Episode 523: Super Metroid + The Metroidvania, Pt. I

Imagine my surprise to realize that, despite all the many conversations we've had about the Metroid series and the metroidvania format, we've never had a full-on dedicated Super Metroid episode. So, here we go: An episode dedicated specifically to the game, vis-a-vis the ways its design, mechanics, and narrative drew from the games before it while informing the many works that followed it. Diamond and Stuart and I delve into the conversation, which—yes, once again—proves to be too immense to fit into a single episode. So, we'll have to circle back soon. (Hopefully you don't mind.)

Okaythat is IT! I've cut myself off this episode after 30 minutes, I will bloody well fire up the Switch and dive into Super Metroid yet again and try to get through my overplayed-in-school-whilst-bludging-off-schoolwork adversion to the game and enjoy the juicy, atmospheric content within! Then I'll allow myself to listen to the rest >: (

this is an excellent question

If you download a rom but then lose an hour to daylight saving time, do you have to delete it within 23 hours?

"I accidentally played Shit Baseball" made me laugh way too hard

I played Zero Mission before I ever played Super Metroid, and I ended up finding movement in Super Metroid to be very cumbersome. (Especially in the final third of the game, which relies heavily on wall jumps and the space jump). Playing Super Metroid for the first time on the Virtual Console was an odd experience, because I could see why everyone else loved the game, but I was never able to love it myself.

we had a general-purpose Metroid episode out around the release of Metroid Dread, but never a Super Metroid-focused podcast

Hell yeah! Stuart sneaking in with Sanrio World Smashball praise! Talk about the definition of a hidden gem on the SNES! I'd listen to a Sanrio episode just to hear you gush about it. They should remake it and add Aggretsuko characters.

The deliberate weight and movement of Super Metroid kinda makes me think that the controls in Zero Mission kinda of retcon Samus' suit. Fusion Suit Samus moves quickly, and I think that's partly because you're not in your big heavy powersuit. Before Zero Mission, every pre-Fusion Samus moved like a tank, and I'm kind of sad we've lost that.

So good! Thank you. Happy to learn about this obscure game for the first time.

Thanks for another fantastic episode! I know Diamond touched on romhacks and randomizers for this game. I hope in the next episode you can squeeze in some more discussion about them as hacks like Super Metroid: Eris are amazing 'video game fanfiction' for us SM diehards. Also - someone needs to research and talk about the combination randomizer of Super Metroid and A Link to the Past. The fact that the games are just perfectly designed within the restrictions of the super nintendo to be mashed together has made the single best randomizer I've ever played. Cheers and appreciate your efforts as always!

I must have "Mandala Effected" a Super Metroid episode existing already. Even if it only existed in an alternative timeline I can't complain about a second Super Metroid episoide!

This is why I love to support Retronauts - an episode just about Super Metroid, and there’s more to come!

I'm an idiot so we're halfway there.

Hun, wake up, new Stu and Diamond episode dropped. Patreon Goal Idea: Stu and Diamond travel the world like “An Idiot Abroad” and review local video game culture. Bonafide hit.
