I’d like to just sincerely say, I love you guys!

Last couple days I’d been really down on myself. And you guys really cheered me up.

The New York Times has just put out a crappy article on steampunk, declaring it “not long for this earth” (funny, they’ve been saying that for a decade now. How long does it take to prove them wrong?)

I had given interview with NYTimes a week prior, where they asked me baited questions about Steampunk, like “events are much smaller now, huh?” (They are not, and there are more events then ever!) and I gave them proof it’s stronger then ever (which it is).

But when they ran the article, they skipped all the evidence I gave Of steampunks growth...along with making the statement saying “music isn’t really important in steampunk”.

Obviously, I was ticked off, and depressed.

But yesterday you guys all said such nice things, in regards to my idea about the introspection albums! I read them all, and it really made my day!

I really want to encourage you to consider your positive comments just as important as your patronage. It’s both together that keep Abney Park going stronger, and continuing to create. I choose what to create based on what you guys say, or how much you interact with a thing.

Anyway, you made my day.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

What I want is for Steampunk to fall out of the mainstream's eye (remember the Justin Bieber moment? *shudder*) so the posers will go on to the next thing, and us REAL Steampunks can carry on unmolested, like my Goth friends went through in the late '80s/early '90s.

The writer of the article had one tiny comment on his Tweet of it and zero retweets. I think steampunk fans should all go comment, respectfully. Show him it's not dead, and maybe even post links to the music you love showing it does indeed matter? I commented. Here is the link if you would like to as well. Remember, to be curteous. :) https://twitter.com/AlexwilliamsNYC/status/996217572088537089

I empathize, but you do seem a very strong man that will make beautiful art from your woes. We have to go through many things in order to come out stronger, fuller, on the other side. Namaste.

"Steampunk", much like New Wave, Heavy Metal and Grunge, has cemented itself as a music Genre. It's not a fad, it's here to stay. And Abney Park is a leader in that Genre! May the Captain and his Crew sail the Ophelia well into the Apocalypse and beyond!!

Your music has helped me in some dark times and I LOVE IT! I'm more than happy to be a one crazy kitten cheering section for you if it helps you during your dark times and I know that you have a LOT of fans who feel the same way! We love you and your work! <3 If you ever need cheering up you have but to ask your fans and I for one will be there cheering you on and trying to life your spirits!

I stopped reading mainstream media a long time ago. They present what they want people to believe. As Doctor Who once said, "The very powerful, and the very stupid, do not alter their opinions to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their opinions, which can be very uncomfortable when you are a fact that needs altering." Apparently, we are a fact they need to alter.

I couldn’t agree more. Interesting enough, I look up the definition of “propaganda” the other day, to double check I was using it right. The definition said “news that tries to persuade you to a certain opinion.” Doesn’t it seem like almost all news articles fit the definition of propaganda these days?

This is precisely why I don't read movie reviews or most other crap that mass media says about culture issues. They always have an agenda and they normally aren't dialed in enough to know what they're talking about. So screw 'em. We love you guys, and that's all there is to it.

James Fellrath

I very much agree. When they wrote the first article on steampunk, ten years ago, their angle was “this’ll never catch on.” I dissagreed, and they only published stuff I said that made it look like I agreed. This time around, they came back to say, “see, it didn’t catch on, like we thought.” I gave them hundreds of examples of its success, and growing momentum... and they didn’t print any of it.

Thank you Lois!

NY Times have been irrelevant for years! They just don't know it yet lol! But seriously, you are the back bone of a music genre that breathes. It is alive!

Lois Milare

sounds like the article writer already knew what he or she wanted to say and was just looking for info to support what they wanted to say.

Chris Ellsworth

Seriously, the Times is full of dipshits these days. Ignore them, do what you love, and find the fans who love it too.

I roll my eyes at everyone who thinks steampunk is a flash in the pan. THANK YOU for being a visible, positive force in steampunk and for inspiring others.

We all struggle with different things in different genres, but I think what we all have in common is we get down on ourselves. It's hard not to take these kinds of things personally, BECAUSE THEY ARE! In every way. This little post actually cheered me up, just knowing I'm not alone makes a huge difference! Thank YOU, Skye. We love you right back!

Thank you so Much!
