It had a lot of "not like other girls" messaging. Like the Pretties are teenagers that got state mandated plastic surgury (and were also purposely lobotomized to prevent the general public from doing any revolutions/uprising).

The main characters just look like normal people, but don't meet their society's weirdly strict beauty standards. Of course Netflix makes them look beautiful instead of average, but they can be beautiful by our standards and still not fit the world's definition of beauty, which requires everyone to get plastic surgery at some age
