Oh no, never apologize for your opinions! It's good that we think different things 🙂 By trope, I just meant that it's very common nowadays to have a "spunky" and sassy teenage girl who is smarter and better than everyone else, who ends up being the hero and the key to everything. I may very well be oversensitive to it because of other movies I've seen. She at least had a kind heart, and is probably more well-written than I gave her credit for at first viewing.

2023-06-12 22:23:24 +0000 UTCI have almost no experience of kids, so perhaps I fell victim to a trope without realising it. I usually actively root for kids to die violently in movies (in real life I just try to avoid them.) In this movie I was surprised at how much I did not hate Holly, and that's why I mentioned her. If I did not recognise a common trope, I apologise.

2023-06-12 22:06:37 +0000 UTCNo, I know exactly what you mean. There's definitely a lot of that balance of deadpan, sharp wit, and goofy slapstick that you see more in non-American comedy. I really appreciated it myself. I found it hard to vibe with Holly. Maybe it's just because that particular trope is so prevalent now that it's a cliche, or perhaps having a tween daughter myself I have a low tolerance 🤣

2023-06-12 21:14:58 +0000 UTCI love the humour in this! Please don't take this the wrong way but it doesn't seem typically American. The deadpan sarcasm seems more typical of the type of humour I grew up with in New Zealand. The writing also made young Holly seem like a very real and lovable person while not detracting from the humour.
