Another great movie with Penelope Ann Miller is The Shadow. Comic book movie from the director of Highlander.

As for the opinion of his Hispanic accent being ridiculously funny ... that's a solid response. But that's not because his performance is bad. Now if Viggo did a perfect Hispanic accent, THAT would be ridiculous -- but not funny -- because that would've gone against character (and why cast a Danish American for this role just to speak in perfect Spanish). You picked up the fact that it's not perfect (far from it, in fact), and thats a testament to what Viggo was doing. Its a spot-on character performance and grading his accent as imperfect goes along with that.

I love Pachino’s performance in this movie.

Yeah he wasnt trying to be a Latino character, either. Viggo was playing a character that was (changing 'most likely' to 'maybe') Polish and grew up in a Spanish neighborhood. He may have mimicked the accent to fit in with the neighborhood kids, so it's not fully developed. Or, again he was just influenced by who he hung around with and again, didn't fully develop it. I'll go even further --- maybe he got a job in Spanish Harlem and thought sounding like everyone else would get him accepted and he stuck with it. Whatever the backstory is, Lalin's accent isn't supposed to be perfect; it's supposed to be adopted and therefore not a true Spanish accent. Credit to Viggo for getting it. It's possible that he was cast not just because he impressed casting, but Viggo (Danish American) grew up in Venezuela and Argentina and may have picked up an accent that he could use to not sound so perfectly Spanish, but who knows.

I meant latino, not latin. His hispanic accent was ridiculously funny. Either way it was a his worst performance ever.

Viggo's character isn't Latin. His full name is Lalin Miasso, and it's most likely that his family immigrated from Poland or Italy (Miasso's origin is Italian); Lalin is a Jewish name. Of course, he grew up in New York. This means that his character may have mimicked the accent to fit in with the neighborhood kids, so it's not fully developed. Or, he was just influenced by who he hung around with and again, didn't fully develop it. But he's certainly not 'trying to be a Latin character'. David Koepp wrote the script and he doesn't just choose last names out of a hat; there's a reason why he went with Lalin Miasso.

No Sam, I disagree. He was laughable trying to be a latin character. Watch Green Book (2018), He is truly fantastic in that

I can't believe this mediocre Pacino flick beat out Donnie Brasco.

what a great film--that train station shootout is perfection. Sean Penn is unrecognizable , Al Pacino gives his usual fantastic performance! sooo glad you guys got to watch it together!

This movie was made around the same time as Scent of a Woman. Two completely different characters. This is way Pacino is one of my favorite actors he has such a wide range.

Great reaction you two! I saw this movie in the theater as a kid the first day it came out and I loved it then and love it now. You guys asked something, if I heard you right, that made me actually laugh out loud, as I don't believe I've ever heard anyone in his more than 50 year career wonder to which ethnicity Al Pacino belongs. While he certainly is a brilliant actor and has convincingly played many different types of people, I can assure you he is 100% Italian American. In fact, his grandparents (at least some of them) came from, of all places, Corleone Sicily.

Carlito's string of decisions, as you highlighted, carried better options that would have de-escalated or avoided situations but he went against due to his human nature, which makes him a fantastic protagonist. I cant relate to Carlito's background but I can relate to making bad decisions that were based on close-relationship obligations (some of which were not the good relationships I thought they were). Great reaction! I could tell you two were really into this one

Carlito should’ve killed Benny Blanco in that alley. Even though he was trying to get out of that lifestyle his rep was on the line. The streets is always watching like he said. And killing Carlito would give Benny rank and power

There are 3 other De Palma movies you haven't watched for the channel that I'd highly recommend
Blow Out
Phantom of the Paradise
Dressed to Kill
He's an amazing director, takes a lot from Hitchcock.

Like they said, Benny Blanco was basically Carlito 20 years ago. Carlito's hatred about who he used to be blinded his better judgment. He should've treated Benny with even a small bit of respect because he is a legitimate threat. I think Carlito lost his edge in prison. It made him a better man, but doomed him in the streets.

Great film! I honestly think it would have worked a little better without revealing the ending at the start.

this was pretty much the first notable role for Viggo Mortensen, his first 2 movies were really tiny roles with not much dialogue, so this can be considered the beginning of his career. Just to think that less than a decade later he would be The King in LOTR trilogy!

You guys have inadvertently started a director Brian De Palma series by watching:
"The Untouchables", “Scarface”, “Carrie”, and “Carlito’s Way”.
I would suggest his suspense thriller “Dressed To Kill” next. 😁

If you have ever played GTA Vice City, Ken Rosenberg is directly based on Kleinfeld from this movie.
