Honestly I think a lot of Ash's stubbornness and lack of preparation in what we've seen so far comes down to the fact he's meant to be a bit of a representation of the average kid who plays their first Pokemon game, they don't really think of swapping Pokemon out, or deep strategies. Part of that also does come down to the fact the first 2 Game Generations are pretty simple lol, each generation has become more mechanically complex though, and I would say the characters in the anime's use of strategy will reflect that more as we go.
