I believe Sam Kirk getting knocked out is a (and may become a running) gag. Kirk’s brother had a once scene appearance in the Original series episode (Operation Annihilate!) laying dead on the ground, much like knocked out Sam looked in this episode. In TOS of course Kirk’s brother’s corpse was played by William Shatner in a mustache.

On the conversation of "emotional baggage" and how Matt sees new Trek - something I've noticed is that it makes a difference WHEN we get introduced to someone's trauma or baggage. I think there's a difference between introducing a character on a more superficial level (aka how they're like at work) and later delving in to their baggage VERSUS having the introduction to a character be that "this character has baggage so let's see how they deal with it." I'm not making a value judgment of one over the other, simply pointing out that these are two very different ways of getting to know someone. I think the writers on modern Trek are also trying to tap in to the fact that Gen Z-ers and younger Millenials tend to be a lot more open about their emotional baggage and trauma than previous generations. The writers may be looking at a show like Discovery as being the extension of that trend into the future - where people will tell coworkers about the shit they're dealing with as a routine. (Indeed, there's some fascinating psych research that shows that getting oil-rig workers to open up emotionally about things they're struggling with leads to reductions in accidents and injuries - it gets them to ask for help more often, and to admit when they don't know how to do something). But perhaps the issue for Matt might be that with a small number of episodes per season, the Trek writers are trying to do this emotional unloading right from the top, rushing past the process of getting to know the characters as professionals, and right into "my parents died in a shuttlecraft accident."
