James Gunn's Super is a dark, cerebral, and quirky movie that effortlessly combines elements of humor, action, drama, and the superhero genre. There's truly no other movie like it and I respect the hell out of it's ambition. What makes me love it is Gunn's writing and directing, the cast performances, Tyler Bate's hypnotic and surreal score, and it's themes of emasculation and life in general, which in retrospect really reminds me of the themes of Barbie! Glad you enjoyed it, thought it might be up your alley. On a more serious note, this was also a very personal movie for James Gunn. The religious satire comes from the fact that Gunn grew up in a catholic school where children where routinely abused and taken advantage of by the priests, the scene where Libby assaults Frank was based on an real experience Gunn had with a stripper, and the ending where Sarah leaves Frank was based on how Gunn's marriage was fading at the time and he had to accept it. Thankfully that last part worked out and to this day Gunn is good friends with his ex-wife. Looking forward to more movie reactions! I'll be sure to recommend some more movies for the future.
