DITW 15-2: Panic Attacks in Rome

That fucking picture.

The picture that swooped in from out of nowhere. No warning he would receive it, and no warning that the photo’s content could even be a possibility.

He could see it in his mind’s eye as he stared up at the ceiling in the hotel room he’d booked for Meyer’s birthday. He could see it with his eyes closed, too. So he lay sleepless and staring, hands behind his head, gawping at ghosts floating above him on the eggshell white ceiling cum movie screen while Meyer snored hard enough to swallow his own tongue. The the way things were. The way they were now. All that could have been. All that could be.

Kimmy Chang. Her name right in the newspaper. Print edition. Saturday special. Not Kimmy Waters. Kimmy Chang. Six-foot tall supermodel Kimmy Chang in a Santorini-blue satin dress, big V cutout on the chest, straps over lean shoulders, her little titties cupped in the shimmering blue bustier, the photographer’s light casting shadows in the cups and edges of her collarbones and long, swanlike neck. Hair pulled back. Her glistening skin. Pampered. She looked pampered.

And that fucking million-dollar smile?

He brought his knees together in a clamp and crunched his stomach against the existential pain coursing through his veins, his heart just a pulsatile pain machine, sending hurt-poison into every part of his being.

Why did it fucking hurt so much?

Because she was yours, dipshit. She was yours and now she’s not.

How bad would this night be without the benzo and the beer and the Irish good-stuff? Insufferable. Insupportable.

Five miles outside Cabo, ten o’clock at night, exhausted after an amazing day blatting across the baked landscape and he’s getting into his tent, ready for forty winks, but wanted to check his messages. What a mistake. A message from Steve.

The fucking man Kimmy was with in the picture. How? Like really, fucking how?

Thank god for Lorazepam. Thank god for tonight’s drinks. The hurt and dread were rarer now. And thank god for Meyer. Thank god for the times with Sophie when she’d stay with him and Meyer.

Sophie insinuated there were nights where Aunt Kimmy cried and closed herself in Hyun’s bedroom. It was clear Sophie didn’t want to spill the beans, that someone, probably Kimmy, had told Sophie not to talk about it. Kimmy was gone from Stone. She hadn’t lied about that.

Josh growled from sleepless frustration and whipped down the covers, laying bare-chested in the nighttime city light. His mind raced, but at least the fight or flight only simmered under the wonderful wooly weight of the benzo. His hand searched to the side table, looking for the familiar shape of his phone, Meyer sputtering away in the next bed over. Swiped open, right to screenshots he’d snapped of the texts with Kimmy from back in the day. Wonderful little snippets of things she’d texted him in her departure’s aftermath. Statements he’d often ponder.

The time he’d first heard Sophie drop a vague remark about her Aunt Kimmy crying, he’d texted Kimmy, and, not wanting to rat out his adorable little niece as a tattle-tale, he’d offered up the blanket reminder that no matter what had happened between them, he would always be there for her. He’d told her that if she ever needed help he would do whatever he could to make things right for her.

She’d texted him back.

Kimmy: Stay away, Josh. I hope it won’t be forever. But it should be for a while. I want to earn you back.

Yeah, right. She wanted to earn him back. Uh-huh.

One time she’d texted she was irredeemable. Another time she texted she wanted redemption.

And poor Sophie. Sophie told not to talk about Kimmy’s mental state, Kimmy with no job, all alone, then moved in with Hyun—just like he knew she would. Sophie saying cryptic things around her other-week men because she wanted reassurance from her dad and from her Uncle Josh that everything would be okay with her Aunt Kimmy. Then total radio silence from Kimmy. Sophie said Kimmy wasn’t living with Hyun anymore, she’d got an apartment downtown. He’d texted her. In those weeks, Kimmy had been a mess. Emotional and sensitive. Their text-based convos were sometimes heated. He could tell she was afraid. He encouraged her to get professional help, but he didn’t think she ever went.

Josh: I don’t want to find any happiness in your suffering.

Kimmy: I deserve it.

Then more radio silence. Longer. But who gave a fuck? By then he was in Rome and crushing it. At least for a while he was. Then came the times where it was difficult to swallow. He’d passed it off as an infection. Then he was home, and—hell, yeah—he dated.

“Fuck,” he sighed, wishing he could just sleep. Instead, he was huddled under the cover to block out the light of his phone so he wouldn’t disrupt Meyer’s snoring.

Yeah, that was what set it off. It wasn’t an infection, it was his whole body tightening with a fight-or-flight response. Smack dab in the middle of the day he’d have these attacks where his body was convinced fucking Michael Myers was tracking him down with a machete. He’d be at work shitting-his-pants afraid, hands shaking, guts twisting, but with no reason. The reason took some time to figure out. It wasn’t an irrational fear of fictional Michael Myers and his machete, it was Devlin Stone with his erect horse cock.

But that was still irrational.

And in time, he also came to understand that it wasn’t even Devlin anymore. It was Kimmy. It was lies and it was betrayal.

It was too much.

When Kimmy was giving birth to Colleen at St. Joseph’s in the city, he was seven-thousand clicks away curled up on a Rome hotel room floor, heart racing out of control. He was far from home, all alone, scared out of his mind by imaginary threats. He’d even gone mute. Gabrielle knocked on his door in the morning, tried to help him present himself, but he couldn’t even talk. She said, “You’re a dad, Josh.” Gabrielle had sent flowers to Kimmy in his name.

“Turn off your phone, dickhead.”

The snoring had stopped and Meyer saw he was pining, as Meyer called it. It wasn’t pining. Who knew what you would call it. For fun one time, he’d plotted revenge. Other times he swore he’d move on, that living a grand life would be the best revenge. But that kind of serenity took months of sifting to find at last. “I was checking the weather,” he said, slipping the cover down, turning his phone off and returning it to the side table.

“Stop picking at scabs.”

He said, “Stop fucking snoring. How about that?”

“I wasn’t snoring.” Meyer rolled over to face the wall.

Josh chuckled and tried closing his eyes again, seeking sleep.

Yeah, he would go next week. Hard as it was, he would go. If only just to show Kimmy he didn’t care about her anymore. Nothing she could do now would ever hurt him. He would find enormous glory in seeing her rendered powerless over him. The thought of her trying and failing raced his heart and even brought a little smile that tickled his lips with bristly beard hair. He rubbed a hand down his facial pelt. It should go. The beard should be shorn before his visit. Although Kimmy should see him as a stranger to who she knew, a man who’d moved on—and he was. Sometimes. Other times, like when you were having a blast in Mexico and some fucking guy you used to work with shoots you a picture of your wife at some gala on another man’s arm, maybe not so much.

And what about the showstopper, Joshy, my boy? What about the one thing in that picture—despite how hot your wife looked in it—that stole all your attention?

He rolled his head on the crisp hotel pillow, some despondency leaking through the Lorazepam’s armor. His eyes opened and roamed the room’s gray stillness.

Say it.

He mouthed the words: “She wasn’t wearing her wedding ring.”

  *

Meyer said, “If I showed up at work with the guys I work with, and I got a hundred dollar haircut...? Jesus fucking Christ, Josh, the nicknames...? The abuse I would receive? I’d rather have a hundred dollars and my dignity. You go ahead, though. You were always the pretty one.”

Josh elbowed him surreptitiously, two men almost thirty acting like a couple of teenagers in this upscale city salon with it’s marble floors and haughty reception and ten-foot ceilings.

“I told you, I just want to get cleaned up.”

“You can get cleaned up at a barber in Ajax. Barber’s like fifteen-twenty bucks.”

“I’m not making you get one.”

“Buy me one. For my birthday.”

“I spent almost a thousand dollars on your birthday already.”

Meyer nodded his chin, “Hey, here’s your guy,” both of them regarding now a tall dude, a stylish Filipino wearing an undershirt and a skirt, combat boots, hoop earrings and an Errol Flynn mustache. The guy said, “Where’s Josh?”

“That’s me.”

Rory was his hairdresser, a funny and charming guy, and real earnest about Josh’s look.

“This jacket is amazing,” Rory said, running fingers on the wicked vintage motocross jacket he’d bought at a flea market in Pickering. Beaten to shit for decades and still dusty from Mexico, he’d hung it up behind his salon chair, not wanting to leave it in the lobby, even with Meyer watching. Then Rory was running fingers through Josh’s hair, checking out the length, wondering what he would do with such a mess.

Josh said, “I want it all gone. I’m going back to work soon.”

“What do you do?”

“Ah, just an executive.”

“You look like a writer. Or an artist, maybe.”

“Nah. Spreadsheets and projections,” he said, then regretted it, preferring to live in Rory’s imagination of who he was. That sounded like a much better Josh. “I want a good presentable haircut for work. Take off the beard, too.”

Rory looked perplexed, running his nails through Josh’s beard, watching in the mirror, then stooping to get eyes on the actual thing. “You have a great suntan.”

“Thanks.”

“Were you on vacation? Where did you go?”

“Kind of a vacation. A guy’s trip. We rode enduro bikes down to Cabo San Lucas.”

Rory had stood up to lift a sprayer but wheeled when he heard about the bikes. “Really? Amazing. How many?”

“Guys?” Josh shrugged. “A dozen of us.”

Rory’s eyebrows kept creeping up, wowed by this tale of transcontinental two-wheel glory. Then he was close again, standing behind him, touching his hair and his beard. “You look good like this. It suits you.”

“It does?”

Hands on beard again. “If I take the beard I’m afraid your cheeks will be white.”

“Ew. That’s not good.”

Rory began spraying Josh’s hair, getting it wet, combing it, studying it.

Josh played with his wedding ring, looking at his reflection, seeing his face again with his hair combed back. The beard looked good. And, frankly, the weight loss looked good, too.

A writer. Or an artist, maybe.

He said, “I want to look good. I haven’t seen someone in a long time.”

Rory loved the story’s presentation. Engaged right away. “Oh, who is it?”

A long beat. “My wife.”

Rory looked puzzled.

“Yeah. Crazy, huh? I haven’t seen her in a year.”

Rory clipped a little, lost in thought, trying to figure the best way to ask a whole series of questions. “Why are you seeing her now?”

“She’s moved on, Rory. Moved on. Bought herself a house.”

Rory stopped clipping and put a hand on his hip. “A house. Bought herself a house?”

“I suppose it’s our money, but, yeah, we haven’t really figured that out yet. We have a kid.”

Rory went back to clipping. “This is getting complicated.”

“Tell me about it.”

More clipping, Rory formulating the best approach to get more info from him and maintain the natural charm he had.

“You’re right about that, though,” Josh said, seeing his face emerging, getting tidied but keeping the roguish raconteur with a broken heart who’d rode a motorcycle from Vancouver to Mexico and watched the sun set in Baja drinking a Corona, sun on his brow and cheeks.

“Right about what?”

“I look good like this. It suits me.”

Comments

All I know is that next chapter I’m reading the whole chapter first! I foolishly scrolled to the comments and spoiled myself🤣🤣🤣

Andrew Mellein

Remember that one of KT's stated recurring themes is women getting carried away by not-their-husbands. Suppose Kimmy is carrying on with a new man who she rationalizes can put her and a submissive Josh into a better lifestyle for dear Colleen. And in the meantime, if he has a big cock, can get her out of her legal jam, flies private, and buys her nice clothes, well, those are just the tribulations she will have to endure to set up her and Josh. We know that Kimmy majored in PoMo, with a minor in deconstructionism. She can handle this situation. Oh, the horror of having to endure another 30 chapters of this story {ok, how about 35?}.

Donkatsu

"But I just think that Kimmy died when Josh fell in the lake, and is not coming back". Beautifully phrased, JL, but please give me a warning when you are going to express soul crushing ideas with such excruciating simplicity! I'd say I wish I'd written it but I would never expose others to such an insidious concept! But seriously, the present situation seems to indicate she is to some extent still that person. I fear that she will never be able to let Josh back in... as an equal partner. Perhaps that was the traumatic avalanche that brought about all this shit! But I always cling on to the fact that Trauma Drama and Dream all stem from the same root. I'm an idiot.

Bill F Protagoras

Kimmy needs to leave space in her life for someone else, especially now she has a cuddly daughter. Perhaps she's already found a candidate... Shit a brick! I just realized, if there are as many as 30 chapters left as JL calculated... KT can do that flashback/slow lugubrious trickle of information thing she does so evilly well! I knew I should've bought an even longer spoon before I joined her damned Patreon!

Bill F Protagoras

I just keep coming back to the fact that we know nothing until we have a chapter where Kimmy explains her own mindset. As much as I’ve disagreed with a lot of her actions, she isn’t so heartless to beg him to stay away and tell him she’s working to deserve him again, only to be moving on with her life happily without him. She is either making moves to try and win him back, or something has happened to prevent her from doing that. If we don’t see Kimmy revealing that her actions are designed to win Josh back, or see that despite outside appearances she’s devastated that she can’t make that happen, I’d be very surprised. I can’t see our first glimpse of Kimmy being her living the high life with someone new, loving it, and no longer caring about trying to get Josh back. The one “dark” possibility is we see a Kimmy from chapters 9-13 emerging again, someone who thinks she knows better than Josh what he should want, and trying to manipulate him into rolling in the muck. But I just think that Kimmy died when Josh fell in the lake, and is not coming back. But again, we don’t know until we see what she’s thinking.

JL23

The Beatles and the Stones actually got on alright, Andrew, they let them sing and release "Money" first, probably as a bit of a leg up. The rivalry was a hype! Like the Stones cloaking themselves in the devilry of "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov, another one of my favourite books. Bad boys, my arse! Well, Keith is a bit naughty!

Bill F Protagoras

I guess so!

Bill F Protagoras

Maybe Brooke learned too much about Russian financial accounting from her clients in flight, on the ground and apparently with her computer skills. That is seldom a recipe for a long or peaceful life. AB was just being protective of her gal.

Donkatsu

I have always suspected it was something more nefarious, Steve. Like his introducing a wife who barely drank any alcohol, a point clearly made in the early books, to high end whiskey, which became their tipple, a regular ingredient and ritual of their sexual 'trysts'. I've never fallen for the Kimmy can take her booze while Josh can't schtick... she weighs much less than him. We 'all' think we can take our drink. Also this was the first time Devlin did wheedle her into leaving an oral treat for 'cucky' to savour, later engaging her in cruel mockery of Devlin's target on their cell phones before she went back to bed to complete the game of cheating whore and clueless dupe that was the denouement of "Sinner." Far from her greatest hour! Which was the first book of Devil in the Waters I was provoked to review... "Did I mention I hate Kimmy? In this latest instalment she seems to be devolving into some kind of wannabe high school mean girl with all the self-control of a bipolar bonobo. What really concerns me most about her is if, by the end of this hellish tale, Josh would be better off without her?" Fucking ironic, innit! Now here I am crying into my first cup of tea of the day. Bereft! PS Personally, I've always considered the time its victims lose one of cuckoldry's cruellest aspects... minutes, hours, days, weekends, weeks, months, A YEAR! A psychological 'strappado or corda' device Devlin made sure to factor into Kimmy's affair from their very first date at 'their' hotel when he fully relished her surrender and his first instalment of her husband's humiliation! And HE became HER lover! Her demon lover. He always craved Josh's anguish... how happy he must be now... lest we forget... but then again as a putative father of a love child he is never far from our minds. All that crying Kimmy did in Hyun's room, did she miss him? Just my cruel little joke! Has anybody ever wondered how devastating having her obsession that the child is Josh's being proven wrong would be for Kimmy! Another crack in the walls of the fortress of delusion she has constructed. If the damsel in distress should save herself what happens to the erring knight?

Bill F Protagoras

Always thought it was more about Devlin's ego than actual "care" .

Steve McCarty

Arnica is great. She and KT are like night and day when it comes to their writing. Arnica writes great 200 page bawdy hotwife tales. While KT writes these hotwife epics that last multiple books. They are basically like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. But without the rivalry and copying (LOL!) But I am rambling on. Oh shit that was Zeppelin.

Andrew Mellein

"He could tell she was afraid." How? Was there an emoji?

Bill F Protagoras

It's interesting that apparently Kimmy was not in a good place highlighted by her messages to Josh. But now that she had the kid and Josh went to Rome the tables have turned. And now Josh isn't in a good place having quit his job and taking medication for his panic attacks. While Kimmy is living the high life with a swanky new house, fancy new clothes, with her new daughter. And a possible new man all while abandoning her wedding ring and going by her maiden name. Meanwhile Josh is all scruffy and living with Meyer and apparently still pining for Kimmy.

Andrew Mellein

That book was a bit odd as though Arnica felt as though Brooke and the heavies sailed too close to the wind so she tied the story up in neat a but oddly unsatisfactory bow. It had potential but might not have been to AB's taste. Like the Shy series I thought it had another book in it, then... puff... it was gone!

Bill F Protagoras

Before I discovered KT Arnica B was my favourite New Vag author, the one whose latest books I awaited most eagerly. Her writing, always good, just grew better and better. One time some genius suggested she should leave the genre and write "real" literature. Condescending prick... I just thought today the only reason the old books became the cultural canon was because until the 18th Century the literate elite were the same as the social elite. So naturally as literacy spread it was necessary to keep the unwashed underclasses and their filthy easily available women and offspring in their exploitable place. What they read must be rubbish like themselves. I noticed today a review of Arnica's latest saying her writing was good as usual, but condemning the errata as though it was an intellectual deficiency. I used to mention errata in what I hoped was a jovial tone. Then I realized which of doesn't miss careless errors. So called reputable publishers reprint books in which errors reproduce like bunnies. Amazon is full of literary mediocrity that is dwarfed by KT and Arnica, yet they are not receiving recognition because even amongst genre Post Pornism is considered not just taboo but also shameful. The only problem within any genre is how well a work is written! The only problem with readers is publishers have spoiled them so outrageously they think they can dictate what should be written. If they are so knowledgeable they should take a crack at it themselves. Sorry, Donkatsu. My bitterness is for the historical quagmire we find ourselves in. In every aspect of life!

Bill F Protagoras

Brings to mind a favorite fantasy mashup of mine: Arnica B's Brooke (A World Class Service), a private jet stewardess serves Kimmy and Devlin flying down to the Cayman Islands. Good to bring in potential investors, especially ones who already need to hide cash. What about dragging Reza along to convince him to invest in the new company. Not a situation likely to promote an HEA reconciliation with Josh. {I LOVE Brooke and have had other equally silly plot ideas over the years involving different story line and character mashups.}

Donkatsu

Great idea! 👍🤣

Kat

She made a lot of money selling Devlins sex tape! 😈

Chris K

Exactly. What did she have to do to repay her debt, and to afford a new house?

Kat

Also has anybody else wondered why Kimmy only seems to have needed the "wellness protocol' that one time?

Bill F Protagoras

Ah, the overweening pride. Proving one's worthiness is such a difficult thing that people often take the easier route of denigrating others.

Bill F Protagoras

I think there’s more behind the house yes, at least that’s my hope. It wouldn’t surprise me if this is the first step in proving herself worthy of Josh. But how exactly does she have the money to buy it?

JL23

Unfortunately, for me I want KT to write a good book, whether it satisfies my callow desires or not. Many of my favourite works of art are tragic... Even a story that settles on a 'happy' note can still contain a big fat lump of tragedy or sadness... KT said she already had an ending in mind. Each new chapter she brings to us confirms my faith in her writing skills, and past works confirm her plotting skills... Usually, an epilogue wraps things up... this doesn't feel like any epilogue I've ever read. Kimmy was tempted by ambition, then only two chapters ago she abandoned Josh expressing a new ambition with tear filled eyes and asked for his faith in open ended promises that for all Josh knew could be airy nothings, as reliable as her assurances he would enjoy humiliation... despite the shame he attached to it! I keep on wanting to say she has felt isolated and alone for a year contrary to appearances... but honesty makes me require solid proof. Corroboratory evidence! She enjoyed deriding and humiliating Josh behind his back of her volition on her own initiative with no encouragement or wheedling on Devlin's part. Does Josh know this? Is it why he is 'trying' to numb himself with booze and meds? Fear that Colleen might look like her father... not her mother...

Bill F Protagoras

Gabrielle sent flowers from Josh when he was in Rome suffering from panic attacks. He was in Rome when Colleen was born. Meyer seems to believe the baby is Josh’s. Why else would he go to Kimmy’s place for a party? I know he said he was doing it for Sophie, but I can’t believe he’d go if he knew the baby was Devlin’s. He might even keep Sophie from going, too. Meyer loves Josh, and wouldn’t make him do something so unnecessary as visiting his wife’s house to meet a baby that isn’t his. I’m starting to think there’s something to Kimmy having knowledge now that the baby is Devlin’s, but she’s keeping it to herself. Maybe hoping to pass her off as Josh’s, because otherwise there would be no hope of them getting back together. I’ve always had the feeling that the baby was going to be Devlin’s. There were too many opportunities for something to have happened in the weeks before her birth control was working. With Josh, she made him use condoms, or didn’t have intercourse with him. She was careless with Devlin, not with her husband. I kind of thought of an ending where Kimmy gets Josh back, and then finds out the baby is Devlin’s, and she’s miserably stuck with him for life, while Josh goes off into the sunset with some other hot woman. As usual, I was wrong, maybe not about the baby, but about Kimmy finally having to accept the consequences of her actions. It looks like Kimmy wins no matter what the outcome is. I don’t want Kimmy to be miserable, but I wanted some sort of pay back for all the rotten things she did. I wanted the HEA, but also seeing Kimmy be responsible and humbled, not getting everything she wants and more, while her husband suffers.

Kat

Joni Mitchell's version runs in an emotional counterpoint to the sentiment of her lyrics (and her more usual sentiments in song) whilst the Crows lean into the more melancholy side contained in and inspired by the lyrics. So they basically sing two different songs. Kimmy seems to me to be acting out several extreme counterpoints of herself... In the early books giving free rein to types of reckless abandonment and steely eyed control... Which is why in Joni's version I discern the possibly mistaken tensions I imagine Kimmy must be feeling.... if not displaying. KT's blurb for Book 14 focusses on Josh while remaining reticent about the character who most prominently features on the covers of the books, The character we are still kept in the dark about was a person who, before the High School Reunion, was seen by most of those who knew her as open, gregarious, modest, compassionate and... faithful. Even the bullies saw her as a victim, a nerd... fresh meat!

Bill F Protagoras

My thought was it was some kind of celebrity or notable figure. It felt to me like he was more incredulous that Kimmy would be running the same kind of circles as the guy she was with. But her going with someone like Devlin or his father would make a greater amount of narrative sense. It just feels like THAT would be all Josh could focus on if it was.

JL23

Really more familiar with the Counting Crows version, not so much Joni Mitchell. The Crows are in my particular wheelhouse for music when I was a younger lad.

JL23

What other options are there? He knew who it was. How many other male characters are they both familiar with? Unless it’s some celebrity.

Tracey52

If she was going to tell him it's over, wouldn't it be foolish to buy a house? Wouldn't still be a marital asset? Josh could say, ok sell the house, I want my money! Lol.

Chris K

Ditto!

Bill F Protagoras

Also more pointedly, my own admixture of Joni and the calculating Crows, Late last night I heard the screen door sway And a big yellow taxi took my old man away I think Josh is way beyond slamming doors. And I'm afraid to imagine what Kimmy has become, that's why my mind has fixed on Joni's upbeat version which ends in scattered female laughter but yeah... that's an old blues frefrain... like God's a gonna trouble the waters! Amen. You don't miss the water till the well runs dry.

Bill F Protagoras

Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you got til it’s gone.

JL23

Definite possibility it was the father, and part of her bargain to get out from under the money stealing. I still think Josh would have a more visceral reaction to it if any Stone or Stone adjacent guy was in that picture. He was more focused on how good (and seemingly happy) Kimmy looked and that she wasn’t wearing her ring.

JL23

So many questions. But take your time, cause I know the next chapter will answer some and just create a bunch more lol. I’m really worried Kimmy is going to tell Josh it’s over, even though I suspect she doesn’t really mean or want that. Feel free to not answer this if you don’t want to KT (or don’t know yet) but I’ll ask anyway, how many chapters do you think Book 15 will be? Based on the last answer that there were about 50 or so left at that point, seems like there still may be 30 or so to go?

JL23

Deserved praise from a fellow author whose own writing itself makes it worth savouring even if delivered with congenial laughter. Her style is very different from yours but I read everything she writes too.

Bill F Protagoras

Please soon KT!

Kat

Me too!!

Kat

Yes! I have so many questions. (LOL!)

Andrew Mellein

I'm writing away as we speak! Almost there. Later tonight (pushin' it) but tomorrow for sure.

KT Morrison

LOL!

KT Morrison

Do we know for for a fact that Josh has never met Colleen? It seems like this meeting would be the first time. But Meyer sent flowers to Kimmy in Josh's stead when Kimmy gave birth. And begged him to go to this meeting and pretty much said he's the father. But I got to know more!

Andrew Mellein

Ha ha. had lunch with Arnica B a few weeks ago and she joked DITW is the Ulysses of hotwife!

KT Morrison

Yes! When Kimmy gave birth. Who was with her? Her family? We know not Josh. And if her family then they would know something is up with her marriage.

Andrew Mellein

I keep coming back here! Hoping that KT posts another chapter (LOL)

Andrew Mellein

I thought of that, too.

Kat

The fucking man Kimmy was with in the picture. How? Like really, fucking how? Could it be Stone senior? Another kick in the teeth for Devlin?

Tracey52

Will there be a Big Yellow Taxi ending?

Bill F Protagoras

Will there be a Banquo or an Ancient Mariner at the feast?

Bill F Protagoras

Much more investment than Josh apparently. She would have his bully's baby. That's pretty sick. It's also the devil's spawn. I hope the kid is not Devlin's but if it is. Josh should quit worrying about the harlot and move on with his life.

Andrew Mellein

I think now even Kimmy would admit 'what the fuck did she know'! Although she still appears to be pretty proud and unbending in many ways. Her family has to have at least an inking that Kimmy Chang is no straight shooter. However, she too has now given her father a grandchild even if she's only a 'Colleen.' Kimberly's dad will not be well pleased, if Josh is not Colleen's father but was sired by a Stone! (Although money talks loud, when it's not lying). If it were not for the fact there is a lot of tangled webbing that is making Kimmy Ringless Chang stand out like a sore thumb, I might cave for the dark legend of the cruel manipulative bitch trying to pass what came from a big golden cuckoo's egg as Josh's very own! However, unless we're in Dynastyland... that isn't gonna fly! Not nowadays!

Bill F Protagoras

Andrew, Kimmy wouldn't abort because she lost the first baby. Despite the ID of the father it her child. Female perspective is different she has a huge investment in that baby.

RCH

I agree, Andrew. I don’t think I’d be able to take a nightmarish ending like that. As it stands, these last two chapters have given me enough terror. Lol

Kat

Meyer seems to be the only one in this story that truly loves and cares about what happens to Josh.

Kat

That's another thing we just don't have enough information. They could still be together, just not living together.

JL23

I guess he’s not with Quinn?

Andrew Mellein

One other observation, I’ve enjoyed the little snippets of the Josh/Meyer buddy comedy amidst the rest of the angst and tragedy. It felt a bit like Kimmy would always kind of cluck her tongue at that relationship…”oh, Josh is out wasting time playing video games with Meyer. That’s not good for him.” Little digs like that when she was in thrall of who she was becoming, and kind of her way of diminishing both Meyer and Josh. But it’s clear they have an important relationship, and Meyer has done a lot to keep Josh from going totally off the rails. He says in this chapter, Meyer and Sophie have really been what’s kept him going. And Meyer has sacrificed a lot for his cousin, moving in with and watching over him. That probably wasn’t what he thought he’d be doing, but he’s done it without complaints, as far as we’ve seen. Anyway, I think my perception of Meyer early on was kind of colored by Kimmy’s perception of him, which I now see was off. He’s a good dude.

JL23

I keep forgetting to mention it... but by taking us to the place Avernus where Vergil has Aeneas visit the Latin underground Dis it completes the link with the Inferno completing the connection with Dante's First Circle. Also Aeneas, son of Aphrodite, is seeking a new home for himself and the Trojan refugees. Kimmy has bought herself a new home. Warning! Aeneas brokered a new marriage for himself in order to end strife and be welcomed into his promised land. KT has not followed any of the epics she has embraced slavishly, much less so than James Joyce followed the Odyssey or Virgil mirrored Homer's two epics. But...

Bill F Protagoras

Yeah, Kimmy living the high life, yet again, pisses me off. Someone had to have helped her. She owed the company 75K. She was unemployed and homeless, too.

Kat

I thought you'd like it, Tracey. As I said elsewhere, everybody who knows me well knows I love Impure Thoughts. Hannibal Lecter farber bean sounds... aaaah Libby come closer to the glass! Like KT I'm having (too much) fun... Probably overcompensating for the dearth of deviant sex on Patreon.

Bill F Protagoras

Thanks, Kat! I do read their stuff... I respect their opinions. Even though they occasionally, in the past flogged some things like that dead horse in Dostoevsky which Heller referenced in his Roman hell scape in Catch 22! Don't get me started on films and songs etc. Though some sadist tried to teach us not ever to use etcetara cos it is lazy.

Bill F Protagoras

Maybe, I was too subtle in my phrasing... you know... the CHAIR! After all Glenn is his mucker... we still don't know what the celebration is for... I don't think Sophie is eagerly inviting her beloved uncle to the announcement that Colleen isn't HIS! Though JL has made some salient points. I don't want too seem a big girl's blouse but joining in the speculation does not bring me contentment. I was a teacher of English and have successfully taught English Comprehension for most of my life as well as having read extensively for pleasure, there is a shitstorm of credible storylines in my head. Maybe, Kimmy has ordered a life size light weight replica of the Throne of Swords especially for the occasion. I have some pretty hefty book end replicas myself, maybe they'll be included in a bag of treats for guests... See, that all just came streaming out of my head now like a tickertape! I can use a formal conclusion to stop it when writing. Byeee!

Bill F Protagoras

Now it's not. Should have done it before.

Andrew Mellein

Aborting would probably not be advisable for Kimmy in the circumstances, Andrew.

Bill F Protagoras

KT is back to the epics, Kat. Avernus is in fact a mephitic smelling lake which is associated with the underworld. Aeneas visits it in Virgil's Aeneid. Virgil was Dante's guide,of course. Virgil's Dis was a model for Dante's Inferno. Aeneas received the golden bough from the Cumaen Sybil by Lake Avernus, which enabled him to safely visit the underworld... despite some scrapes especially one with Achilles! He also saw Dido Queen of Carthage there, the lover who he had betrayed and who killed herself when he deserted her to sail off on his quest to found a new Troy... the Glory that was Rome (or so they say).

Bill F Protagoras

I think it's ultimate cruelty of Kimmy to have the child of the man they both hate (especially Josh) and expect Josh to be happy about it and raise it. When he already told her what he thought. Also with her ability to buy a new house and fancy dresses I think Devlin is already in the picture somehow. I hate to say it but Kimmy should have found out the paternity before birth and if it was Devlin's terminated the pregnancy and then lied (like she always does) and said it was another miscarriage. I pray the kid is not Devlin's though.

Andrew Mellein

It started to feel like HEA after Kimmy bailed from Devlin's but now it's starting to get really dark! What if the series ends with Kimmy's prediction to Devlin that Josh would raise Devlin's kid in their new house and Kimmy would continue to fuck Devlin! Things are starting to point that way! Please KT don't do it. I want HEA after 14 books of darkness and lies.

Andrew Mellein

Kat. I hate to say it but why didn't Kimmy get a paternity test to see if the kid is Devlin's before giving birth? And if it was. Why didn't she go to Planned Parenthood? I think it's cruel that she would give birth to the child of her husband's bully and the man he hates. And expect him to raise Colleen. She would have to know that would be the end of her marriage. Also you know Devlin's going to be in the child's life in some way making havoc in Josh's world and reminding him of Kimmy 's sins. I know Kimmy had a miscarriage before but she could easily lie to Josh ( like she has a bazillion times already) and say she had another miscarriage while getting a quick abortion. Hell, she hates Devlin too! Why have his kid? It doesn't make sense. I guess we will know more. But if the kid is Devlin's I hope Josh bails for good. Kimmy treated him like shit through the whole series!

Andrew Mellein

Unless they keep it from Devlin? Josh’s secret shame. The daughter he loves was created from his bully. Life in hell, sort of goes with the final book’s title.

Kat

The title of the book gave me pause the other day. Doesn’t portend for a HEA, does it? 😬

Kat

And yet if he's been in hell the whole series, seeing the gateway now offers the tantalizing possibility of escape. Is that a hope that's only being teased to be snatched away (like other myths about leaving the underworld)? We'll have to wait and see.

Glaucon

Wayne and Glaucon brought up two good points, that I’ve been thinking about. Wayne suggested that Kimmy was photographed at the gala with Glenn. It would make sense that that was why Josh was so incredulous when he saw who the man was in the picture. It doesn’t mean that Kimmy is with Glenn. It could be how she’s made enough money to afford a house as a single mom with a newborn, though. She could be working for Glenn, maybe she showed Glenn the incriminating video of Devlin and Amy? Maybe he was mad enough to offer some work to Kimmy? I really hope that video comes back to haunt him. Where is it? I was looking forward to its reveal! Glaucon suggested that the reason Kimmy has kept Colleen from Josh is because she knows Devlin is the father, and all his heartache is a slow walk into getting him to accept Devlin as Colleen’s father, all while getting back together with Josh. This could be a likely possibility. I can’t believe that Kimmy just moved on from Josh so quickly, after she agonized over him when he was near death in the hospital. How does love, caring and basic dependence like that just disappear so fast? I also think Kimmy had to do some unsavoury things to keep herself out of jail and separated from her baby. She needed to complete something in order to get her life back to a place where she could be Josh’s wife, friend and protector again. If it turned out that Devlin was Colleen’s father, it would completely mess that up for her. She claimed to hate Devlin. There’s no way she wants to raise a child with him, but she’d love the opportunity to take lots of money from him. Josh said that Kimmy looked “pampered” in the picture, and we all know how much Kimmy loved her luxurious life of working for Devlin and buying 1,200.00 shoes. All of my thoughts will probably be wrong once we get the next chapter. I know I’m being greedy (2 DITW chapters in 2 days! Yay!), but I hope the next chapter comes soon!

Kat

I think he is more afraid of the judgement of others, and the questions they must have in their head about what happened between them, than he is at being alone with Kimmy. He probably is hoping for answers from her, and he wouldn't be able to get them if everyone is there. Whether he ends up liking the answers is another matter. And yeah, I assume it's friends and family, people like Hyun, Sophia, Meyer, Karina, probably her father and sister. When we last left her though, her relationships with most of these people, other than Hyun and Sophie, were not exactly in great shape either. So it will be interesting to see how those have advanced over the last year. Also, not sure if it was talked about, but the title of this book basically translates to "gateway to hell." Josh already seems to be in hell, but that title may indicate it's only beginning for him. Sorry for another downer of a thought.

JL23

I know, Andrew, there are so many unanswered crucial questions. I’m thinking if there is a HEA, it won’t be the one we’re hoping for.

Kat

That's a great question, Bill. It comes across as most "friends" will be there in the afternoon, so the dinner feels more intimate, but given Josh's issues, I couldn't imagine he'd acquiesce to a one on one. That would feel brutal. Then again, maybe he does want that because the thought of breaking down in a panic attack in front of lots of friends and family would be terrifying. Hence it being a tough decision and maybe not wanting to go at all for fear of looking weak and frazzled.

L_S87

I’m worried about this whole final book. Lol She seemed to be too confident in the past few chapters about the baby being Josh’s. She even told Devlin as a way to hurt him/lead him on, and then told him he was stupid to ever have believed that the baby was his. She practically begged Josh to believe it was his. I think Kimmy was so traumatized and dejected by her Spring miscarriage that she would do anything to deliver a healthy baby now, no matter who its father was. In typical Kimmy fashion, as well, she probably believed that she could convince Josh the baby was his, or somehow get him to accept the baby as Devlin’s, but have him be her dad. Or not. Maybe she knows it’s Devlin’s. As you said, that’s why she could afford a new house now. I have no clue anymore, we need more info. I’m still on the side of a HEA, but Kimmy is pushing me away fast.

Kat

So do I, Andrew. These past two chapters have left me even more obsessed with this story than ever.

Kat

Kimmy’s family, probably, maybe some friends, too, like Karina?

Kat

Josh just can’t get over Kimmy. And I am starting to think the kid is not his. But why would Meyer make him go to Kimmy’s house if it wasn’t? And where did Kimmy get all the money after no longer working at Stone? The next chapter is going to be pivotal explaining this.

Andrew Mellein

I want to hear about Josh’s dating experiences, too. Clearly he never met anyone he liked enough to push his need for Kimmy away. Maybe they weren’t serious attempts to move on.

Kat

I hope the kid is not Devlin’s. I want a Hea. If it is Devlin’s it’s another lie from Kimmy. She practically begged Josh that it was his kid. Kimmy should have got a paternity check before having the baby. I am worried about the next chapter.

Andrew Mellein

If the kid is not Josh’s then I think this marriage is over and Josh is right not to put up with her bullshit. Because you know Devlins going to be in the picture for the rest of his life if he magically wants to make amends with Kimmy. I would rather for Josh to do what he is doing clean himself up and then try to get his job back. Because it’s starting to make sense for Kimmy to be able to buy a house, be successful, and wear fancy gowns if it was Devlin’s. I want to read the next chapter so bad!

Andrew Mellein

Also if Colleen is Devlin’s you know that Devlin is going to be in that kids life. That’s another blow from Kimmy to Josh. No way is Josh going to be tied down to Kimmy after that!

Andrew Mellein

I wonder who else has been invited to the dinner... will there be a boufet or will they have the typical sit down thing... you know... with a table... and chairs...

Bill F Protagoras

An excellent post, JL.

Bill F Protagoras

Unfortunately that might explain why she texted him at one point she was "irredeemable." I just need to know more about Josh and his relationship with Colleen. He says he hasn't seen Kimmy in a year, but that might not necessarily mean he hasn't seen the baby. Possible Kimmy dropped her off at Hyun's, or something? It just seems odd he'd have no contact with his daughter. Kimmy might feel she doesn't deserve Josh, but doesn't his daughter deserve him? And why does it seem like Josh is not exactly eager to see Colleen either. It points to the baby not being his, but I feel like Josh would have hinted at that in his internal monologue the last 2 chapters. But maybe he doesn't yet know the baby is actually Devlin's. But again, I feel like I'm jumping to the obvious conclusion when we only have scattered facts, and the reality will be different when it's uncovered in the story.

JL23

Very harsh, but these two are not the best communicators. I also agree with you that Colleen may be Devlin’s. Having her be Josh’s daughter is just too easy.

Kat

The more I think about it, the more this sounds like a possibility. Makes sense to me.

Kat

This is something I could definitely see happening. It makes total sense, too.

Kat

You should be able to appreciate the quality of your own writing from the fact that I just wrote all that without a stop ( except to check Thongs for a name). You're like a black jewel spilled from the pocket of one of the angels that are spread wall to wall like a writhing carpet over the floor of Pandemonium. Why would it carry a jewel into battle? Fuck'd if I know, mighta been a favour from its lover. Political correction is easy with angels they don't give a toss how you address them what with all their gender fluidity and pronouns up the wazoo!

Bill F Protagoras

“I look good like this. It suits me.” Softcore page turner.

Bill F Protagoras

"Rory went back to clipping. “This is getting complicated.” You took the words right out of my mouth, Rory!

Bill F Protagoras

"preferring to live in Rory’s imagination of who he was." Who wouldn't... a Filipino Errol Flynn, I hope he's more careful with his cipote than Errol. I suppose yer man could have a grandson who's a classy smooth talking barber.

Bill F Protagoras

"You were always the pretty one.” The clincher! Devlin you dirty ole dawg!

Bill F Protagoras

“She wasn’t wearing her wedding ring.” Perhaps she's just a high end escort now, and that handsome gentleman isn't really into screwing a woman, whose 'husband' he knows and 'likes,' whenever he wants! Maybe she only wears the ring on your wedding anniversary and asks her client to call her Mrs Waters for the added frisson. Isn't it your shit anniversary soon? Isn't that the one when the blushing bride takes a dump on the ring of power? By the way, who was the maid of honor at your wedding? Spot the mistake.

Bill F Protagoras

I want to hear more about Josh's dating. In my experience, guys who get to the point that they move on far enough to do that don't have the reactions Josh is having, or the deep slide back. So I'm wondering if that went awful, who did Josh date? How far did they get sexually? That was probably my other major gripe with Maggie. Josh getting with what's her name and then falling on his face. 99.99% of guys in that position wouldn't react that way, they'd hit it and then have huge regrets in the morning. So that one statement about dating is a big deal and probably deserves more than the tiny little mention it got. Maybe KT can formulate a way to integrate it into this event where Josh brings a date, or a former date shows up. Something to give that statement more than just throw away meaning. Because that's a HUGE step for Josh, and it needs to be explored.

L_S87

"When Kimmy was giving birth to Colleen at St. She said, “You’re a dad, Josh.” Gabrielle had sent flowers to Kimmy in his name." Nice get out of jail free card, KT. Tell me, has Gabrielle blown Joshua's horn yet? More than once? Or would the endless details of his bouncy bouncy rebounds spoil it for me? Just one thing more... did she seductively pop her finger in mouth and give him a wet bumholey so he shot a virile kingsize hot daddyload in her clenching pussy! How many did he knock up? Wait a minute you've just been getting me all riled up and wankified, so I don't ask you if Colleen is the name of a character from Dennis Wheatley's "To the Devil a Daughter," 'cos I can't remember! You wicked minx!

Bill F Protagoras

"The snoring had stopped and Meyer saw he was pining, as Meyer called it. It wasn’t pining. Who knew what you would call it. For fun one time, he’d plotted revenge. Other times he swore he’d move on, that living a grand life would be the best revenge." Did he never consider digging two graves and ordering one tombstone with "Their names were writ in waters : not fucking Chang!" carved on it?

Bill F Protagoras

"But that was still irrational." No comment! But I will take this opportunity to tell you Panic Attacks in Rome is from one of the Godzilla films... bringing to mind Josh's triumphant Godzilla moment... no banal spoilsport rebuttals, if you please, you're having your fun give me a meagre moment.

Bill F Protagoras

"Then he was home, and—hell, yeah—he dated." Give them what they want... but keep them begging for more,

Bill F Protagoras

"Kimmy: Stay away, Josh. I hope it won’t be forever." But it will seem like it to me. Pretty ambiguous ey, KT? But I mean ME!

Bill F Protagoras

There is a world where Kimmy has learned Colleen is Devlin’s and is endeavouring to stay away from Josh, and all of this heartache is a slow walk to Josh accepting Kimmy back with Devlin’s child. Just throwing out more suitably dark possibilities.

Glaucon

"Wonderful little snippets of things she’d texted him in her departure’s aftermath. Statements he’d often ponder." I bet HE fucking WOULD! 'She' is such a twisted cunny! Well at least she's not humiliating him just to get her rocks off anymore. Or is it more a St Augustine thing were she's promising to sin no more but... Oooooh Lord! Nnnnnnnnnnngggh!.. not just yet. I forgive her!

Bill F Protagoras

Was EVERYTHING she said that last time a lie? Rhetorical question! "This could be the last time. This could be the last time. It maaaaay be the last time... I don't knoooooooooooow!" Don't be such a dick, Bill! We all know Kimmy's as straight as a dye! What about her thing with Hyun? Alright then... she's still as straight... as a dyke...

Bill F Protagoras

"Because she was yours, dipshit. She was yours and now she’s not." Try looking at it this way, dipshit, she was never yours and always won't be. At least you would be more accurate. People can give themselves to you, but they never never belong to you... it's just a Summer's lease...

Bill F Protagoras

"his heart just a pulsatile pain machine."

Bill F Protagoras

"Stone Walls do not a Prison make, Nor Iron bars a Cage; Minds innocent and quiet take That for an Hermitage. If I have freedom in my Love, And in my soul am free, Angels alone that soar above, Enjoy such Liberty." Neither being right, nor shitty irony are always any sodding consolation. Sometimes you just have to lie back and take it like a good little sub while Time's bulky chariot is ridden back and forth over your prone pain racked body. If you're lucky like Richard Lovelace, a guilty innocent pawn caught in a royal match, they behead you. If you're not there's always drawing and quartering to look forward to... followed by folding paper cranes... or a miserable chapter titled lessons of Lorazepam and Guinness. At least Guinness is good for you! Har-Fucking-Har! Explicit enough for you, Mithtreth? Or should I call you by your alias Carmencita de Las Lunas?

Bill F Protagoras

Now we need Kimmys POV stat!

Andrew Mellein

I am stumped about Josh never having seen his child. You would think he would have been there when Kimmy gave birth. And from these two chapters it would seem to be Josh’s kid. Hell he has been invited over there to meet them. Unless another shoe is about to drop!

Andrew Mellein

Good thoughts. I’m feeling that Colleen might be biologically Devlin’s. I think, hope, that Kimmy will lay it all out to Josh and while she’ll want him back, she’ll push him away because she feels unworthy and irredeemable. If Josh wants her back, he’ll have to fight for it. Something he should have done when she started working for Devlin.

Tracey52

No wedding ring might mean she doesn’t feel worthy wearing it. I think Kimmy wants Josh back, but only when she feels worthy. That’s my take from the end of the last book. Pretty harsh though to wait a year.

Tracey52

Kimmy said she wants to redeem herself. I think she is keeping Josh away until she thinks she is worthy of him. Josh would seem to want her back. I’m somewhat encouraged by this chapter. Josh also has some maturing to do to be able to handle Kimmy. Accepting this new look, planning on going back to work, facing Kimmy, hopefully on a more even playing field, are positives. At least I hope so. The guy in the picture might not be anything significant.

Tracey52

The the way things we. Double word unless Josh is stuttering in his mind😉

Tracey52

If she really wanted Josh back, that would be a bad move.

Chris K

That would be the first honest thing she's done Kat. I mean, really!

Chris K

What did she have to do to repay her debt, and why did she need to keep away from her husband? They are still legally married, too. I hope she’s not going to give Josh divorce papers on the weekend.

Kat

Why would she text Josh that she wants to win him back? Was she just spouting BS? She also texted him that she was irredeemable. Maybe she found out that Devlin is Colleen’s father, and while she wanted Josh, she’s now pushing him out of her life for good, because she can’t face him with the truth?

Kat

Lol, we don’t know anything for sure. But it’s clear Meyer has pushed him to attend, and I doubt he’d do that if Josh wasn’t invited. The last chapter indicates Josh made plans with Kimmy to come over at night and see her alone, I don’t know who else he’d arrange that with. Unless he’s lying about that part, but I can’t see that being the case. I would agree with Kat, the timing of her cutting him off, right around the baby being born, could be an indication she had to do something to insure she wasn’t going to jail when she was about to be a mother. It’s the not letting Josh see the kid for 6 months I do not get. That to me unfortunately portends she might have something she desperately doesn’t want to acknowledge to him about Colleen.

JL23

It really doesn’t make much sense if her plan is to tell Josh it’s over, that she would do it this way. The going later seems to be Josh’s idea, but again, I just come back to there’s no more story if that’s what she’s planning to tell him. Or, even if that’s ultimately what she tells him, that it’s what she truly wants. I’d also say, and again I may be reading what I want to read, but I don’t think she got off scott free on stealing the money. The text exchanges, as Josh describes, would indicate there was a point she was despondent and scared, and I don’t believe she’d fake that just to torment Josh randomly. But clearly, since she’s had the baby, something has changed in her life, for the better it seems…but looks can be deceiving. We just have to wait a bit to figure out what that change was.

JL23

A definite possibility, one I was thinking as well. I think Josh would have had a bigger reaction to that, cause if she was with Glenn he’d put 2 and 2 together and realize Devlin couldn’t be too far away. But her actually going to work with Devlin in order to make a living is possible. I’d also say just because she was seen in a picture attending a gala with someone is not proof she is actually in a relationship with that person.

JL23

I guessed from the conversation in the last chapter that Meyer has been trying to get him to interact with his daughter. Meyer believes the child is his. If Kimmy tells him the baby isn’t his, isn’t the story over, as well? Why is she inviting him over now, though? You’re right that it appears that she cut off contact with him after Colleen was born. Did she have to agree to do some bad stuff to keep herself out of jail, and rebuild before she could let Josh in again? I hope there’s an answer to all of this, and Kimmy isn’t just the sum of all her terrible actions.

Kat

Do we know for sure that Josh was invited to this thing? Meyer is going for Sophie and asking Josh if he is going, but was he invited? It's hasn't been said.

Chris K

Maybe she is with Amy's boyfriend. She left Stone Brokerage, but maybe Devlin, Kimmy and Devlin's compadre set up shop.

Wayne

Oh, I hope not. Is she trying to get him to walk off a dock again?

Kat

I still firmly believe there’s more to this. If in the next chapter he goes to the house and it’s apparent she actually just moved on with her life, then the story is over. What she told him in the texts, the way she actively pushed him away, now suddenly she appears to want to see him again, after getting the house …I can’t imagine it’s to dump the final anvil on his head. The one worry I have is her not having him see Colleen, which I’m assuming since he says he hasn’t seen Kimmy in a year. I’d fear she has found out it’s actually Devlin’s and is now going to break that news to him when they meet.

JL23

I’m too invested in this story, it seems. This chapter hasn’t helped me feel better at all. I don’t think the man in the picture is Devlin. Josh would have stated that. I agree with you, that despite all the horrible things Kimmy has done, I never thought she was an irredeemable person. I believed that she loved Josh and never wanted to lose him. Much of what she’s done this last year is appears to be even crueler than what she did with Devlin. I think I need to let Kimmy go more than Josh does. Lol

Kat

The other thing I’m thinking is that Josh has a number of times been right here, ready to prove a point to Kimmy, or show her that she can’t affect him, and then Kimmy pulls the rug out from under him with what she says or does, either intentionally or unintentionally. I kind of wonder if he’s walking into another of those moments here in the next chapter.

JL23

So, it seems as though Kimmy faced no consequences from stealing the money from Stone, and somehow rebuilt herself a career or a relationship with a new man well off enough to be photographed at a gala for the newspaper. She’s dropped her married last name, and her wedding ring, too. She’s even bought herself a house. Kimmy is living her best life. Will she ever have to pay for all the bad she’s done? She doesn’t even care it seems. This thing on the weekend sounds like a party at Kimmy’s new house. Will her new man be there, too? We know it’s not Devlin. Why would she invite Josh if she’s seeing someone else? Sure, he needs to see his daughter, but this seems weird to me. If Kimmy has moved on, why even invite Josh over? She should meet with him somewhere else if it’s about the baby. Why have Josh over alone for dinner later in the day? Does she want to rub his face in her new life? Hasn’t she hurt this man enough? At least we know that she’s not in a romantic relationship with Hyun. I love little Sophie, telling on her Aunt Kimmy to Josh. While I totally love the two new chapters in two days, this chapter has given me an even bigger stomach ache. Sorry KT! It’s hard to read about Kimmy moving on away from Josh, and seeing him get the details piecemeal. It reminds me of an ex boyfriend that treated me badly, and then broke my heart when I was young. I continued to have to hear about him because he married an ex friend of mine, who I shared friends with. I can feel Josh’s pain in this situation. There’s not enough alcohol to get rid of those feelings, you just have to live through it. I was obviously able to move on, but I didn’t have a kid with him! If Kimmy has moved on, how is Josh supposed to be around their kid, and get himself well again? I know we’re still missing a lot of details, but how could Kimmy do this to him? Throughout it all she claimed to love him.. She wanted so badly for the baby to be his, so they could raise it in their house together. I need more info, please!

Kat

So I take it Josh has not seen this baby at all, therefore he doesn't actually know it's his. The house is good, fits with Kimmys plan. But showing up publicly with another man and no wedding rings?...hard to explain

Chris K

Yeah, wrong on everything, as always. I still think I’m right that there is a bigger story behind Kimmy’s “success” that has yet been revealed. I don’t believe the guy on her arm was Devlin, I think Josh would have reacted and focused on that as the image burned in his brain more than the fact she wasn’t wearing her wedding ring. But who knows at this point. It does appear he recognized who the man was, but his incredulous reaction read to me more like he had no idea how his Kimmy could run in the same circles as that person, rather than she was with his bully and tormentor. It’s confirmed she’s not at Stone, and reading through the snippets of conversations she did have with Josh I think it’s clear she went through…something…with the stealing. But now she’s going to fancy galas with a mystery guy and has the resources to buy a house? Good to at least see Josh is picking himself up and getting ready to face Kimmy and her new house. This chapter would at least seem to indicate that it’s not Josh who is distancing himself from Kimmy and the baby, it’s more that Kimmy has actively pushed him away. Why wouldn’t she want him to see the baby? What does that say about what she knows about who the father is? Josh doesn’t seem to be questioning he’s the father, but we still don’t know. Maybe that’s playing into Kimmy being despondent and pushing him away. I guess we’ll find out at that time if she’s really with Devlin. If she is, I still have to go with the idea she has an ulterior motive for doing it. The texts between them and what Sophie told him would seem to indicate that. Again, Kimmy just moving on with her life and leaving Josh behind doesn’t make sense, at all. Not with those despondent text conversations. If all that was BS, Kimmy is a terrible person, and despite a lot of bad she’s done, she’s not that level of terrible. The house may be the key point, she has the house she talked about buying for them. And now, it seems, she finally wants to see him again. I can’t imagine it’s to rub it in his face that she bought a house and has a new rich guy to flaunt (or God forbid the guy is Devlin). And again…how exactly does she have the money to buy a house? That’s where a Devil’s (or Devlin) bargain may be at play.

JL23

Thank you for 2 in 2 days KT!

Chris K
