When the Major reminisces about going to the theatre with Marjorie Atwell, and he says he calls her Winnie because that's who she looks like, Basil remarks that she isn't black. Winifred 'Winnie' Atwell was a famous Trinidadian ragtime pianist, who among many other things was the first black artist to reach number one on the UK singles chart. The confusion is that the Major thinks his ladyfriend Marjorie resembled Winston 'Winnie' Churchill rather than the lovely Ms Atwell of the keys.
