The Girl With All the Gifts full commentary

Whooo Nelly was this an intense movie!  I had no idea what it was and I'm so GLAD because I think it really added to the whole atmosphere.  The whole first part was just trying to understand what was happening, and then it was all about looking at this kind of situation from the other side of the fence.  Top notch film, thanks to DroidC for the request, LOVED IT!

Thanks again for requesting it! It was an amazing experience. I definitely understand the humans' side, but the way they framed the story so we'd sympathize with Melanie was so clever and it did work on me, which made the ending that much more ominous. We all look out for our own in the end, I suppose, but I can't imagine what kind of world those kids will make 😨 Basically it just seems like no one actually gets in trouble for doing it like this so I just decided to take the chance and hope that if the poop hits the fan it's just a cease-and-desist letter 🤣

I feel like there are quite a few ways to interpret the film. The themes can be inferred in many ways. One I’ve seen come up often is that it’s a cautionary tale. That wolves in sheep’s clothing are still wolves. The girl was shown to be consistently monstrous throughout, not to say her captors were blameless- but as a biased party, (I’m human lol) I can sympathize with the soldiers. Their situation was horrible. Their families likely dead, cooped up in the airbase with their near certain fate ever present at the front of their minds. She was looking out for herself and hers, which I totally get, but at the same time I feel if you can apply that logic to her, then likewise that logic would apply to the humans, and in that case her death for the vaccine would be worthwhile. The film wore a very brutal, if not defeatist tone throughout. It’s not an outright horror film, but near enough. The ending stuck with me. The shot of the woman waking up to her tapping. The look of horrible resignation on her face, the knowledge that for the rest of her days she’d never be able to leave, that she’d grow old with monsters who’d happily eat her alive as she screamed- that would be her only company for however long she managed before she opened up that door and embraced the inevitable. The girls nonchalance as she replies that there is nothing but time. That scene alone made it worth recommending this film IMO. As an aside, the video & audio being present made this a far better experience as a viewer. I’m glad you were able to find a workaround. Thanks for your reaction and commentary!

Such a great experience, I love not knowing what I'm getting into!

That is very cool about your training and zombie apocalypse prep! I'm quite sure I wouldn't last long 😅 Thanks for the info about Parks' military experience, I didn't know what a Terry was but I am familiar with the US National Guard. It adds a lot to his character knowing he wasn't like hardcore career military at the start. Poor guy, I had grown to like him by the end.

I knew nothing about this movie either until watching your reaction but once I realized it was a zombie movie I was all in!

Yeah, this was a combination of intense horror and brooding dread. I agree, Brits do zombies very well! Sergeant Parks said he had been a Terry which if you didn't know is a member of the Territorial Army, similar to the US National Guard. Part time soldiers that typically do about a third of regular soldiers basic training combined with monthly weekend drills and a couple of weeks annual training camp. I have been a fan of zombie movies ever since I first saw the Tom Savini remake of Night of the Living Dead around 1990. I was even a member of Zombie Survival internet forums from about 2005. I had my everyday carry bag, complete with lifeboat rations, water purification tablets, solar charger, kevlar sleeves, spectra gloves and police arm guards. I had a plan to get out of the city by almost deserted routes and head for the coast. I had a medieval mace. (I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have survived long in the Zombie Apocalypse.) I also got into the hobby of Airsoft through zombie internet forums. Several British based guys told me about a Resident Evil themed game at Clay Wheels industrial site in Sheffield. I was hooked. For the next 5 years the club I joined did mostly 24 hour Military Simulation games at Army FIBUA (what the Yanks call MOUT) training villages like Senneybridge in Wales, Catterick in North Yorkshire and Copehill Down in Wiltshire. My club was about a third former military and liked us to take things seriously. We also played at industrial sites waiting to be demolished. We played at an old cotton mill, a former asylum, several old factories and once at an old shopping mall in Reading for a Dawn of the Dead themed zombie game. We did training days where we practised camoflauge, land navigation and indoor pistol marksmanship. A .2 gram airsoft pellet was far from an accurate projectile but fired from a gas blow back pistol was accurate enough for close range indoor training) I loved the cast in this movie! Dominique Tipper (Private Dasani) I think had already filmed the first season of The Expanse and I have loved Paddy Considine ever since I saw him in Dead Man's Shoes.
