Added 2016-01-29 18:36:16 +0000 UTCAnd again, thank you for taking the plunge and helping to support me in doing what I love. I'll have a more substantial blog post ready in the next couple days, but for now, here's my top 5 anime of the current season:
5. Phantasy Star Online 2
This show is trying its hardest to sell you the phantasy star online 2 game, and that would normally be offputting, but it's just so endearingly bad at it. Plays almost like a PSA on the basics of MMOs, except set in a horrifying dystopia where all education is run by Sega and Alex Kidd watches you bathe. So dumb I can't help loving it.
4. Akagami ga Shirayuki Hime (snow white with the red hair)
This beautifully animated fantasy romance has pretty much nothing to do with Snow White aside from the core conceit of a beautiful woman running away from the ruler of her kingdom, but it's still oozing with Disney-esque charm. If you want to get swept up in something magical and wondrous, look no further.
3. Konosuba (or Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o!)
An uproarious comedy about a hikikomori who goes out to get a special edition of a new MMO and dies, then ends up in a fantasy world a lot like an RPG. He quickly finds himself in the worst party in the world: the healer is a moron, the wizard has severe chuunibyou, and the tank likes taking damage a little too much... Has a very dark but playful sense of humor which I adore - somewhat reminiscent of Rick and Morty and South Park. It's been a long time since I've seen an anime this funny.
2. Boku Dake ga Inai Machi (AKA ERASED)
This is one of the best thriller-style mystery anime I've seen in years, possibly since Monster. Highly recommend going in unspoiled to experience the impeccable direction, acting, and animation for yourself. Though you probably have already, considering how popular this show is.
1. Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
It was a tough choice between this and ERASED for the top slot, but ultimately, I feel like I've got to give it to this hilarious and touching period drama for its great performances and direction. Not a lot of shows can suck you into 5 straight minutes of standup, but this one manages to do it twice an episode. If you want to know more about Japanese culture or just get sucked up in a damn good drama, give this show a watch.
