Should We Divest From The Military?

Howdy, friends! This week's episode is all about the US military budget. We spend more money on the military than the next ten nations combined, but we face so many problems here at home. With Biden's new budget proposal exceeding even Trump's, I think we need to ask ourselves what exactly our bloated military accomplishes, and whether that money might be better spent elsewhere. I hope you enjoy!

Should We Divest From The Military?

Think about all the money we spend on defense and places around the world we occupy. Yet our capital was overtaken and electoral counting process stopped by our own conspiracy theorist whipped up by the formerpresident.

This visualization shows some sources, including studies suggesting that one time payments of $10,000 can permanently lift people out of poverty over half the time because they can use the resources to access more resources. https://mkorostoff.github.io/1-pixel-wealth/

Christ, yes, cut military spending.

Hello. Thanks for the content. I 100% agree we can cut and should repurpose Department of Defense spend. However, I do not understand the $20 billion to end homelessness estimate. If you have 500,000 and only $20bill to end homelessness, wouldn't that be less than $50,000 per person on a one time basis? I live in Denver ,which relative to the size of other major cities, appears to be highly concentrated with homeless individuals. Cost of living is also relatively high...$50k does not get you much for even one year when you add food + home + complete lack of feasible mass transportation. On top of that, any criminal record vastly restricts your opportunities to get a job with an above poverty-level wage. I think an episode on ending homelessness would be an excellent topic (if not already covered).

It should be free like every other peer nation. We absolutely can afford it and if we stopped funding endless war and Wall Street all the time even more so.

U talk often about how expensive college is but never offer a solution. Can u offer a couple of ways for college to become more affordable? Would getting rid of student loan debt make it more affordable? Have you looked at what other countries do better than we do?

Well, since the last time US citizens fought on their own soils (while not fighting each other) was in 1812 (no, Hawaii in 1941 were not American soil), I think that answer lends itself quite obviously. Even the appetites of powerful military industrial complex could be satisfied: there are so many actually useful high tech gear they could build, from high speed trains to orbital factories.

Imagine if we took our skilled military people and put them to work designing, building and maintaining low-cost housing. Providing medical care. Teaching. Imagine directing our human and humane assets for benefit! Crazy huh.

I use to be in the military. They spend son much because they can. No one really has a budget in the departments. I don’t understand why we spend so much for our military despite us having so many other needs. It’s like have the most expensive cable package but not having food to eat most nights.
