It all followed the secret agent on Mars memory implant, so it was probably all a dream. After all when in the chair at Recall, the lady handed the young assistant a disc and he said "Blue sky on Mars, that's a new one" which was basically the ending.
The problem is the dreams he had of Mars and Melina which were essential elements of his adventure. Unless his life at home with the dreams were part of the implant then everything being a dream doesn't make sense as there's no way he could dream exactly what Melina looked like as her image appeared on the monitor. Of course his brain could've superimposed her appearance on the female choice and the recall stuff was all part of his implant. But dreaming of Mars before recall makes no sense if it's all a dream.
It's the best mindfuck yet.

Your expressions when Benny betrayed them looked like the fish faces when Cohagen kicked over the fish tank.

A major scientific problem iwth this is the rapidity with which Mars gained the atmospheric pressure required to save Quaid and Melina. Some vapour washing over them would allow them to partially breathe but their bodies exploding wouldn't stop because the entire planet needs to be filled with gas enough for gravity to create atmospheric pressure. Even if there were alien machine installations activated simultaneously across the planet it would still take a long time to achieve sufficient pressure. Mars doesn't have a decent electromagnetic field necessary to stop losing atmosphere to space, but perhaps the machine creates that.

There was a time in my life as a teenager back in the 80s/90's, where my friends and I went to the cinema just about each week and there were always these crazy, funny, action, Sci-fi, horror films coming out. And looking back I feel really priveliged and appreciative to have seen them at the ages I was. So nowdays, even with that nostalgic memory, I can genuinely say these Arnold Sci-Fi films still hold up as being some of the best films made, even by today's audience's expectations. Kinda setting the benchmark on how to make fun interesting movies.

I saw this movie on the big screen and have seen it probably another dozen times since then and I never noticed Melina's beauty mark, but Sam sees it in the first few seconds of the movie through the faceplate of a spacesuit AND uses it as a tool to identify the character's connection to the woman selection program at Recall.

I love the look on Sam's face whenever anything that you wouldn't want to say or do in front of a woman happens. lol

Awesome!! Thank you for all the great Arnie suggestions! We clearly have a lot of films to catch up on haha. I saw a trailer for Maggie and thought it looked super interesting but never got around to watching it! Definitely excited to check it out

Here's a couple of notable Arnold movies that I really like which you may or may not have seen: True Lies (1994; dir. James Cameron) and Conan the Barbarian (1982; dir. John Milius, co-written by Milius and Oliver Stone).
He also starred in a zombie movie, Maggie, which is a low-budget character piece where he really got to show some of his dramatic acting skills. Admittedly, he's way out of his element here (vs. action), but I thought he pulled it off.
If you're in the mood for an Arnie action/popcorn movie, there's also The 6th Day.
Maybe the slower paced Escape Plan with Sly Stallone as well.

This is definitely the craziest movie Arnold Schwarzenegger has ever done.

Another old Arnold movie you may not have heard about is "The Running Man" (1987).

With The thing, Jacob’s Ladder and Total Recall messing with your mind I’m hoping Memento makes it to your next vote.

Always interesting on the second viewing. The technician doing the implant says “blue sky on Mars. That’s a new one”.
Your faces when Quato says “give me your hands” is hilarious.
