her acknowledging that nothing is going to outweigh her lust. Josh is probably leaving her (and may have attempted to harm himself cause of her actions), her baby might not have him as it's father, her true friends want nothing to do with her, her family will be embarrassed and she may end up in jail. But, once you put her in that bedroom with Devlin, the lust is all that matters. She doesn't acknowledge it with happiness, but I think she is. The question is, what does she do after? That is why I want to see her next interaction with Josh, does she even try to save things, or does she give up, maybe cause she'll think that's best for Josh. She does still try to claim a level of superiority over Amy/Devlin, even as she's preparing to roll in the mud again with them. She's inclined to blame them all for this, for corrupting her, but as they said, she had so many outs from this she could have chosen herself. She still has outs, even now. But she's choosing not to use them. That's a conscious decision by her, no one else. She also clings to the idea the picture she painted Devlin last week was a lie, as something she can hold over him. But is it really a lie? Did she not really want that picture, even in the deep recesses of her mind? Devlin still could be the father, and she really wanted Josh to accept his paternity of the child without question. Maybe she didn't want the cruel, humiliating scenario she told Devlin, but I feel the idea of the baby being Devlin's, yet Josh staying with her and playing dad, was an incredible turn on for her, whether she ever admits it. It wasn't the lie to Devlin that cause her to masturbate over and over again to that video, it was the idea she could still make a scenario like that a reality.

JL23

Lol, its what I hoped would happen. I find her thought processes and her actions to be fully in character. Kimmy knows the danger, but does it anyway, because she kind of needs it. I really think she’s gonna wail on Amy. This was beautifully done, KT. Kimmy is definitely your most complex character, ever. there is a considerable portiion of self deception in there, as well. Like this: “ The secret they held together was a lie. That was something she could hold onto for strength, remind herself she wasn’t as bad as Devlin and Amy believed. ” The secret they hold together is not a lie. Objectively not so. Though it may not be of value. And how is she not as bad as they believe. I believe kimmy is in process of accepting herself as a bit of a sadist, and perhaps even, not a good person.? Those two do not necessarily go together of course.

CSH

Kimmy is a junkie who lies, cheats, steals and breaks the hearts of all who love her. I hope she gets professional help before she has a breakdown.

Steve McCarty

I kind of feel like she's giving in because she's convinced herself all that stuff is going to happen, so why not? She's going to jail, Josh is already done with her, whether she does this or not. Or that's what she's telling herself. So why not take this opportunity? Why not enjoy punishing Amy, even though she knows the lust being unleashed only leads one place. A place she promised Josh she wouldn't go. Yet if Josh is already gone... does the promise matter? This is the moment. She's given in, fallen to Amy's taunting, not left though she knows she should. Because a part of her wants all of this. I dont think all is lost, she could beat Amy senseless, drop the belt and walk out. As much as I want her to have that strength, to show Josh is more important than her lust, I don't think its going to happen. The instant she took that belt, she made her choice. The instant things get hotter and Devlin drops his pants, she's going to ignore the events of the past weekend to bury her pain and fear in lust. She even admitted such in noting she shouldn't even be here after Josh almost dying, because of her, yet her she is, feeling rampant desire, and giving in to it. If Josh looks at his phone tracking, does he pack his stuff and leave so when Kimmy comes home after this, she walks into emptiness? Something she has earned.

L_S87

This was sort of what I feared would happen. Kimmy convincing herself she could still get revenge, convincing herself she still wasn’t completely falling to Devlin and Amy’s level, that she could do this and emerge unscathed. But in the end, she’s pretty much falling for it: for Devlin’s seductive words, his plans, and to her dark sexual needs. She tries to convince herself (and us) that she isn’t…but the last part of the chapter she basically admits as much. She worries about going to jail, of alienating everyone she cared for, of Josh never speaking to her again…but it doesn’t pull her out of that room. And to be clear, if she wants to live that life, she’s absolutely entitled to. I don’t think Devlin is wrong, she was looking to him to bring it out of her. And even though she’s ashamed of it now, she still wants that life. Maybe even more than she ultimately wants Josh. I guess the rest of this story will answer that question. Her real plan was never to ruin Devlin for Josh. The real plan was always to have what Devlin was offering in a way that allowed her to keep Josh, and in a way that allowed Josh some measure of comfort that they were the real team, not her and Devlin. She’s aware that’s pretty much impossible now, yet here she still is. I personally find it kind of sad, and not exciting in any way. But I guess again it shows I don’t have the kind of mindset for this lifestyle for real.

JL23

Now this really IS getting interesting.
