VACC 02/17/2025 Newsletter

Howdy everyone! Welcome to another week at the cinema club. Matt and I walked you through the calendar for this week via our voices, but now I'm bringing you lots of content including box art and links to the tickets.

First up in the week, we have an Abbot and Costello double feature. Who Done It? with co-hit Abbot + Costello Meet the Invisible Man on Tuesday the 18th at 2PM.

There's lots of movies in these collections. Maybe some others will play at the Cinema Club sometime soon? Remember, one ticket admits you to both movies -- so even if you couldn't make it to the 2PM showing because of a prior commitment, you'd still be able to get in to see them meet the invisible man!

Next up, some Japanese cinema on Wednesday the 19th at 2PM. A little known Kurosawa film called The Idiot.

I use the term "little known" not because you all haven't seen it (you guys are pros, I see you over in the community chat!) -- but rather, it's not one that gets talked about a lot. If you're like me and you weren't alive during the video store boom, you may have never even seen this one on a shelf. I use letterboxd as a pretty good barometer for the youth's tastes ... because what's considered "popular" on that website is typically just new. As far as Kurosawa goes, this one ranks 17th in his filmography, just after Drunken Angel but before Does'ka-den. So, for all my millennials and gen-z out there (and maybe even a few gen alpha), check this show out! Impress your cinephile friends with your Kurosawa knowledge.

Now, for my pick of the week. On Thursday the 20th at 7:30PM, we are showing Pufnstuf.

Thanks to Unruly Julie for programming this, especially in an evening slot! That means that all of us H.R. Pufnstuf enthusiasts can get off work and come see the show. The box is making me trip out already.

Our only evening double feature of the week, we have classics: Dangerous with co-hit Alice Adams playing on Friday the 21st at 7:30PM.

Both of these movies are Archives originals, with Alice Adams being 6370 and Dangerous being 7336. I love seeing all of the original stickers.

As mentioned this month, the Cinema Club is doing head to head "combat" with actors and actresses to see who you all think should have won the Academy Award that year. When it comes to this lineup, we have Bette Davis versus Katharine Hepburn. I'll let you guys decide who wins!

And rounding out the week we have Matt's pick of the month. It's The Legend of Hillbilly John playing on Saturday the 22nd at 7:30PM.

Matt has been extremely excited to watch this one ... I remember months ago him telling me about it and saying he was waiting for the perfect time and place to put this on a calendar. Well, February seemed to be the right spot!

Has anyone else seen this one? Let me know in the comments below.

Well, that's this week at the Cinema Club. I'm traveling over the next few weeks (see some of you at the Texas Theater!), so I'll be taking a hiatus from the cinema club episodes and the newsletters ... the format may change a little, and there may be a small gap between episodes, but until then you can enjoy the free (or paid) versions of our main show and still catch some great titles at the Cinema Club.

Well, bon voyage for me! Make sure you get your tickets, and see you at the movies!
