Freeze Greaze

Greetings adventurers!

A longstanding brand in the magical accoutrements industry, Titan Killer is one of my go to’s whenever I need to find a consumable ready for use in the dungeon. I’m required to tell you the previous sentences were a sponsored segment. We are in no way affiliated with Titan Killer other than they give us money to say favorable things about them, though we totally would anyways. You can find more details on the back of the tin. Not for use with Titan Killer’s Fire Beans or Titan Killer Mule Kick. Use as directed. If the cooling sensation lasts for longer than 4 hours, see an alchemist.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

If that strikes your fancy, consider becoming a Patron

Design notes from Matthew:

I want to do more consumables. This is something I’ve stated before, but I really like the design balance of making something of limited use. You get to cram some interesting things in when you know that it’s only going to be used a couple of times before it’s time to be discarded. The original concept here was just ice focused with no healing whatsoever, but once Fernando started showing me some examples with “Icy Cold” on it, I couldn’t get “Icy Hot” out of my head and saw an opportunity for a design change.

On the PF2E side, I went with tried and true methods for scaling damage. There are a lot of oils out there at apply a rune for a minute and that seemed to be the most natural way to pursue balancing the damage piece here. Frost runes are exactly what I was looking for, but that did mean I had to crank up the item level a bit to bring it in line. For the healing option, well you only need to look at healing potions to get a good idea of where to scale it at. I decided to opt for the lower end of healing here to avoid pushing the item level higher and keep in line with the multiple uses.

For the 5E side, well I know that I wanted to keep this lower rarity at something like an uncommon rarity as I wanted it to be an early game item for 5E. It was pretty straightforward to bring that in line by just converting damage to cold. This can be relevant for reasons of avoiding elemental resistance or it can be an early way to bypass non-magical damage resistance. Additionally, the longer duration and crit ability allow it to punch a little higher. Tack on some healing like from a potion and we’ve got an interesting item.

This month is a bit busy for me as I’ll be flitting back and forth on a vacation as well as Paizocon the next week after. That said, we should be lined up for our usual releases. It’s hard to think we’d ever miss one anymore. I like to keep that streak alive. We’ve managed to have a release every week for well over 100 weeks now and I’m really proud of that!

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.

- Fernando & Matthew
