That’s why the greatest cut is the 6-hour TV version. Is is SUPPOSED to be 89% sheer fecking boredom, 1% elation at hitting a target, and 10% pants-sh*ting horror.

I kind of wish you chose to see the English dubbed version of this, even though it's frowned upon by cinephiles. Because all the English language dialogue was recorded by all the German actors in the film. And you get to listen to the original German cast perform their roles in English. So, that makes it ok.

When the one guy agitatedly says something like "I wish we'd see some action already", it wasn't for love of combat. These guys know that combat is inevitable, it's why they're out there. The waiting for combat is super stressful and you just want to get that first one over with.

It’s not (fully) in German, but Valkyrie is pretty great for a Tom Cruise-led Hollywood WW2 thriller.

Bruno Ganz was astonishing, as was most of the cast.

Enjoyed my first reaction with both of you. Plenty of other good German language war films if you are ever interested, either for possible reactions or private viewing. Downfall (multiple awards and astonishing acting) and Stalingrad (1993) are two of the better ones.

It is implied that Thomsen's U-Boat was sunk after their meeting at sea. U-96 loses contact and the Captain mentions that the destroyers are missing from the convoy because they musy be chasing another boat. This was most likely Thomsen.

Oh man! Great movie!
And since you've entered the genre of the World War 2 submarine movie... you HAVE to check out "U-571".
