The stone-paved roads of the Everwood county have kept the North free and prosperous for generations. Safe and fast passage through the dark and deep northern forests have been important trade routes for merchants and highways for armies.
For three winters the roads have not been safe anymore. A group of bandits has been ambushing and attacking caravans on the Everwood roads and grown more powerful and bold more recently. The bandits use magic to prepare their ambushes, defeat any opposition and to escape without a trace.
Robanthon Vargus Everwood, also known as Roban the Black, is the only son of the dead Count Davio Everwood and the lawful heir of the Everwood county. When Count Everwood was betrayed, one of his loyal servants saved his newborn son and he was raised by a retired ranger living the modest life a farmer.
Roban was taught swordsmanship and archery by his adoptive father and he grew into a skilled hunter and capable fighter. He also fought in the Horde Wars against the allied goblin and orc tribes. When Roban returned from the war, he learned that his father was killed by the Everwoods soldiers when he refused to give all their grain, cattle and horses as war taxes. His family and the whole village starved after the soldiers took everything they had. Overwhelmed by wrath Roban turned to the old gods of the forest and plead for help. To his own surprise, his prayers were answered.
A vision leads Roban to an abandoned monastery in the forest. There, behind the spider cobs and rubble, he found a narrow passage to an old library where he found means to learn master his hidden magical talents. With the help of his new spirit patrons, he grew fast into an adept magic-user and soothsayer. With his new magical abilities, he eventually learned who he really was and what had happened to his true family. The anger inside him grew into hatred and he made an oath to seek vengeance and justice for his family.
Roban has gathered a group of capable fighters and with the funds stolen from the Everwood’s false rulers he has helped the starving peasants.
Roban’s actions have begun to worry the rulers of Everwood and especially the Sheriff. Roban the Black has been wanted for almost three years now and the bounty is already quite significant. While the Sheriff of Everwood and his lackeys try to paint a picture of him and his followers as a group of filthy and dangerous bandits using dark magic, he is quite aware of Roban gain the favor of the common folk on his side. He is afraid that Roban will eventually be able to spark a rebellion against the rulers of the Everwood.
