March Madness Trends So Far

Trend 1) Between 16 games on Thursday and 16 Games on Friday, a total of 32 games all together, there has only been 5 outright upsets on Thursday and 3 outright upsets on Friday, for a total of 8 upsets out of 32 games played. That is a 25% win ratio for dogs, which isn't the best of odds overall if you think about it.

Does betting underdogs give you the better payout? of course it does!! If you are lucky enough to pick the one dog and only bet that one dog that wins then you are in heaven. However, if you are betting a bunch of dogs trying to find that one dog that does hit, you are probably going to have a bad time. Just understand, most of the time, upwards to 75% of the time, the favorite will win.

Trend 2) The teams that are placed as the home team on ESPN (the team thats on the bottom vs the team that is on the top) win outright more than not. For example, between the 16 games on Thursday and 16 games on Friday, a total of 32 games all together, the team listed on the bottom won outright 25 times out of 32. That's a 78% win ratio for bottom teams.

Thursday they went 12-4

Friday they went 13-3

If you look at the first 2 games on Saturday that have been played already (San Diego State and Tennessee), both bottom teams have won so far and one of them was an underdog.

Keep this in mind for Sunday games and possibly sweet 16 games and so on. If the team is listed on the bottom as a home team on paper as well as being the underdog, it might be worth pulling the trigger. But know, most often then not, the bottom team and the favorites win at a high 75% and better so far. Can this change as less and less teams are available heading into the final four, yes! This is just something I am noticing for now and might be worth a consideration.

Comments

For all sports, home teams tend to win more than not on a given day, especially in NBA. There will be times NBA road teams will win out more for a stretch of a few days but more often then not, NBA home teams will win more. I think it was last year, or the year before that, for 30 days straight, home teams won outright for the day. As far as the underdog vs favs go, I am not sure, I mean, favs win more but to what degree I don't know.

Does this factor in the NBA or for ALL sports in that matter?

True

Definitely worth noting. Thank you for the education.
