Watch episode 18 of Map Men NOW!

SURPRISE!!! Episode 18 of Map Men is already here!

Normally we do one episode per month, but... medium sized story short... just for April, we're doing TWO episodes per month. Normal monthly service resumes next month.

This episode is all about a country in North America called the USA. We've got rather a lot of viewers from that country, so I hope we pronounced all the words right!

No one else apart from you brilliant Patrons gets to see this until Monday, so before then is a perfect time to get your comments in and ask any questions you may have.

You're all absolutely brilliant!! Thanks very much and see you all soon, either in the comments section of this video, or the comments section below this post, or possibly on the Piccadilly line.

Bye!!!!

Jay

Jay, I believe you are one of the most underrated comedians on Youtube. The amount of work you put into each video, the stealthy and elaborate humor, the topics... (and of course I'm mostly talking about your individual work here, regardless of my loving MapMen as well). Also, you are the ONLY content creator who makes me anticipate each sponsorship block at the end of the videos. Those bits are simply brilliant as well. The reason for my writing this is I am shifting my financial priorities, and I am suspending all my patreon memberships, including yours, but this doesn't mean I value your work less. :)

Did you just upload this again?

Any chance of perhaps slowing the scroll of alternative names down a wee teency bit? It is top shelf humour and I'd like to think all viewers would pause to read it like us cartographical crazies but i don't know if all will

I was just thinking about the root of the continents’ name yesterday at work, how timely’

Big fan of all those alternate names. If I had to pick one I'd say Chad 3, leave Chad 2 open to anyone else that wants it.

I'd hardly say it's so uncommon as to draw attention, but it's not the only way the country is referred to. However, I think what the video may miss, that links to the referenced South American resentment, is the use of the demonym/adjective *American*. Which is most definitely the way one refers to things from/of/in the U.S.A. in English; although it an also be used to refer to things from the Americas, depending on context. And that is one nice thing about the video, it touches on that the Americans aren't the only ones to refer to it in this way.

I increased my monthly pledge because of this! The production value, the costumes, and the lavish display of honey are worth every cent!

The state of Washington could have been named Columbia (named after the river, which is named after a ship), but because some thought it will be confused with DC, they went with Washington instead (so that people would confuse the other part of the name of the capital, I guess). British Columbia was named after the Columbia district (not the DC one, the Oregon Country one), which was named after that same river named after a ship. So I guess there are layers to some names

This may also have benefited from an exploration of European's obsession with designating it as a single continent "America" versus two continents "The Americas". It's a controversial can of worms for some, but relevant; and those declaring it to be a single continent are clearly wrong, Eurasia's more clearly one continent than North and South America :-P

It comes from the fact that Christopher Columbus thought he landed in India when he arrived in what's now Cuba, the DR, etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Indies#Origin_and_use_of_the_term

I find it Ironic, as an American, I do call myself an American, but I almost never call this country “America” nor does anyone I know. Everyone here that I know says “Here in the U.S.” almost never with the A, or just say “in the United States”. It’s actually very rare for me tear hear someone say “here in America” to the point it seems weird. Calling it “America” actually feels foreign.

Hey Jay, I have to say that while the episode is good, stating that there is a debate on Menzies' 1421 claims is akin to claiming there is debate on climate change. No reputable historian lends credence to the 1421 tale. It would be best if you removed the mention of it outright to avoid lending undue weight to pseudohistory. If you have to audio replace, you can probably replace it with mention of the Polynesian contacts with South America instead.

That makes sense, thanks for the info :)

Hello! I've had a lot of people pledging, getting their name in the credits, then cancelling payment. So to stop this from happening so much, Jade (my partner who does my credits graphics) is filtering names so that you only get in the credits of each new video if you made a payment on the previous charge date. So as you signed up in April, you can expect to be in the credits for May's episode :)

The List was the funniest thing. I was bawling

Land of the Rising Gun was pretty good. Plus, it’s still five words so when people shorten down to just the last word, the country will just be called “Gun”.

I also heard it

Does the lower harmony in the opening sound... off? Is it specifically meant to mess with my ears?

Err....is that a bit of Zoom 2 at 2:25? If so...NICHE!

And to that dude who wrote and deleted: i appericate jays work, but im paying 10$/month for something (which i get in fine quantities).

And i just realised, im not in the credits ._.

Does the word Indies have anything to do with India? Seeing as East Indies is East of India, and that India and Indies sound vaguely similar?

Aamod Pant

Well.... You didnt joke when you said 2 episodes this month on twitter The 1st of April
