I think partially this is due to the reputation of early Ah-nold. This movie was basically the first time he had a director that encouraged him to try to act. The character Conan is based on the pulp stories of Robert E Howard. The score by Basil Poledouris is a highlight of his career. When you see this movie without expectations, you are impressed!
