Episode 578: Mega Man Comics

Nadia: This month on Retronauts, Nadia still can't shut up about comic books. Doesn't she know those things are full of violence and filth?! Just look at the Mega Man comic series Archie ran through the '10s!

We jest, we jest. Not about Mega Man and comics, though. We're very serious about that. Which is why Nadia dragged two specific guests onto this show. We have Ian Flynn, author of the aforementioned non-filthy Mega Man comic series and Image's current Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. We also have David Oxford, Nadia's other half for 20+ years and fellow author of the Mega Man X Maverick Hunter's Field Guide.

Archie's Mega Man comic run garnered a lot of praise for its sharp writing and deep exploration of robotic self and sentience. That's on top of a lot of kickass robot fights. But oh, it was gone too soon. Archie put Mega Man on "permanent hiatus" (i.e. Mortis) in 2015, just as everything was getting really good.

But what made the Mega Man comic good, exactly? Where was the story going? What's Mr. A. Andrews like? Why did he put my texts on read? Ian, Nadia, and David have a deep, involved discussion that's the specialty of all old people who spent most of their lives fixated on a blue boy waving around a blue gun.

While it's unfortunate that it stopped at MM3, at least it didn't end at MM4, which is the worst of the original series. I would've loved to see MM5 adapted, constantly having to turn the comic upside-down for Gravity Man.
