Episode 513: Popeye

Ag gag gag gag gag! Right, that's it—no more Popeye impressions. Except, of course, the impressions of the Popeye games covered by myself (Stuart Gipp) and my nemesis-cum-pal, the hilarious Dave Bulmer. We talk about Nintendo's brilliant arcade title as well as subsequent handheld efforts, not to mention an extended digression to talk about Don Priestly's utterly amazing ZX Spectrum title. Plenty of Popeye memories, childish jokes and general retrogaming silliness abound, including a live discovery so earth-shattering that I cannot bring myself to spoil it here.

There are plenty of genres here, though we make it all the way from 1983 to 2022 somehow, thanks to an extremely recent release that puts a perfect little pin on Popeye's gaming career, as he fades into Twitter influencer ignominy. Imagine Popeye using THAT word. He'd struggle, wouldn't he? Ag gag gag gag gag gagnominy.

Episode 513: Popeye

Comments

This has to be the most British episode yet, quite a feat to eclipse the Dizzy episode.

Hands down the best joke I've ever read involving the word "ignominy".

You went a whole Popeye episode without (I think?) mentioning Poopeye.

The Bangers and Mash theme is my Manchurian Candidate-esque trigger tune.

I feel like Gipp is feeling self-conscious about the delete the ROMs after 24 hours joke, but I also feel like it's become a part of the retronauts lexicon. Loud and proud, Stuart! Like Parish and his xevious and heiankyo alien references. Nobody is tired of it.

I think Stuart is experiencing some apprehension about the Mario movie based on Illumination fatigue, he references "Well that just happened" as a tired line in these kinds of movies. But the thing people are excited about in regards to the various trailers for it, is so far all of them have explicitly NOT had any material in them like "He's right behind me isn't he", "THAT just happened", any hint of a pop soundtrack, or any of the dreadful tropes of modern kids movies.

"....There was no expectation that you'd complete a game" Okay! that clears things up. Childhood friend had a C64 with a copy of Head Over Heels* - Isometric maze action title ala Knight Lore by the same people that made Batman. engrossing to explore, but huge and no saves. It was months before we got through maybe a third of the game. Knowing that gettig to the top of that particular mountain is an Achievement in Itself makes me feel better. * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_over_Heels_(video_game)

Great episode. I’d listen to Stuart and Dave talk about anything.

I knew Dave and I would bleat on ceaselessly about the Spectrum game and I wanted to spare Bob the tedium

Stuart Gipp

Any reference to Popeye instantly makes me think of Franklin Sherman from The Critic.

Craig

It looks like the Dokapon series may explain the Popeye/Flintstones mechanic...

Adam Elmahdi

My biggest take is I don't fuck with any Popeye after Fleischer

I can't believe the Macster wasn't invited. I'm starting to think that he and Stugip are the same person.
