Episode 580: The Mario 3D Ranking Hootenanny

We have followed up at long last on Episode 445, the Mario 2D Ranking Hootenanny, in a new dimension. The third dimension! Now, this is not about Mario games with 3D graphics; it is about Mario games that actually incorporate the third dimension in a meaningful way. Which is to say, they add an extra axis of movement to the action. So Mario Wonder, not even a consideration. New Super Mario? Nope. But Super Mario 3D Land? I mean, it has "3D" right there in the title.
So, this is a smaller sample set than some of our other hootenanny efforts, but still one with meaning! As always, we (myself, Nadia, Diamond, Kevin, and Stuart in spirit) rank the games in our hearts, compare and add up those numbers, and then look at the sums to determine which is officially the greatest of the set. These rankings are final and official as always, so please prepare to adjust your personal opinions accordingly.

2023-12-22 08:12:03 +0000 UTCFor me, Sunshine and 3D World are the only Mario games I lost interest in less than halfway through. I full-cleared Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy, and I came close to full-clearing Odyssey and Galaxy 2 (except for some parts that were just too hard for me). Mario 3D Land sits in this awkward space where I beat the first half of the game, and then felt burned out when I started the second half.
