The Myth Of Upward Mobility

Howdy, friends! This week we're revisiting the idea of "meritocracy" and exploring the misguided belief that the United States is anywhere close to a "fair competition" where everyone has "equal opportunity." Let me know what you think of the visuals in this one, I think they're pretty engaging. Same for the thumbnail! Do you like a less serious presentation? I want to make sure my content isn't *too* depressing. Hope you all enjoy the episode!

I would also add to this topic that even the idea that meritocracy can ever officially exist in an objective way is flawed. Not just because of what JT said about it becoming unequal (even in the perfect case) after one generation in terms of who can win the existing meritocratic status. But even the terms change at that point. Because who defines meritocracy is ALWAYS whoever wins the initial competition, and no one else gets to decide after that. We've seen this as neoliberalism has grown over time. The rules for what is meritocratic has effectively evolved alongside whatever benefits the rich. So it pretty much almost immediately evolves to be that the existing top just change the rules as soon as it starts not working for them anymore. We saw this with the so called "free market" with the stock market thing that happened with GameStop. Just as soon as the poor figured out a way to "win the game", the rules of meritocracy changed to prevent them from moving forward after that. And again, it's because as soon as someone is above others, they get to dictate meritocracy in material terms. Just a thought experiment (or in this real world case) you can figure out that there is no real democratic form of meritocracy that can ever manifest and work or sustain.

Also, I am not a fan of the thumbnail personally. I definitely prefer the more professional looking ones from your previous videos. I am fine with the thumbnail having a lighter feel, moreso I have a problem with how unfinished it looks.

"They are slightly different leftists and I hate them" This seems like an inside joke that only leftists would get. Also, it really jumped out and didn't feel like it meshed with the rest of the clip. I don't know if others felt the same way.. but the rest of the video is great.

I’ve seen every second thought video. My favorite one is the one that disproved that capitalism is the best system for creating new technologies - this one touches on a very similar point.. it disproves that capitalism creates the most productive people. Banger of a video

Nice! It's good when you put in humor so when i share this with folks i am trying to reach it goes down a little easier. I find a lot of people complaing about the system but still grasp onto capitalism, just can't give it up πŸ€”

hey JT I've been having thoughts about creating content for myself, do you have any advice for beginners?

Agree.

The only thing I disliked about this was having to see Ted Cruz’s fugly mug.
