However, in my early 20's, I moved outside of Detroit, Michigan for about 5 years. The restaurants out there have bastardized cheesesteak in ways I could never have imagined (many also having the audacity to have said cheesesteaks listed on their menus as "Philly Cheesesteak")...do not call a steak sandwich with Swiss, mayonnaise, pickles, and lettuce a Philly Cheesesteak...it Clearly is not. This being said, anyone near (or going to be near) Monroe, MI: go to Vince's East Elm Drive In, on River Raisin, right where E. Elm and N. Custer meet. They know how to make a cheesesteak that might rival any of the ones that I've had in Jersey. I still think about that place on a regular basis, almost 15 years later. Regardless what you get there, it is inexcusable if you do not get their homemade root beer. I didn't even like root beer before I had theirs; now I'm on that heroin addict, chasing-the-dragon bullshit, desperate to find a comparable root beer.
