Dead Poets Society (1989) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

The first time I watched this movie I was angry at what I felt was an artificial antagonism constructed by the plot in the "evilness" of Neil's father, resulting in the suicide of Neil, and the vindictiveness of the faculty towards Keating to blame him for the tragedy - it really didn't make sense to me. I *did* enjoy - and still enjoyed watching again, a story about a free spirit teacher trying to impart that free spirit in a setting that's not conducive to do that - a stuffy upper class prep school. Robin William's performance really sells that, as do the performances of the students. It didn't really need the heavy plot points at the end to make that point - it seemed like a Hollywoodian need to make a "bad guy(s)" - and not a realistic one at that. Anyway, watching it again, that doesn't bother me as much and was able to enjoy the performances- esp. Robin Williams and Robert Sean Leonard as Neil.
Anyway, recommendations:
For further Peter Weir films:
- Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) - A very haunting (not in the scary sense), ethereal film. A must watch.
- Witness (1985) - Thriller starring Harrison Ford
-Fearless (1993) - With Jeff Bridges
- The Truman Show (1998) - If you haven't seen it, the less said the better.
For Ethan Hawke:
- Gattaca (1997) - Sci-Fi, but a very different take on Sci-Fi
-Training Day(2001)
-Boyhood (2014)
For Robin Williams: Too many to mention, I like his more serious roles:
- The World According To Garp (1982)
- Moscow on the Hudson (1984)
- One Hour Photo (2002)
Gone to soon.

This is my favorite poem - it is by Carl Sandburg
LIMITED
I AM riding on a limited express, one of the crack trains
of the nation.
Hurtling across the prairie into blue haze and dark air
go fifteen all-steel coaches holding a thousand people.
(All the coaches shall be scrap and rust and all the men
and women laughing in the diners and sleepers shall
pass to ashes.)
I ask a man in the smoker where he is going and he
answers: "Omaha."

I first saw this in high school during my senior year in class. My freshman year we had to write a poem and read it in front of the class. I plagiarized mine out of a book of poetry. It was written by a teenager. I went to great lengths to make my inauthentic poem seem authentic. 😉
After I finished reading it, I got applause and one girl looked at me lovingly and said, “Wow, Jeff. That…was…AMAZING!” I felt anything but amazing, however, newfound fangirl notwithstanding. In fact. I was overwhelmed with guilt. Perhaps it was the lapsed Catholic in me, but I vowed to never again plagiarize anything I had written.
Jump cut to sophomore year of high school. In English class I fell in love with poetry and began writing my own. American and English poetry. My early poems were very much like song lyrics and that’s how I composed them in my head. Looking back on it, a lot of them were really crappy. A lot of Hallmark Card type stuff. “I love you/Everything you do/Do you love me?/Why don’t we see?” LOL But at that age, if it rhymes it works. Then, as I got a bit older and have more life experiences, my poetry evolved.
In fact, I wrote a poem last year inspired by my ex and I will share it on Patreon. Needless to say, I love this movie although I also was not expecting the dramatic turn. In senior year I became assistant editor of our Creative Writing literary magazine. The most fun I ever had in a classroom. We’re all still friends to this day. Carpe Diem!
Anyways, without further ado, here is the poem I wrote:
“Soulmate”
It’s been twenty-four hours,
I gaze at the flowers,
That once were in bloom in the spring.
But now they’re all dying,
It looks like they’re crying,
As the birds start to sing.
They sing about sorrow,
But maybe tomorrow,
A new song is what they will bring.
Until then they’re flying,
It sounds like they’re sighing,
‘Cause I never gave you a ring.
You told me it was over,
I was no more your lover,
Your best friend and everything.
Your first date and soulmate,
As you start to extrapolate,
The words soon begin to sting.
I gave you my heart,
My music, my art,
My blood, my sweat, and my tears.
You gave me the same,
I wanted to give you my name,
Along with the next fifty years.
Sweetie, I miss you,
Really want to kiss you,
Hold you and never let you go.
I’m still thinking about you,
But I must live without you,
The Magic 8 Ball says so.
If you should ever come back,
I’ll be at the cul de sac,
With both arms open wide.
No judgments, no worries,
We’ll melt the tear flurries,
I pray that our love hasn’t died.

Considering that I am bald, I would argue that Shakespeare is a gateway drug to Rogaine. 😉

This was Robin Williams’ first Oscar nomination for Best Actor and Matt Damon and Ben Affleck auditioned for this movie but didn’t get it and then went on to win Robin his Oscar about a decade later

In the end, Todd found his voice. Always my favorite part.
There’s an interview Ethan Hawke did talking about working with Robin Williams here that’s so great. Hope you all get to watch it :)

I took a girl to see this in theaters as a date. Good movie…not a good date movie, at least not to create certain moods. 😁

I knew this would be a tough reaction given the really dark turn at the end. Definitely glad you guys enjoyed. This one meant a lot to me over the years.

What a great Funny Intro Guys ;) Peter Weir is a Great Film Maker!! I Recommend "Gallipoli" from 1981and "The Year of Living Dangerously" from 1982 !! Both Great Films with Mel Gibson at his early career !!! My favorite one is "Witness" from 1985 with Harrison Ford and Danny Glover, and "Truman Show" from 1997 with Jim Carrey

I am 2 minutes 51 seconds in to the video and my brain is totally frazzled ,I was not in the right head space ,nor was I prepared for that intro
I am about to take a 10 minute break and get some fresh air in the back garden to refresh my mindset before starting the reaction
