The Water Wars Are Coming

Howdy, friends! This week we're talking about water. The world faces a looming water crisis, and it's getting worse every year. With a number of large cities facing Day Zero, and just a handful of heavily contested water sources providing freshwater for millions of people, the possibility of water wars is very real.

What is zeroscaping? Also, I now eat Beyond Meat burger patties. I love meat, and was never big on veggies, but I was able to give up eating red meat, eat more veggies, and eat some of the Beyond Meat items to satisfy my meat cravings.

When we run out of water to drink, we can at least eat the rich.

I'd like to see a future episode about what money is, how the myth of barter is bunk, and whether we even need money.

And in any case, it's a matter of changing how decisions about production are made, more than changing individual people's buying habits. With both the water and the beef questions. Conserving water by taking shorter showers won't solve this problem, nor will ordering vegan salads. Changing how and how much beef is farmed and how water rights are parceled out (especially to corporations like Nestle and Coca-Cola) will.

In western Colorado where i live we are in extreme drought, water restrictions are in place, prices are up and irrigation allotments are curtailed. The supply of water is not from the Colorado River but the mesas and plateaus surrounding this desert. It is worse without the carry over from the previous year but it will be normal. And they build more car washes. 🙄

An overlooked aspect of China's takeover of Tibet was that it now controls the major water supply of rivers to India and Bangladesh. Do you see a problem there? 🤔

I’m up in Washington State. We have quite a bit of fresh water but it’s solely dependent upon snow and glacier melt, and rain. We also rely heavily on hydroelectricity where I live. Each year has been getting warmer and hotter, and the mountains that used to be snow capped year around when I was a child are almost completely bare by the time Summer begins. It’s honestly terrifying.

My approach to lowering water consumption is zeroscape the front yard. I save tons of water and do less yard work. Then eat a moderate amount of burgers (throwing away none). If everyone did that, I think it would go a long way.

I live in Utah, the Colorado River bit hit a bit close to home... Especially seeing as those lakes he was talking about are popular vacation spots for us locals... Starting to think that I'm going to need to keep a generous supply of water in the basement.

It always blows my mind just how few people think about this.

I haven't quite wrapped my head around the 15,000+ liters of water per KG of beef estimate. I wish people who referenced this estimate broke it down into a more comprehensive explanation instead of just using it as undisputed truth. Whereas the call for moderation in meat and water consumption is well overdue for a variety of reasons, I'm not sure that referencing water cost per kg of beef is the way to get there. IMO the estimate is confusing and raises skepticism.
