Map Discussion: Mooncore

Ok. We had a poll in May where we voted for the first map project and the winner was Mooncore. For this post, I did a quick draft of Mooncore, or of how it could look like.

The idea is to make a bunch of maps that are all tied to one location or theme. I have written a short introduction of Mooncore below, but besides some loose ideas and one sessions where I have used this location, this is pretty much an open canvas.

You are welcome to introduce your own ideas in the comments or to make wishes for map themes and details, if you like. I would like to take this a step further from a brainstorming session, so you can create places on Mooncore, corporations, NPCs, whatever, and I'll try to incorporate them in this mini-setting. To keep everything together and consistent, I will make final creative decisions, and I cannot promise that every idea will be used as presented, or at all. And just to avoid any trouble or misunderstandings, I would like to state that if this material is ever used in a publication outside of Patreon, I will retain all rights to use this material, but people will be credited as per their reward levels (Hero and up will have named credits).

OK. What do you think? Let's give this a go and see what happens :)

Mooncore

Mooncore is a sprawling and busy space colony built on a small resource rich moon, but not just any moon. Actually it is not even clear if the moon is a natural satellite or a construct. Deep in the core of the moon there is a vast network of tunnels, halls, and chambers of unknown origin. Strange creatures wander in the tunnels, many parts of it are protected with traps, or sealed completely with magic-like unknown technology. Mostly, the function of the tunnels are a mystery.

Space Port

Mooncore is one of the busiest space ports in the region. It is an important milestone between greater trade routes and hyperlanes. It is often used as a refuelling station for voyages through the neutral territory, but also to make deals that would be illegal, or at least questionable, in many other worlds.

Mooncore is a free colony with its own government and laws. The officials of Mooncore do not restrict trade or business done on the station, as long as the security of the station is not compromised. This does not mean the city security would not monitor, or even control, what happens on the station. The city sheriffs and guards are known for their efficiency and hash measures if the security of the station is compromised.

Mining

The moon crust is rich in a rare mineral called amatium. This mineral is used as a critical component in many technologies from nanotechnology to positronics, but its most important use is the production of stable antimatter fuel.

The station started as a mining colony and amatium mining and hyperfuel refining are still a significant industry, but  but now many of the veins have depleted and there are many old mining stations either abandoned altogether or adopted for new purposes.

Tunnels

The tunnel network is built in layers, each level going deeper and becoming more dangerous, but also better preserved and active. Nobody has reached the core yet, and there are many rumors why the core is so well protected. Some claim there is a great treasure hidden at the core, some say the moon is a prison, keeping something terrible contained. Nevertheless, a many adventurer are willing to try their luck and mettle by descending to the tunnels.

There are many corporations, private entrepreneurs and factions that hire teams to explore the tunnels in hopes of finding valuable artifacts or safe passage to deeper levels

Comments

I love it. A few years back i started a draft of a book that details how to build a self-expanding planetoid base. This would be perfect.
