Episode 657: Sonic + Knuckles Pt. 4

Stuart: What else is there to say? Look, we’ve done three of these now, you know what you’re getting into. This is part four, and there’s one more left—that’ll be in the new year. Then it’ll be finished and your life will suddenly feel almost impossibly empty. In the meantime, please do enjoy this continued extensive examination of the Sonic & Knuckles part of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, with delightful cover art by Amy Bulmer.

Have you been looking at the cover art for these episodes, by the by? It’s all been rather good, hasn’t it? I have been wanting to use mostly new-to-Retronauts artists for these, and I think you should go and look at them. I don’t know what else to say about the podcast really, it’s the next one of the five, and when they’re all out I believe (quite genuinely) that we’ll have something of a seminal piece of game appreciation on our hands. That’s not intended to be self-aggrandising in an egotistical sense—as I’ve mentioned before, this sort of thing is exactly what I wanted to do when I got started on Retronauts and it brings me a lot of joy to be able to do it with such interesting, informed, entertaining people.

The response to these episodes has been wonderfully positive and affirming, with near-constant requests for the next part. I know they’ve been pretty spaced out, I’ve just had a lot of other things to cover and during COVID I recorded… well, let’s just say far too many podcasts. But yes, there’s just this one and the finale to come and that’ll be all she wrote for Sonic 3 & Knuckles on Retronauts. Thankfully, it won’t be all she wrote for Sonic the Hedgehog, as I have several episodes in the can and several more planned. Gotta space ‘em out, though. You know. Other franchises are available.

Great episode, no notes. Please do a 3 hour Metroid Fusion episode with ShayMay.

Honestly felt a shiver down my spine when the Sandopolis Act 2 kicked in...most traumatic childhood video experience. Amazing episode though- that setpiece in Lava Reef Act 2 really is spectacular, and there needs to be more Eastenders references on podcasts in general.

Another excellent S3&K episode! I always thought the spinny propeller things on top of Flying Battery look like yellow pencils. Also the Toxic Misters are probably the enemies that kill me the most now. Easy to get caught by them with zero rings, which is instant death.

The ghosts in Sandopolis Zone Act 2 gave me such anxiety as a child, but it was all worth it to experience Lava Reef Zone Act 1. I wish there was a real Act 2, by which I mean it feels so different, Act 2 should've been Hidden Palace Zone Act 1.

For some reason pocket cast isn't downloading the cover art and I'm missing out! Can't wait to listen, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is one of my favorite games of all time, so this in depth discussion has been very enjoyable!

I will not hear any slander against Flying Battery Zone Act 2's music. That opening riff! Anyway, all the talk about "what might have been" with Flying Battery Zone's position in S3&K had me making parallels with Sonic's future. The idea of Sonic leaping straight into Ice Cap Zone snowboarding on the door from Flying Battery put into mind the opening of Sonic Adventure 2, where Sonic tears of a chunk of the G.U.N. aircraft and boards down City Escape on it. And to think, if Sonic *had* made the landing in Sandopolis Zone, he'd have been sandboarding five years before Tails did so in Sonic Adventure's Sand Hill.

TheLupineOne

Oh no, Shay! What you've done with the electic shield mechanic is conflated the OG Flying Battery with a thing you can do in Sonic Mania. You must flee! Flee from Suart's inevitable wrath!!
