Why Terrorism Is Such A Dangerous Word

Howdy, comrades! If you've been keeping up with online news, you may have seen coverage of a Navy anti-terrorism training document that equated socialists and anarchists with neo-nazis. It should be obvious that this is an absurd comparison. In this episode, we're talking about the vague, unhelpful application of the word "terrorism" and what it means for the political left, and the United States as a whole. Hope you enjoy!

Why Terrorism Is Such A Dangerous Word

Comments

Is it terrorism if a group of people burn down city structures, riot, and steal things for an entire summer?

The thing that terrifies me is the wave of new anti-protest laws that are passing as "critical infrastructure protection." Private tyrannies (corporations) also own and control all means of electronic communication. What good is organization if they can literally flick a switch and shut down Twitter whenever it suits them. Internet communication needs to be made a public utility. And leftists should be building their own open source platforms for organization.

SUPERB productions!!!!

I wish you could honestly tell us it's all unicorns and rainbows yet the facts say otherwise. As an anarchist I am concerned for us and any other Leftist. What could we do if they come after us ala mass imprisonment spurning new private prison industry. It may be a dystopian concern unfounded yet the US has a way of making concentration camps for those it fears.

Great work! I remember investigating this when began reading Pablo Neruda, and then that spread to other authors. And then on then films on the "disappeared," many of them journalists and activists. Really, we were behind this. So, any illusion of the U.S. holding up democratic ideals is just not consistent with the horrible history of propping up right wing authoritarians.

Amazing work as always!!

This is a true artistic and educational masterpiece in my opinion, detailing how the US derailed Allende’s successful Socialist/Cybernetics based government: https://youtu.be/RJLA2_Ho7X0 If this link doesn’t work, the channel is a fantastic philosophy channel, Plastic Pills, and the title of the video is Cybersocialism: Project Cybersyn & the CIA Coup in Chile

We're all definitely on a watch list now.

The distinction between left wing and right wing terrorism is so important to make right now, and reminding us of all the times the government has supported this right wing shift towards fascism helps hit home exactly what we’re facing. Thank you so much for all your hard work!

Mister Anderson

Yeah, when I hear "Terrorist" I think My Pillow guy.

Calling things terrorism often tends to be examples of errorism. :)

"Terrorism" is a method, not ideology - it entails, well, terrorizing non-combantants in order to achieve a (usually) political goal. Whether perpetrators are far right (e.g. most of domestic terrorists in the US), far left (e.g. Brigatte Rosse - provided those were not "false flag" operations), religiously motivated (ISIL in Paris or abortion clinic bombers), "freedom fighters" (IRA, various fringe Palestinian groups) or state-sponsored or directly perpetrated by governments (e.g. Israel has long tradition of these, and the US (probably also Russia and China) is not far behind), lethal violence against civilians is equally criminal.

Word. Terrorism is relative.
