About the April Fools Update

Alright, real talk.

I'm not sure how many of you have played the April Fools update by now. But if you have, you'll have seen that it's a completely different game from You Throw Like a Girl.

I’ve been working on You Throw Like a Girl for over six years, and I’m feeling burnt out, which you might have been able to figure out from the slow pace of updates. I’m proud of the game I made, but at this point working on it has started to become a chore.

It feels like it’s both very close to being done, and also that there’s still so much left to do: the trans path, getting your dick back, rewriting Griffin's character, polyamory, a male path that's more fun than "practice football and don't transform."

Working on the game that's in the April Fools update and learning RenPy has been the most fun I've had developing in a while. I still want to get the polyamory update out and finish YTLAG and complete all the paths that are incomplete. But I also want to enjoy the work I do and not feel like it’s a slog.

Are you no longer working on YTLAG?
I
’m not going to stop working on YTLAG. I owe you guys a polyamory update. And I feel bad that the trans path is still incomplete. And I want to finish the other features and complete the game. Hopefully if I’m splitting my time between YTLAG and Ugly Ducklings, work on YTLAG will be more fun. As for what the split will be between this game and YTLAG, I’m not sure. I’ll probably put up a poll soon to see what you guys think.

Wait, were you working on the April Fools update instead of the polyamory update?
No, I've been working on the new game on and off for almost a year. I really am almost done with the polyamory update, and I expect to have it released in a little under a week.

Will you burn out on the new game like you did on YTLAG?
That’s a good question! I can’t guarantee that I won’t burn out on this eventually. But I’ve learned a lot from creating YTLAG that will help me here: the scope was way too big, and the lifesim aspect of it meant that the number of possibilities quickly spiraled out of control. Having 3-4 paths (one for each person you romance) feels a lot more reasonable.

What's the new game about?
You'll have to play it and see for yourself ;)

Comments

burnout is common when you realize that "almost done" is really 90% of the work.

The new game was fun, I'll gladly play it as more updates come out! I know how creative endeavours can burn out before they're done. It happens all the time to most creative people (just look at Game of Thrones). I know I'll often need the energy from a new project to motivate me to finish a previous one. You did the right thing. Take your time and build your space to create in your head. Once you let your ideas flourish in one, you get new ideas for the previous one and they feed each other. Keep it up! We'll be around ;)
