For a frozen still scene of either a landing or take-off, I would prefer the first image of two reasons: it has a more interesting front quarter view of the aircraft and it's easier in it to get the sense of movement. In the head on view of the second still image, the aircraft looks smaller and it's much more difficult to sense its movement. Plus, if the first image was two full pages wide, it has the added effect of telling reader that an overshadowingly massive flying boat from a distant land came to the remote river valey and the locals are like: "Who ARE these people coming to disturbe our peaceful waters?!".
