Lardy ladies in literature #2: Boonyi Kaul (page 6)

Took a few small liberties here. The words are still as they appear in the book, apart from the addition or removal of the odd word so that it's (hopefully) clearer to the reader who's speaking.

For those who are interested, Boonyi is actually pregnant at this point in the story - though it's said that she "had grown so obese that her pregnancy had been invisible. It lay hidden somewhere within her fat". The sense I get from the text is that she'd be just as fat if she wasn't pregnant, so I don't feel that omitting to mention the pregnancy from the text really matters.

I've also quite literally glossed over some of the coarser descriptions of Boonyi's physical state at this point in the story. Hey, characters are partly a product of the reader's imagination, aren't they! And this is how I like to imagine her. 😊

Hope you like her. Comments and feedback are always very welcome. I've had real fun with this sequence. There may be a bonus pic, but I'm going to prioritise a few other projects first. I've received a couple of suggestions for the next "lardy lady in literature" to be featured in this series, and I've got a few candidates of my own. I'll do a poll for who should be next over the weekend to let you guys decide who should be next.

All the best,

Hal

Thank you! By coarser descriptions, I mean that in the book she's described as gradually losing her beauty: taking a lot of drugs as well as overeating, teeth rotting, skin coarsening, body odour, etc. In an act of pure self-indulgence, I selectively omitted these things from both the image of Boonyi in my head and my pics of her, simply because that kind of stuff just doesn't do it for me. To borrow a phrase from Raymond Chandler, I prefer a look that's "smooth, shiny and loaded with sin".

Thanks! She essentially lives for food at this point. It's from an "actual" book: Shalimar The Clown by Salman Rushdie, which I think you can get pretty cheap in Kindle. The weight gain section is relatively brief, though are some other good passages - including one in which Boonyi is basically dumped back at her old village after several years, and seen with much astonishment by her old friends (including Shalimar, the title character, who was her husband before she ran off for a life of luxury with the ambassador). She is described by that point as something like "a returning ghost, who'd done nothing in the afterlife but eat".

Coarser descriptions you say? This is excellent, she looks suitably enormous...like she might actually struggle with the door

I love how huge she looks in this image, great job as usual! She is definitely living the life seeing how she got pregnant as well! I for one definitely wouldn’t mind seeing one final image that’s for sure Not sure if I missed it but do you happen to have a link to the story? I would definitely like to read these sections describing her.
