So we finally finished Johto, I'm still shocked we're this far in, honestly I enjoyed Johto, it slowly improved as we went through it, it's a bit of an excuse I know, but I feel like they were slowly finding their footing with what they want the anime to be especially when they realised the series would go on for along time. The thing you have to understand about some of early Pokemon is they genuinely had no idea how long it was going to last or how big it would get, they thought the second Game Generation would be the last, which is kind of hilarious now when Gen 10 and the 30th anniversary is next year. By the way, to add to what Denickart said, there are a series of side specials following other characters stories, Misty, Brock, Oak, Jessie and James backstory (yes that was done in a side special lol), we get to see Brock's family again and his mum returns... which is awkward because for some reason in the dub when we first met Brock 4kids retconned it so his mum had died, instead of abandoning her family because... 4kids.

Basically that annoying trio from last episode came back and tried to take over Misty's gym while Boner's mom came back from the dead and tried to change his gym type from rock to water.
