Dante's Peak was mainly set in Wallace, Idaho, Mount Saint Helens, Washington, and Los Angeles County, California. These locations provided the setting for the fictional town and its dormant volcano.

2024-06-17 00:43:10 +0000 UTCMt. St. Helens had been the 5th highest peak in Washington, but she lost over 1,300 ft during the 1980 eruption. I live about 140 miles from Mt. St. Helens. It was close enough that I could see the plumes of steam coming from the mountain. The venting of steam went on for several weeks before the actual eruption took place. Restriction zones were put in place and, later, so were evacuation orders. One notable character who absolutely refused to leave was 83-year-old Harry Truman. He owned and operated Mt. St. Helens Lodge at Spirit Lake. He said if the mountain was going to blow, he was going with it. And, sadly, he did. If you want to see something truly remarkable, check out Dave Crockett’s footage from May 18, 1980 (uncut) on YouTube. Dave Crockett was a Seattle news photographer who was on the mountain when it blew. He filmed his escape from the mountain, surrounded by darkness and struggling for air. It’s unforgettable.
