The best of my understanding is that they enjoyed a brief period of being fashionable because they continued the pattern of slashed/paned sleeves on the kirtle or pelisse. I'm not a historical textile or fashion person, so I don't know all the correct terms, but those gloves were an impractical design made for fashion that would match the sleeves of the dress. Instead of showing off ruffles of fine white shirts under the overdress, the gloves allowed one to view the rings on the lady's fingers worn under the glove.

How is the paint you use for conservation different from standard oil and acrylic? I’m new to your group and fascinated by what you do. It makes me appreciate the art world even more.

What great work, as always! I do hope some day you can put the whole painting back together again :) I love the green velvet dress. I'm amazed that the artist could color and shade it just so that it actually looks velvet...I mean I know he is a master artists, lol...it just still gets me when they can do such photographic like realness. I'm going to research the lady's gloves, I'm not sure I quite understand what's going on there, around the knuckles...do they have slits to help with articulation? It's kinda creepy.
