How Capitalism Destroys Radical Movements

Howdy, comrades! Movements like Black Lives Matter often start out as radical demands for change and progress, but somewhere along the line they get co-opted, defanged, and become little more than meaningless symbols. How does this happen? Why is it so hard for radical movements to succeed in the imperial core? Hope you enjoy!

How Capitalism Destroys Radical Movements

I call them the "pretend like we're doing something about it" campaigns. About 4 years ago in Los Angeles, there was a "march for justice" movement. They got a bunch of money, printed justice on thousands of shirts and picket signs, and marched all around town, creating traffic jams, and stressing people out trying to get to and from work. And did it bring justice? Probably made it worse somehow.

Is there any way to know if anyone is going to organize a movement or protest? I mean.. I have little to no network on social media, but I would gladly participate (did it once when prompted by friends). I think many people would come out and participate, but is not aware of any events.

Hi, I think this is your best video yet. Thank you for being awesome.

It could be said this way also: Just wait until you hv high numbers of Americans on the street, from evictions, with no food for their families, during Winter.

I used different words to express the ideas of recuperation and capitalist realism so thanks for making me feel like i have taken some pol sci classes. Also i don't feel so alone. And yea i will carry this out to the world and preach it because the religion of capitalism needs competition 😁 thanks for helping 🙏

I like how you claimed that Mark Fisher was the "last nerd", entirely ignoring yourself.

The commodification of the 60s turned it into the 70s and here we are. Do not get nostalgic for those times! Those times led to these times.

I would add to the bunch of theorists Alain Badiou which both in "Being and Event" and "Logic of Worlds" discusses how the forces react to the Event (i.e. George Floyd death) identifying the revolutionary, reactionary and (that which he deems the deadliest of them) the reformist ("recuperationist") subjectivation (interpretative and political practice) of the Truth (i.e. systemic racism) revealed by the Event.

Very illuminative! Capitalist realism and recuperation are not things I associated with what is happening today, good to learn something new!

This is excellent. Synthesized everything I’ve been reading over the last 2 years. I don’t know how you do it! It’s definitely a special skill you have to the extreme, and I’m so grateful for your work! Please keep it up!

I understand the assignment. Thank you❤

You should be full of yourself, guy. You make great content. Thank you for sharing. Much appreciated!

Some of your best work, thanks for introducing some theory!

I disagree that capitalism is screwing us over. What about the times in 60s and 70s. Did we not have capitalism then and yet you could provide for your family with one job.

I personally believe that making it easy to passively consume the information you’re putting out is a good thing. It’s helped me realized how messed up we live and it has inspired me to inform others and encourage others to step up
