The Problem With American Education

hack the system

awesome ! the folks on wall street hacked the system to put tons of money in their pockets. How do we "hack the system" to achieve a true democratic state.

Great video. I’m dyslexic, and for grades 6-8 I went to a private school catered to people with learning disabilities, after years of failing in a more traditional environment. I can say with a lot of confidence I wouldn’t be where I’m at today without that opportunity. Learning how to learn is a skill critically lacking in our education system.

I heard lots of great arguments here, but missed somehow pure nature - for people before 25, education is a race. "There is not enough places that will let me work for the salary that I think I should get". The salary baseline is ability to buy this shiny new overpriced iPhone and drive Tesla. And it gets worse if young people are exposed to all the.. how to say it.. evidence of system inequality, they are teached to see as individual failures. I keep saying here that it is student perspecitve, but it may as well be his/her parents belief. It does not matter since parents influence their children. So no matter "who". It matters how wide-spread this unhealthy idea is. I would love to hear if this is just my opinion or does it fit in this subject? If it is true, then maybe next video could attack the low-level beliefs (and greed) that keep the race on.

If we taught our citizens how to run an amortization table and calculate interest the entire system would collapse as people started to realize how rigged it is.

The reason we’re at the middle and not the bottom may be because our colleges and universities were factored in. I bet if we exclusively compared K-12 education with other western cultures we’d be near the bottom. We need professional educators like those we hire at university levels BECAUSE it would attract more ambitious, creative and intelligent instructors. Graduates who would be willing to stay and become effective teachers, instead of leaving after 3 years to help alleviate some of their student loans payments. In fact, make education K-university tuition free for all and we would have graduates who actually WANT to teach at the K-12 levels...because they wouldn’t have to forego a true desire to teach instead of taking better paying jobs they hate. Many who teach now are teaching with an emergency credential and have had NO training because during the training period YOU GET NO SALARY and the work is full time for approximately one school year. And those who do, generally live with their parents and may take part time jobs to fill-in the financial gaps...but few have that advantage. Hence the student loan crimes of the century...forcing young people into debt. So, what graduate is going to be able to do student teaching without a salary?...just for shelter, food and transportation? YET, doctors and lawyers (male dominated) get paid while they intern. The capitalistic system sets up struggles and the entire nation looses. Some so angry they ignorantly storm the capital. It’s a crying shame what people allow capitalism to do to THEM...out of some made-up fear of living in a grey and desolate gulag or some such nonsense, instead of embracing a Democratic-Socialist system, which benefits all even those who want to run successful businesses.

I went to a Vocational Education center for the last 2 years of high school and I took all that I learned and eventually became a Municipal Building Inspector and, a number of years after that, I am now an Electrician (my true passion) .What I learned with the time spent there was who I was and what I liked. I did Horribly with structured scholastic lessons, I do NOT learn that way but they only taught 1 way back then in High school. The Vocational school actually had kids framing walls and allowed kids that learn by DOING to excel where they would otherwise ordinarily fail. You are beginning to see the effects of these types of schools closing - Have you tried to find a GOOD contractor lately ? When you allow your Wee Butterflies to explore who they are but only at College it becomes your own fault when your child fails in that structured environment and the only guy you can find to fix your toilet is a complete goober because you would NEVER allow your precious to do such work (work that he or she may quite enjoy)

Great content per usual. I especially liked the lead into your plug for Curiosity stream. Well done.

An important part of specialists' training has to be communication skills. Not just to be able to talk to the public effectively, but also to the bean counters that usually dole out research grants. And I completely reject the notion that " Many people are just never going to have the critical thinking skills to lead them in the correct general direction" that's a bit elitist. Critical thinking can be taught as any other subject.

While I agree with the video I see a much bigger problem. The increase in scientific knowledge has created many specialists that understand their domain better than the rest of the world will ever have a chance to understand. This creates problems when it concerns national policy issues such as climate change, covid-19, computer hacking, etc. When people don't trust the experts it creates a lot of anxiety, opens up the discussion to ignoramuses, and causes people to do crazy things. No amount of education is going to fix that. Many people are just never going to have the critical thinking skills to lead them in the correct general direction.

heck yeah lets gooooo
