The storytelling was phenomenal in this match!

DanteOnDeck

It's incredible how much history and stories are behind these matches. Thank you for filling me in on this! It makes my AJPW journey even better and helps a ton

I'll add Okada and Ospreay to the vote next week! And same with Kobashi and Misawa, maybe we can do one of the series for superstar history

DanteOnDeck

Hopefully you reacted to more series of matches would recommend Kenta Kobashi and Misawas matches or okada and ospreays

AHHHHHHH I love Old Mean Bastard Jumbo so fucking much. What a fucking wrestler man.

This match, maybe even more than the earlier one where Misawa beats Jumbo, was a really big deal for what AJPW would become. This was the moment (specifically either the Chairshots or the Slaps) where Jumbo completely switches to being a Heel, rather than just a veteran trying to keep his spot. At the same time, there's been a massive Talent Exodus. Tenryu has jumped to form his own promotion (Super World of Sports), and taken a substantial amount of main eventers with him, notably some of Jumbo Tsuruta's main tag partners (Yoshiyaki Yatsu and The Great Kabuki). Giant Baba was scrambling to fill the void, and lucked out. With Misawa losing some big matches following his win over Jumbo, he had Akira Taue betray his friends in the Super Generation Army and defect to Jumbo's side, instantly creating the new Heel/Face dynamics that would run the next five years or so. It's pretty crazy that it all happened at once.

What really strikes me about this match is how bitter and angry Jumbo comes off as, he seems flustered and almost obsessively overwhelm Misawa, like he feels that if he loses to Misawa again his crown has truly been ripped from him. It's such an amazing performance
