Big enough for two [Threadvember]

This one was an anonymous ko-fi request for some soft Kacchan! Enjoy!

─────

Most of the class had been excited when they were given their new dorm rooms. The first-year dorms had been fine, kitted out with everything they needed, but all just a little small. Their second-year building was something more akin to an apartment block, and the students were excited to have more space – room to spread out, to fit all their furniture without feeling like they were living in a storage shed, and now with actual bathrooms attached to their rooms, instead of just a claustrophobic toilet.

In short, life was good. Except, of course, for the fact that they had to move all of their furniture and belongings out of the old dorms, down through a tiny stairwell, across campus, and back up a tiny stairwell into their new rooms.

Between classmates helping each other out and parents showing up to join the work party, they'd managed to get most of the building set up within one sunny day where there was no risk of a sudden downpour ruining their things. The exception, of course, was one Bakugou Katsuki, who refused to let anyone in his bedroom – old or new. No matter how many times Kirishima had offered to grab an armload of boxes for him, or Uraraka had volunteered to use her quirk on his heavy things, they had been met with snarls and stubborn determination that he didn't need their help.

"How's it all going?" Masaru asked, when Katsuki returned home after a day of packing. "Have you seen the new room yet?"

"Yeah," he grunted, sitting down at the table and letting Masaru set a plate of food in front of him. "They're bigger."

"Oh, that's good! You did say the old ones were a little cramped!"

"They're boring as fuck, though," he mumbled, toying with his rice. "White walls and grey carpet, plain as hell."

"We could find you a nice rug," Mitsuki volunteered, exchanging a look with her husband while Katsuki was distracted by food. "Maybe some artwork for the walls?"

"Or a big noticeboard," Masaru suggested. "To pin your assignments and things on, help with organisation. Then you can put things on it for decoration if you feel like it."

"Yeah, maybe," he nodded, stuffing his mouth full of curry. "I took photos."

"Show us after dinner!" Mitsuki tried to hide her enthusiasm, but a hint of it sneaked out in her tone. "We'll brainstorm some ideas!"

He shrugged it off, but all the same he pulled them up on his laptop when they'd eaten, mumbling a quick explanation of what was what before he disappeared to take a shower. The moment he left the room, Mitsuki was thumping her husband in the arm, whispering at him gleefully.

"He's never cared what his room looked like before!" she gushed. "Our boy is finally growing up! And asking for our help?! Wait, you don't think he's a fake, do you? Some kind of shape-shifting quirk?"

"Maybe he plans on having someone else in his room?" Masaru suggested gently. "Whether it's his friends or..."

"A girlfriend?!"

"Or boyfriend."

"He really is growing up! I need to hear everything!"

"Be careful, you don't need to get into a screaming match with him and end up being pushed away."

"I'll bite my tongue," she sighed dramatically. "I just want to know what kind of person managed to melt our boy's frozen heart!"

True to her word, she didn't bring it up even when Katsuki returned, never asked pointed questions or dropped hints, just chattered about ideas for his room with him as if the conversation had never happened. Masaru was weirdly proud of her.

When Katsuki returned to the school to continue packing, glaring at the classmates who were proudly finished or near to it, it was with instructions to finish clearing out his old room and not to worry about the new one. He was a little apprehensive about what his parents suddenly had in store, but he nodded all the same, keeping his fingers crossed that his tentative trust wasn't misplaced.

And sure enough, they delivered. The afternoon rolled around with his old room finally empty, and he met his parents outside the new building with bags of clothes and books slung over his shoulders, shoving away all the onlookers who had immediately pounced on his family before he even got there – he should have known his shitty friends would try to take advantage of the situation, would try to coax secrets out of his old man and flirt them out of the old hag.

"Back off," he demanded, as he separated the group easily. "They're here to work, not to gossip with you assholes."

He climbed up the stairs to his new room, his parents at his heels assuring him that things could be moved and changed, and that they'd just gotten a little carried away before he'd arrived. Bracing himself for the worst, he opened his door, and for a moment he had no words.

"I know you said the grey and white was boring," Masaru began, "but we thought maybe it would be a little classier if we worked with it rather than fight it? So when we found this nice bed cover we kind of worked around that."

The blanket in question was made up of stripes of varying widths, mostly black and grey, but with a single thick red one near the bottom of the mattress. Pillows were loaded up against the headboard, cased in the same shades to match, and while he knew most people would complain about having six different pillows on the bed, he and his parents knew better. There were pillows for leaning against, pillows for sleeping on, and while he'd never say it out loud, there were pillows for holding onto, too.

"Big enough for two," Mitsuki said softly, when Katsuki didn't speak. "You know, just in case."

He still didn't say a word, but he didn't object, either, and Mitsuki managed to refrain from pushing it. Masaru smiled warmly at her for it, wrapping an arm around her waist, and Katsuki finally took a step into his new room.

His desk and drawers were both a simple shade of grey, less boring than stark white but less teen-angst than black. Above his desk was the discussed noticeboard, wrapped in dark fabric, with only one item pinned to it so far – their most recent family photo from their New Year's Eve get-together, where Katsuki only wore a hint of a scowl rather than his usual glare. He knew they were probably half-expecting him to walk in and tear it down right away, but he averted his eyes instead, as if he hadn't even noticed it.

"I saw this little shoe cupboard and storage bench on my lunchbreak last week and thought they looked nice, so we went back this morning to take another look and ended up buying them. If they're not your style that's totally okay too!"

"They're fine," he answered, lifting up the lid of the bench to check out the space within. "I'll keep my training gear and stuff in here."

"Yeah! It's deep enough for your gauntlets, too, if you need to find room for them in here. I measured to be sure."

He nodded, unable to quite force the word "thanks" out of his mouth, but he had a feeling his parents knew all the same.

"We didn't end up getting a rug, we thought with the bed in the middle it wouldn't really fit? Everything is fairly symmetrical right now and we didn't want to mess with that. Maybe we could find two narrower ones to go beside the bed, but nothing grabbed our eye."

"No, I like it," Katsuki shrugged, turning to look at a painting above his bookshelf. "Where did you find this?"

"I actually had this one in the works before we talked yesterday," Masaru smiled faintly. "Someone at work introduced me to an amazing painter, and I thought it would look nice even in your old room."

The canvas was dark around the edges, slashed with red and orange coming out from the center, and between the shades and the texture it could practically have come straight from his palm.

"It's cool," he said finally, when he realised he hadn't spoken. "Tell them I like it."

"I will!"

He opened the closet door, unsurprised to find a pile of new clothes hanging inside, and turned to give his mother a stern look.

"They were leftover from a shoot and they were all your size!" she explained quickly. "I couldn't let them go to waste!"

He flipped through a few hangers, expecting white shirts and blue blazers like she usually pushed on him, but instead he found darker shades. Slim cut jeans and tailored shirts that he'd rarely indulge her in, but colours he might actually wear, all the same.

"We'll take off and let you get settled in," Masaru smiled, when Katsuki had finished exploring. "Unless you need a hand unpacking your clothes and things?"

"No, I'm good," he answered quickly, gesturing toward the three bags he'd brought over from the old building. "This is it for now."

"Alright, well then have a great night! Call if you need anything, otherwise we'll see you again next weekend."

"Yeah, see you then," he agreed, hesitating. "Um, th-thank you. For all this stuff, I mean. I, um, I like it."

When Mitsuki flung her arms around him, he didn't shove her away. He grumbled, sure, and only conceded an awkward pat on her back in return, but still he allowed the arms to hug him briefly.

"We'll miss you, brat," she informed him, ruffling his spikes and grinning at his scowl. "Phone us once in a while, you hear me?"

"Yeah, whatever," he grumbled, shoving his hands in his pockets. "Talk to you later."

As they showed themselves out, leaving Katsuki to unpack, they met a familiar face in the hallway. He beamed down at Mitsuki, a good three inches taller than the last time she'd seen him, and she gasped when he stepped in to hug her tightly.

"It's been so long!" he gushed, giving her one last squeeze before they parted again. "Did you come to see Kacchan's new room?"

"We've been helping set it up," she grinned, leaning in a little closer to whisper conspiratorally. "He suddenly took an interest in having a classy bedroom, we couldn't let the opportunity pass us by!"

"Oh! I can't wait to see it!" Izuku grinned, his eyes squinting a little with how wide it stretched. "Are you heading home? Shall I walk you to the station?"

"No, no, that's quite alright," Masaru assured him. "I'm sure you're busy, goodness knows Katsuki is. Keep an eye on him for us, would you? Let us know if you think he might need us, he never reaches out for himself."

"I will!" Izuku agreed. "Have a safe trip home!"

As they headed for the stairs, Izuku continued down the hall, and they exchanged a look of surprise when he stopped at Katsuki's door.

"Kacchan!" they heard, always so excited to see him, even when it had only been a matter of hours. "Wow, look at all this! It's amazing! Is that a new bed, too?"

"Yeah," Katsuki mumbled. "It's, um, big enough for two."
