You might find this flying island drifting in the upper atmosphere of a gas giant, near a broken ringworld, or perhaps even in astral space.

At the center of the island, there is a portal of some sort. Maybe the heroes appear on the island through this ancient fargate or they succeed to activate it and open a portal to another long-lost system hidden in a hyperspace fold.
