A Painfully Honest (And Uncensored) Review of Netflix Avatar

Super glad to hear someone give the Speed Racer adaptation the praise it deserves for being so ahead of its time.

Well said! I didn't mind the show, though I didn't particularly like it. My opinion on it was basically 'well, that sure was a show that existed.' Though honestly, I think the parts that annoyed me the most on just, like, a personal level were pretty small in the grand scheme of things. I didn't like that Zuko actually FOUGHT BACK against his father in their agni kai; the fact that he refused to even stand up in the original said some pretty key things about his character. Also Ozai is just ... way too front and center. Like, I get it, if I had the opportunity to put Daniel Dae Kim's face on screen as often as possible, I would do that, but I personally would have liked for them to sacrifice some of the Fire Nation's screen time in favor of cut content from the rest of the world. Like, it's a world that's been at war for a century. I'm sure they could figure out a way to focus on it in a way that seemed grown up enough.

Great video Geoff, really appreciate the work you and the team did with this. Upon reflecting on your question of why, the reason I came to is its content that the olds may enjoy. I firmly believe the cartoons are for kids is more of a Gen X and Boomer mentality then Millennials and Gen Z's, given that i feel like those demographics may tune in for a live action adaptation more than a cartoon.

Thank you for this, particularly the Zuko-Iroh bits. Besides renewing my interest in this adaptation—I’m not excited, exactly, but at least kind of intrigued now that I have more of a feel for it—it made me want to finally sit down and read ‘The Promise’, which I bought ages ago but never actually got to. But man, I really should just rewatch the show. They can never take that away from us at least! And yeah, the ‘animation is for kids’ thing annoys me to no end. I am pretty sure that Beauty and the Beast remains to this day the only traditionally animated (well, mostly! props to Pixar for the ballroom bits!) feature to /ever/ be nominated for the general Best Picture Oscar. It lost to ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, which, y’know, I can live with, but I wonder if that could have sent a message, had it won. (Also, RIP Howard Ashman, we are so deprived. And on that note, fuck Reagan.) *Anyway*, yeah. It’s too bad that risk-taking seems to simply verboten now. I don't actually like being cynical, but that side of me gets massively reinforced any time one of these is made. I am glad this show has redeeming qualities, and is not just ruined by e.g. Sokka not having a real arc, but y'know. I like being excited about stories and media, and I don't really feel that very often anymore, at least outside of the anime sphere, because of stuff like this :/

Um actually, it wasn't the 80's Super Mario Bros movie, it was a 90's Super Mario Bros movie???
