The director and star reunited for another movie which I think is even better. It's a war movie called A Very Long Engagement. Highly recommend.

Since you two liked this movie, there is a French sci-fi/fantasy movie called "City of the Lost Children" (1995) by the same director (Jean-Pierre Jeunet). It's done in the same tone and visual style. It's one of my favorites. I'm sure you will be into it. 👍

My favorite part is her father thinking young Amelie's has a heart condition because it beats so fast during his examination. Also, similar to you Daniel, I misremembered a scene where Amelie was the face of the girl in the painting in the end.

Audrey Tautou (Amélie) is a really big name in French cinema. She played Coco Chanel and did a lot of romantic comedies and dramas. A really talented performer. Her only major Hollywood role is playing the female lead in The Da Vinci Code (2006).
Mathieu Kassovitz (Nino) is also a director. He received the Best Director prize at Cannes for his film Hate ("La Haine"). That film was Vincent Cassel's (The Night Fox in the Ocean movies) breakthrough role in France.
Kassovitz also has a cameo in The Fifth Element. He's the guy that tries to break into Bruce Willis' appartment. A very good movie featuring him is Steven Spielberg's Munich (2005).
I saw this film at a young age and I've seen it many times over the years. The way Georgette says "Quand même" is imprinted in my brain.

I'm not typically attracted to girls with short hair but Amelie is really cute! I love her

If you like this style of cinema, you should also check out "A Very Long Engagement" (2004), by the same director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and also starring Audrey Tautou. It has more action and drama because it's set during WWI, but with the same type of romantic humor. It also has some very impressive, epic, combat scenes. It's a cross between Amélie and Saving Private Ryan.

I like the sound the stones make when she drops them into her pocket. I don't know why.

Looooooooooooove this movie..."I had two heart attacks, an abortion, did crack... while I was pregnant. Other than that, I'm fine."

This movie was the first time I heard of someone liking a film reaction when I saw this 20 years ago. My wife didn’t get it but I always liked seeing people’s emotions during a film in the theater.
Thus, here we all are, in a time where we can watch reactions at home lol
