Jody sees it purely as a mutually beneficial arrangement without emotional attachment, while Sumner agreed because she has genuine feelings for Jody. Over time, Jody shows no signs of developing feelings for Sumner. Sumner contemplates giving up because she knows Jody is actually interested in her childhood best friend, Ava. Though Sumner doesn't know Ava well, she begins to dislike her, seeing her as a competitor, despite knowing it's wrong. This feeling stems from Sumner's unrequited love for Jody.
